Chapter 42.
It was her last day at the hospital and she was ecstatic.
She could finally leave. She had been itching to leave but she knew it was necessary for her to recover. The demon attack on her body had significantly slowed down and messed up her healing rate. If Hunt had not found a way to get her to the hospital soon, she was afraid that she would have died.
That was how terrible it was.
Her men had been popping in and out of the hospital to give her reports and say hello, a lot was still happening, although most of the people they were protecting were safe, investigations were still ongoing.
At least till the culprit was found before wrecking more havoc on the city.
Ruhn on the other hand barely left her side, he always found a way to stay with her even after she begged him to leave.
Hunt had also popped in twice. She understood the reason for his absence, he was busy looking for Candy.
Fortunately, last she heard Candy had been found and everything else could go back to normal.
They could face the real problems they were having.
Like how the Council had managed to hide the deaths of sixty six people and cover it up as an accident.
It was horrendous and grossly terrifying that they could do something so despicable.
Whoever summoned the demon was doing was causing a lot of havoc. And it was only a matter of time before word got out and everyone in the city figured out that something was wrong somewhere.
The Council wouldn't be able to continue covering up the deaths as accidents anymore.
And when Aron City is presumed weak, the other Cities would certainly begin to exploit it.
They would poke their nose into everything that had to do with Aron City under the guise of providing assistance or guide while in reality they would be doing the complete opposite.
She decided that to get to the root of the problem she needed to go to the places where the murders had been committed.
Investigations were still going on and she had been provided detailed reports on each and every one of them but she always liked to examine the scene of the crime herself to find whatever it was that was missing.
She needed to go with a witch too, a powerful one that could try to arrange the pieces of whatever it was that happened at the scene.
It would not only give them a better explanation, it would also help with the investigation.
She was busy tying her shoe lace when Ruhn came in with her phone in his hand.
He had a grim expression on his face and two of them were standing side by side.
"What? What's going on?"
She asked as she looked up at him and he shook his head.
"There's been another attempted break in at the State Building. Someone or something is trying really hard to get in."
He said as he handed her her phone.
"The Council men want the protection at the State Building amped up. They also needs witches to cast more protection spells, to strengthen the barriers."
"Did the cameras catch anything?"
She asked and Ruhn disappointed look gave her an answer
"Oh no. They didn't sadly. Some kind of weird energy seemed to mess with the cameras and they tripped off seconds before the attempted break in."
"Was anything lost?"
She asked and he shook hid head.
"No, but this is the third break in at The State building. They are really trying to find a way in."
"I know..."
Suna muttered under a breath.
"Makes me wonder what the hell is so special about that place that they keep trying."
He added and Suna paced around her tiny room deep in thoughts.
"Maybe they're testing the building's defences. But still, I'm going to have to talk to the damned council about all this."
"They're hiding something."
Ruhn nodded.
"I believe they are. My Dad has been very jumpy these days. I asked Hunt to try and talk to him but he's too preoccupied with Candy or whatever her name is to think straight."
"Oh yes. Who found her?"
Sun a asked and Ruhn rolled her eyes.
"Aidas found her. And guess what, she's half Fae."
"Wait... Wait a minute, Aidas Vladimir?"
Suna repeated and Hunt nodded.
"Apparently she was working with him to spy on Hunt, trust me it's so confusing. I really don't know why he's still so smitten with her."
Suna shrugged, she always felt that whatever connection Hunt felt with Candy was because of Lila.
She was aware that when Lila was alive she and Aidas weren't the least bit close but perhaps the mating bond was still there and some how it had extended to Candy. Especially since Candy and Lila were sisters.
"So, now that you're getting discharged, what next?"
Suna handed him her phone.
"First, we visit the places where those deaths take place. Then we go to all the cracks and Veils in the city we found on that map."
"We'll be checking for unusual activity, anything strange. Anything to show that our demon summoner isn't summoning more demons."
Ruhn nodded his head.
"Sure, okay. Do you need anything?"
Ruhn asked and she nodded.
"Yes. I need a witch.
"I knew I'd find you here..."
Yvaine said to the cloaked figure who had her back turned to her and there was no reply. Only a gust of wind.
"When will this madness stop Ianthe?"
She questioned. Her hands were tucked in her cloak, far away from the shivering cold that plagued the top of the mountains.
"Madness? Whatever do you mean My Queen?"
The soft, slightly mocking angelic voice of Ianthe called out, her back was still facing Yvaine. But Yvaine could almost see the look on her face. It was going to be nothing more than a sneer on her perfectly beautiful face.
Yvaine had had a long trip, after a very unsuccessful attempt with Lacey which had ruined her plans, she had to look for other means to solve her problems.
Unfortunately, Aidas and Lacey had also managed to flee, she could go after them if she wanted but time wasn't on her side. Especially with a ticking bomb like Ianthe in her hands.
"You're messing with them. We don't deal with humans Ianthe."
"I will use whatever I have to get what I want."
She answered sharply and Yvaine inhaled sharply.
There was only so much she could do trying to curb her sister's excesses. But if the Fae Elders has much as got wind of what was happening in Aron City they would be forced to intervene. And they would also be quick enough to find a means to call Yvaine incompetent.
Ugh! They had been a thorn in her flesh for years, in a way, they kept her in check. In other ways, they made her life a living hell.
That was why she was Queen and Ianthe could never dream of taking such a position.
A day has Queen of the Fae Kingdoms and Ianthe would go mad. Especially with all the rules and sacrifices she had to make.
"I don't want another war. There are smarter ways to go about this?"
"War?"
Ianthe scoffed
"They've barely been able to figure out what's happening. And if there's any war they would be waging, it'll be against the demons, not Faes."
"I doubt they'd even think that we're in any way involved."
She added with a shrug. Her back was still turned to her sister as she continued to look down from the mountain top.
"I can't say the same about you though. Your little spat with that halfbreed spawn of yours has raised quite a few eyebrows."
Yvaine rolled her eyes, as usual her sister would look for a way to direct the blame on her.
"I have that under control. Besides I've been as discrete as possible while all you've done is use some silly demon to kill people around."
"Everything I'm doing is for the greater good Sister."
Ianthe said, practically spitting out the word sister with disdain and disgust evident in her voice.
"The greater good? I beg to differ!"
"Stand down Ianthe. Or I'd be forced to put you in your place and remind you why I'm Queen."
There was a long silence has Ianthe slowly turned, removing the hood of her cloak.
She smiled demurely. Her iridescent blue eyes seemed to glow in the night.
"You wouldn't want to get in my way Queen Yvaine. We both know what happened last time you did."
She said grimly and Yvaine clenched her jaw hard.
"You lost a daughter. Clearly you're not ready to lose another are you?"
Yvaine sighed.
Ianthe got on her last nerves.
"Sit this one out Queen. All will be over soon."
She said as she started walking away, back towards the path that led down the mountain.
She turned after walking a few paces with a smile on her face.
"Although I do welcome your help. i seem to remember how we make a pretty good pair Yvaine."
Lacey held out her hand in shock. Pulsing from her fingertips was a strange, bright light. She watched it flicker, changing colors from amber, to ruby, then back to gold. She clenched her fist, her nails digging into her palms.
This wasn't supposed to happen. At least not at the moment. Everything had been going well, everything was fine and she had been trying so hard to forget all the strange things that had happened before.
Her powers had only manifested on the day of her Settling, after that, nothing noteworthy had happened.
Lacey sighed, slumping against the wall. What am I supposed to do now? She asked herself.
With trembling fingers, she clutched the mirror on the wall for support. Threads of silver wind of the edge in stunning floral designs. The glass surface was covered in dust. She held up her hand hesitantly, and touched the glass. Immediately, frost covered the whole glass.
She yanked her hand back quickly.
She doubled over. Her mouth was filled with the coppery tang of blood, and it felt like fire was rushing through her veins. she moaned as her vision shifted and the world erupted with colors. At first, it hurt, but then she was suddenly filled with confidence and power. She pushed herself up. In the mirror, She could see her mouth was set in a hard line. Her eyes were glowing gold. The light burned brighter and she curled her fingers up.
This was her magic.
This was her new life.
