Chapter 10.
Her hands tingled as she touched the elevator. Excitement was coursing through her veins as she walked into the 44th floor.
She had woken up very happy after her Father had finally been released from the hospital. She was picking him up later in the evening after all.
His doctor had declared him cancer free and honestly it was the best news Lacey had heard in a while. Her Aunt was also very excited, they couldn't wait to have her father back home.
"Hello Candy."
Donna the receptionist waved at her and Candy grinned.
"Hey Donna. Is Mr Adler here yet?"
She asked and Donna shook his head.
"Not yet. But I guess he'll be here in a few."
"That's a nice blouse."
She said as she gave her a knowing look and Candy laughed nervously.
"Oh thank you. I'll be in my office."
She said as she scurried away.
She had taken Aidas's advice. Partially though. And she was wearing a low white lace camisole underneath her suit jacket and it was showing an ample amount of cleavage. No wonder she had been getting different stares as she walked into Crete Inc.
Back at her desk she went over Hunt Adler's schedule more thoroughly. Looking to see if a name or a place would catch her eye. She needed to at least find a connection between what happened at Ecstasy and him if she were ever to believe Aidas.
She found nothing in the files and sighed.
His office. Maybe that could provide clues. She thought as she stated at it from afar. It was at the opposite side of the room and she would have to pass nosey Donna who would want to know why she was going to his office when he wasn't in.
But it was a risk worth taking she thought as she stood up, held her head up high and started walking towards Hunt Adler's office.
Donna glanced at her while she was halfway across the office.
She gave her a small smile and raised up her phone.
"He needs me to work on a file."
She said and Donna nodded her head in understanding and went back at looking at her computer.
Her knuckles became white as she curled them around the doorknob. She was still tingly and nervous as she opened the glass door, giving room for her to enter his office.
The one thing she loved about his office was the spectacular view.
It was unmatched. Just standing in front of the office, she could see Half of Aron city.
She shook her head quickly. she had other things in mind.
She thought as she walked towards his table. The table was nothing more than a slab of clear glass with the company computer on it.
There were no personal items on his table. None.
She wondered if she could try her luck with the computer as she tried to see if she could guess the password.
She attempted to open the computer twice but her combination didn't work. She paused there.
A third trial would raise suspicions. and she didn't want Hunt to be suspicious of her yet.
But there was a file on his table.
One she didn't recognise or remember filing.
She picked it up eagerly and her eyes widened
It was an autopsy report.
For Lila Hampshire.
Her lookalike.
Curiosity got the best of her as she flipped the file open the same time she heard the door click shut.
Lacey prayed the floor would open up and swallow her as her eyes met the emerald green eyes of Hunt Adler.
His custom made grey suit was hugging his muscular build in all the right places and as he drew nearer with a small smile on his face, Lacey caught a whiff of his masculine scent which was a mixture of sandalwood and mint.
His eyes pierced straight into hers as she trembled slightly, she was still looking for the words to say to him. How was she going to lie that she wasn't snooping around?
She held her breath, unable to tear her gaze away from his.
"Good Morning. I'm sorry I was looking for the Anderson file. I forgot to shelf it last time."
She said as the lie sprang out of her mouth. It was the only thing she could make up and come up with.
"It's fine. I understand."
Hunt said as his eyes travelled down to her cleavage and his jaw seemed to tighten. Lacey noticed and she did a little dance in her head.
She had to at least try, even if she was sure he wasn't going to fall for her games.
She slowly knocked off his pen on the table.
"Oh My God. I'm so sorry."
She said as she bent to pick it up, knowing fully well it would give Hunt enough access to her better view of her cleavage.
She picked the pen up and dropped it back on the table. Feeling a little bit embarrassed at herself for pulling such a stunt. Especially since Hunt was looking at her with a guarded expression.
"It's alright. How are you doing today?"
He asked as he casually walked to his chair while Lacey moved away.
"I'm fine Sir."
She replied and Hunt raised his eyebrow.
"I thought we agreed that we both don't need such formalities?"
He asked and Lacey shrugged. She had forgotten all about it out of her excitement and anxiety.
"Sorry about that. I forgot."
She murmured and he nodded.
"Sure. I understand. Get me a coffee will you? Black. One sugar."
He said dismissively as he turned to his computer and Lacey turned and left the office. Hunt watched her retreating figure with a pain in his groins.
There was something about his personal assistant Candy that kept drawing him to her. He was yet to figure it out yet but he knew that it had more to do with her looking like Lila. He examined his work table and found Lila's autopsy results on his desk. It was the file she had been holding, even though she claimed she wanted the Anderson file.
He wondered if he should be worried. Sure, he knew pure curiosity might have made her pick up the file but he wondered what she was really doing inside his office. He had fired employees for doing less. He hated when his personal space was invaded without his prior notice.
The Anderson file. He couldn't remember, but Candy did mention something about looking for the file, maybe she was right after all.
He sighed as ruffled his blond hair. Browsing through his computer, he spotted an article that caught his attention.
It was about Aidas Vladimir. Hunt frowned as he saw the name. It was too early in the morning for his day to be ruined already by Vladimir, King of the Night Court.
To make matters worse they were both running for the same position.
He went through his computer for a while, browsing through the different files till Candy came back with a cup of coffee balanced in her hand. She had a small smile on her face as she set the coffee down on his table slowly, giving him yet another view of her cleavage. Her small breasts were clad under her lace camisole beneath her jacket and he looked away quickly before she caught him looking.
"Anything else?"
She asked and he shook his head wearily.
"Nothing. Although I was thinking later in the day if we could go for lunch together."
"Sure. I'd love that."
"Alright then. Thank you."
Candy walked out of the office with a smile on her face. For Hunt to ask her out for dinner that definitely meant something. Whatever she was doing was working and it was working well.
She was proud of herself.
She had to find a way to tell Aidas they were having lunch together, just in case he had questions for her to ask him.
And the autopsy report of Lila, she found it strange indeed. She had to ask Aidas what killed her, that seemed to be the only piece of the puzzle that was missing about the case.
If she could get her hands on the autopsy report though. She thought as she picked up her phone and walked towards the bathroom.
"Yes?" Aidas grunted as he picked up his phone. He always sounded grumpy during the day.
"I have news."
Lacey whispered as she opened the door of her bathroom stall slightly to see if she was being listened to.
She wasn't.
"Tell me."
"Well, you know that Lila Hampshire? I was snooping around Hunt's office and I found her autopsy report. He walked in before I could get a proper look at it though."
There was a long pause on the other line. Aidas didn't say a word.
"Hello? Are you there?"
She asked fervently.
"Yes, I am. Go on."
"Go on? That's all I have for now! Now why won't you tell me what the hell is going on? It seems like you know what happened to Lila."
"Who killed her Aidas?"
"I don't know Lacey. I think she had a breathing problem or something."
He lied and Lacey rolled her eyes. That was a lie, she could tell it in his voice. If Lila really had a breathing problem, Hunt wouldn't be so concerned about what killed her.
"I don't believe you. If she really had a breathing problem, he wouldn't be snooping around looking at her autopsy report."
"Okay! Okay! Whatever you say! Just watch out for anything suspicious. And remember what I told you."
He said and she scoffed. She hung up the phone immediately. She had a feeling he was lying. She didn't know why he was lying to her, how was she expected to give him information when all he fed her was half truths and more lies?
She walked back to the office, slowly with her anger building up in her chest. She was halfway across her desk when she heard someone talk.
"Excuse me Miss."
The voice said and Lacey turned back quickly tracing the voice.
The man was tall, with black spiky hair and tired grey eyes. He was wearing a lumberjack shirt and denim jeans with boots. And he was staring at her. No, not staring, gawking at her.
"Hello, can I help you?"
She asked and the man continued staring at her. It was starting to get on her damn nerves honestly.
She clicked her heels on the floor and he blinked.
"Sorry, I'm so sorry about that. Who are you?"
He asked eagerly and Lacey shrugged.
"I'm Candy Holmes. Mr Hunt Adler's personal assistant. Is there anything I can help you with?"
"Yea, I'd like to see Hunt please."
Lacey narrowed her eyes, she didn't remember Hunt having any appointment for the day.
"Do you have an appointment?"
She asked and he shook his head.
"I don't need one. My name is Ruhn Adler. I'm his brother. I really need to see him urgently."
He said in a more serious voice and Candy nodded.
"Oh. Alright. Mr Adler's office is that way."
"Thank you."
Ruhn said as he watched Candy ominously. He had never seen such a resemblance from people who weren't related at all.
It was eery. Candy Holmes was the exact replica of Lila.
