Chapter 28.

"What are you doing here?"

She asked nervously as she slipped out of bed, pulling her nightwear close to her. Aidas said no words as he watched her. He opened the balcony door with brutal ease, as if it wasn't locked.

She forgot he was a Supernatural and superhuman strength was one of the things he was blessed with.

"Aidas... You need to leave."

She said with a shaky voice.

"Do you really want me to leave?"

Aidas asked in a husky voice and Lacey went quiet. He was right, she didn't want him to leave, but she didn't want him either. With Aidas Vladimir came confusion and uncertainty. She had been fine the couple of days without him, or so she thought

"I don't want you here... At least not with after everything that happened."

She murmured and Aidas chuckled.

"I see you're getting pretty close with Hunt Adler..."

"Isn't that what you've always wanted?"

She retorted and Aidas scoffed as he stepped into her bedroom. Lacey knew he wasn't going to hurt her, so she stood fiercely next to her bed. Slightly weary of him drawing closer.

"I think we're both aware that your priorities have changed when it comes to Hunt Adler."

There was a short consuming silence, filled with nothing but the rapid beating of Lacey's heart and Aidas's consuming thoughts.

"I can't spy for you anymore."

Aidas rolled his eyes.

"Of course, how would you when you're already falling in love with him."

"I'm not."

She weakly protested and Aidas raised his eyebrow.

"Even before everything that happened you've always been very biased when it came to him."

"I frankly do not see the appeal."

"He's quite ordinary if you ask me."

Aidas added.

Lacey shrugged. She didn't care if Aidas thought she liked Hunt. No, she didn't. Even if she did, it was far better than being with Aidas. She tried to push away the thoughts of the two of them together in bed as quickly as it reared up in her mind.

No, not today.

She was going to tell Aidas to find another spy and if it meant returning everything he gave to her she would gladly do it. She was grateful that he had helped her out with her father and she was willing to pay him back with every dime he gave her if he insisted.

But above all she wanted her life to be back to normal. No more drama, no more vampires. No more supernaturals who wanted to kill her. She was better off not knowing.

"I'm going to tell Hunt what happened.... How I was spying on him and all. I think he'd understand..."

Aidas glared at Lacey but she continued.

"I'm sorry. I can't spy for you anymore... I can return everything if you want. The apartment, the bills... I just don't want to do this anymore. I want to come clean to Hunt."

"Hunt?!"

Aidas growled in annoyance.

Lacey didn't even flinch.

"And what do you think? That he's going to welcome you back with open arms after you've connived with his enemy to bring him down?"

"I don't care Aidas! I just need to get that off my mind. If he doesn't want me anymore after that then it's fine."

She sighed as she blinked back tears. Her head hurt so bad for no reason. She tried not to focus too much on the pain.

"I just need everything to go back to normal."

"Normal?!"

Aidas laughed.

"Normal?"

"Yes normal!"

She snapped at him angrily and Aidas walked up to her until he was a mere few inches from her face. Everything about him was intimidating, he oozed of power and strength but deep in his stormy grey eyes she found something else, a softness that she rarely saw.

She wondered what his true eye colours were, well, with the way everything was going she was guessing she would never know.

"Lacey, nothing about you is normal."

He whispered as he ran a chilling finger across her cheek.

"Nothing about you will ever be normal. There's no way you're going to be able to run away from what you're becoming."

"What? What? What do you mean?"

She asked frantically and Aidas shook his head.

"Gods... I can see it already, you don't even know it yet. You can't even feel it."

He emphasised with emotion and Lacey searched his eyes frantically for answers.

"Aidas... What are you trying to tell me?!!"

"You'll find out soon enough."

He walked back slowly.

"You can keep everything. I don't care for them. I already gave you, I see no reason why I have to take it back."

"Thank you."

Lacey murmured and Aidas shrugged as he walked aimlessly around her room.

She felt bad, had she been too harsh on him? Was she doing the right thing? Those were the questions that didn't leave her mind.

"I don't think it's going to be a good idea tell Hunt what transpired between us. But if you want to, I'm not stopping you. I'm willing to take the blame for it all."

"Does that mean I'm free to go?"

Lacey whispered and Aidas turned to her, his eyes flashing quickly from the stormy grey to a brilliant amber.

"You were never a caged animal. You were always free to leave."

There was another uncomfortable silence as Aidas looked deep in thoughts while Lacey appeared uncomfortable. She had thought she was doing the right thing, but why did she feel so uneasy, why couldn't she take her mind off it.

Why did it hurt so bad?

Those were the questions that were constantly in her brain.

"I hope he makes you happy. At least... I know he'll keep you safe."

Aidas turned to leave, moving to the balcony with swift steps.

She released her breath and he paused.

"But... Beware of monsters Lacey, they're all around you."

Monsters?

What does that even mean?

She asked herself as he jumped off the balcony.

How did he do that?

She thought as she ran towards the balcony and met him down already. There was no way a human being would have jumped down from her balcony and make it out alive without breaking a few bones.

But when it came to Aidas she believed he wasn't even breaking a sweat.

She was going to miss him. Incredibly, she felt as started to walk back into her room.

She was halfway to her bed when a sharp pain in her head made her scream and fall to her knees.

"Is it even wise? Going to the mountains in such a critical moment? I mean... We're so close to finding the murderer."

Suna persisted. She was trying so hard to convince Hunt that they needed to stay back. The next murder would be in a couple of days, she and Aidas could avoid it.

Hunt shook his head.

"I don't think we are. I mean... A demon?!!! In Aron City? Even the council will have a hard time digesting that one."

"Have you told them though?"

His brother questioned with his arms crossed and Suna and Hunt both shook their head.

"Unfortunately , the council is more concerned with other trivial things, like a new candidate so close to the elections."

"Bunch of fools."

He muttered under his breath as he paced around his office.

"That's not even the issue right now. Hunt, I'm telling you, I have a lead on this. All I need is your help."

"Of course Suna, I'm at your disposal if you need anything."

Suna nodded her head.

"Good. First things first, can we skip the pack meeting? We have more pressing issues at hand and one gathering won't hurt us."

Hunt shook his head.

"Believe me, I would if I can. I don't even want to go. Candy's been going through a lot lately and I need to stay with her."

His brother Ruhn frowned, Suna rolled her eyes too.

"You've been spending an awful lot amount of time with that girl."

He said suspiciously and Hunt shrugged.

"So? I like her."

Suna raised her eyebrow.

"Are you sure you like her? Or is this the guilt from Lila's death eating you up?"

His brother asked and Hunt furrowed his eyebrow.

"What the hell do you mean?"

Ruhn rolled his eyes.

"We all know Lila's death wasn't your fault but you never stopped blaming yourself. Now, you've met Candy, her sister who looks exactly like that and it feels a bit like you're overcompensating."

"You feel the need to protect her because you haven't forgiven yourself for what happened to Lila your mate..."

"Okay! Okay! Enough of all that! Don't we have more pressing issues to talk about?"

Suna snapped.

"Yes, we do!"

Ruhn answered while eyeing his brother who was strangely silent.

Suna sighed.

"Like I said, I need your help. If we're going to catch the demon causing these murders, we'll need to find the spot where it has been summoned."

"The council keeps record of all the places where there were cracks in our world and the underworld. I believe there's about three in Aron City."

Hunt replied.

Suna smirked...

"We need to get to those locations Hunt. If we can trace them..."

"We can get the demon. And who summoned it."

He finished her sentence with a smile.

An idea popped into his head.

"Wait! I know how we can get the locations. But there's one issue."

"What is it?"

Suna asked impatiently.

"The job has to be done tonight."

Candy.
