Chapter 46
"Come on! How long do you plan on hiding this from them?"
Crispin asked as he walked towards the Council. Suna shared a glance with Hunt.
He was just as confused as she was. They didn't know what was going on. And it Crispin knew something, he wasn't going to tell them.
Majority of the Council members were busy whispering amongst themselves.
"Enough of this nonsense! Have you managed to capture the murderer or not?"
"No, you have not! But you come here and point accusing fingers when you should be doing your job!"
Another spokesman shouted and Suna shrugged.
"Well, have you considered that telling me the whole truth in the first place will help me do my job better? Because it seems like you all know something we don't!"
She snapped angrily.
"Hades Vigilanco isn't a topic to discuss. Not today, not any other day. Now, what else do you have for us?"
Millie, a Council member asked dismissively and Suna stared at all of them in disbelief. They really cared much more about protecting their reputation and whatever happened than than the thought of people dying.
It was sickening. She quickly gathered herself. She was going to play their game, if that was what it would take to find out what happened.
"Well. More demons are going keep entering the city. We've managed to place guards at the Church to make sure they're monitoring everything but I don't have the authority to place them at the other locations."
The council went quiet for a while and they started mumbling. Debating on whether or not they needed to secure the other locations. It took a while before they arrived at a conclusion.
"Secure the other locations. Make sure your men are at each and every one of them."
The spokesman of the Council stated.
Suna nodded.
"Will do."
Crispin smirked, he wasn't backing down easily.
He walked in front of the Council. Most of them glared at him.
"What about the obvious suspect? Are we just going to let her run around freely?"
He asked and majority of them sighed.
"Even if she was a suspect like you say. Calling Ianthe for questioning is a very dangerous move."
Hunt's father answered and everyone turned to pay rapt attention.
"The Faes aren't very easy Supernaturals to deal with. An attack on Ianthe would be seen as an attack against the Faes."
"But we can at least have an audience with their Queen. We must make her see reason and at least try and control her sister."
Suna stated and majority of the Council men groaned. She turned to Crispin who wearily shook his head.
"Nobody has been able to get an audience with the Fae Queen in years..."
"Yes. You are right. But perhaps an official summon should do the trick. If she would honor it."
"It's worth a try. If there's hope in saving our city."
Hunt answered.
"In the meantime, I suggest the Council start working on a way to eliminate the demons that are already in our world."
"We don't have to wait for the next murder to take precautions."
Suna smiled at him, at least they took him seriously.
"No, we don't have to. We just have to find a way to draw them out. "
"Lucky for us, we have a skilled demon hunter among us."
She answered as she turned towards Crispin who suddenly looked very nervous.
"You okay?"
She whispered to him and he nodded.
"Yes. Never been better."
He murmured.
"If that will be all. Then this meeting is dismissed. We'll reconvene at a later time. Maybe this time Aidas Vladimir will find enough time in his busy schedule to join us."
The spokesman said mockingly and Suna, Crispin and Hunt started to leave the Council room.
She had called Aidas about the meeting, but was only able to get a hold of Imelda his right hand who had claimed he was preoccupied.
To preoccupied to even try to make an appearance. Seems he was losing interest in being a Mayor more and more everyday.
Suna chased after Crispin down the hall. The man was a demon hunter. Of course he knew something. And with the way he talked at the Council, he definitely knew the story of Hades and Ianthe.
The Council was trying to hard to evade her questions. She didn't know why but they were.
What were they hiding?
She thought as she started running to catch up with him.
"Crispin! Crispin!"
She called out quickly and he slowly paused while in the middle of shrugging off his plaid jacket.
There was a scowl on his face that relaxed a bit as soon as she caught up with him.
"Wait! Wait! Can we talk?"
She asked and he looked at his watch.
"I have a lot of places to be right now."
"I know. I know! I'm sorry. But back in there you seemed to know a lot about Hades and Ianthe I was just wondering if you could tell me what transpired between them and the council..."
She said while panting heavily.
"Forget it. Just do your job..."
"How? Hoe can I forget something so vital? It's going to help me to at least understand this! What did Hades do."
Crispin shrugged as he looked around. Talking about it in the State Building was too risky.
To be quite honest he didn't want to talk about it at all.
"We can't talk about it here."
He whispered in a low voice.
"But I can tell you that you should be very careful with the council. They're willing to go a long way in protecting their secrets."
He said and started wslijg away.
Suna sighed as she stomped her foot on the ground.
What did they do?
"We need to talk."
Lacey said the minute Hunt walked into the apartment. It was late and he was tired, he had spent almost the entire day at the Council, but Lacey looked so bothered and worried.
He wondered if it had anything to do with her magic. He knew she had sleepless nights and nightmares sometimes.
"Are you okay?"
He asked as he rushed to her side. She was seated at the edge of the bed in sweatshirt and sweatpants. Her eyes had this sort of far sway look in them. Like she was there but not there.
"What happened? You know you can tell me anything right?"
He asked as he pulled away strands of her hair from her face.
"I'm so sorry Hunt..."
"Sorry? Sorry about what?"
"About everything! You've been amazing."
"You're here when nobody else is and you've always been here for me. I don't deserve you."
"Shhhhhh. What are you saying?"
He asked in surprise as he pulled her face close to his. She couldn't even look into his bright green eyes.
She knew she was wrong.
She and Hunt, they didn't know what they were yet and the lines of their relationship was still very much blurred.
But it didn't mean she didn't like him.
She also couldn't pretend like he wasn't into her too.
Everything he had done for her showed one way or the other his feelings for her.
He had also tried to confess it as subtly as he could on many occasions.
It wasn't fair to him.
He lost her sister, his mate. From what she learnt about mates, mates were soulmates. Life long partners.
Mates had an unbreakable bond.
She would never be able to replace that, even though he pretended that there was nothing between them. The simple thought of losing your soul mate would hurt.
"I haven't been fair to you. I know and I apologise."
"You've shown me love and care and I have repaid you insensitively."
"You're an amazing man Hunt. and when I'm around you I feel so much at peace with myself."
She smiled as she touched his cheeks.
"I feel safe. I feel loved and protected. It's the best feeling ever!"
She wiped away stray tear.
"But. I don't know... I don't know what's wrong with me but I can't continue denying the feelings I have for Aidas."
The smile slowly fell off Hunt's face.
"And the past few days have made me realise that I want him in my life as much as I want you in my life."
"And that's selfish. I know it is."
"It's also unfair to you both."
Hunt made a move to talk but she raised her hand.
Stopping him before he even uttered a word.
"And no. I can't choose. At least... Not right now."
"That's why I'll be gone for a few days."
"What?! Where?"
"My Dad's."
She pointed to the small bag on.the bed.
"I'll be staying there for a few days. To clear my head. It'll do me some good."
Hunt struggled to talk, but the words didn't come out of his mouth. He was shocked.
Of course it hurt.
She liked Aidas.
How could he have fooled himself into thinking that she didn't.
The signs were there. The way they looked at each other. The way she talked about him.
He should have seen it.
"Don't go! Please don't go Lacey."
He called out as he reached out for her, holding her hand.
Lacey paused and slowly turned back, wiping away the tears from her face.
"Hey. You'll be fine without me."
She whispered as she edged closer to him.
So close that she could smell his cologne.
She took one more sniff of him, her hands on his chest.
She was definitely going to miss cuddling up with him at night.
He was always so warm and she loved being in his arms.
She raised her heads up slowly
She was going to miss seeing his face too.
Her eyes travelled to his lips and she planted a soft kiss on them. Hunt responded quickly, his hands grabbing her waist and drawing her closer to him, his lips entwined with hers passionately.
Lacey pulled away a few seconds later. She didn't want to lose herself in his touch.
She walked away without looking back. Even as Hunt kept on calling her name.
She feared that if she stopped, she'd go back unto his arms and never leave.
She kept walking and didn't look back, until she was on the streets and walking briskly, walking towards the nearest taxi.
"Trouble with wolf boy."
A voice said behind her and she sighed and paused.
Lacey rolled her eyes.
"I knew you were right behind me."
Lacey said as she turned and glared at her mother. There was a sneaky smile on her face.
Yvaine shrugged.
"How did you know? Was it my aura that gave me away? Or you knew someone was following you?"
Lacey shrugged. She had felt it the minute she left the building. That her mother was following her. Ever since her mother had kidnapped her, Lacey was sure they were connected in some way. In a way that made her notice when she was close to her.
"Does it matter?"
Yvaine smiled.
"You're right. It doesn't. So, are we doing this the easy way or the hard way?"
She asked and Lacey raised her eyebrow.
"Neither. We're doing this my way. And my rules."
"Lead the way Mother."
