Chapter 35
Dylan POV
I was already in bad shape, my mind was cloudy with constant reminder of what King Josh did. I don't care how mouthy I am or even if I deserved some form of disciplining, he went far too hard.
"Do I have a choice?" We both knew the answer, I had absolutely no choice at all, what the king wants he gets.
"I promise you... I won't let him touch you." How the beta can make a promise like that is beyond me, but he sounded sincere.
I closed my eyes tight and tried to force the fear away as I heard his grace speaking outside the room. I forced myself to focus on the rhythmic movement on my back where the doctor was now applying some form of healing ointment, when I heard the door click open and closed.
"Fucking hell..." The kings words rang through the room as his movements stopped dead and a chuckle met my ears. The bastard was laughing at my state, he found my torture and humiliation amusing, his chuckle made my stomach sink and the overwhelming urge to vomit struck me. This man was horrible. "You know if you had just accepted my mark I..."
I didn't want to hear him state again that if I'd just given my permission then he wouldn't have taken such drastic measures.
"Did you come to see me, Just so you could goad me?" I did somewhat snap it as I turned my head away from looking at his face. The doctor was still working on my wounds and Lewis was stood just behind King Josh when I averted my gaze from them.
"I didn't think you'd be this bad, I thought the doctor was just being dramatic." My eyes rolled and my head turned to the alpha king once more. "I forget sometimes how weak you humans are."
How weak we are? I'd like to see him swap places with me and see how he handles everything.
"Humans are a lot stronger than you think, your grace!" I wasn't wrong, we've adapted to be able to accept the punishments dished out by the lycans.
There was once was a time where wolves had to train constantly, dodging threats left right and center in the form of hunters, rogue wolves and even challenges for the alpha position, but as time went on rogue wolves realized that humans were the weakest links and turned on us instead and the trained hunters were rounded up and publicly executed as soon as the new world came into fruition. There's probably a few still alive and hiding out as regular citizens, but most were eradicated. And as for alpha challenges, there are still some now and again, but without the correct training, unless you're alpha born or lucky enough to be born of two wolves, then you have no chance of beating a fully fledged alpha.
"What do you want, King Josh?!" His amused smile fell drastically and his eyes turned hard at my tone. I was done with everything to do with this man, he'd shown me that I was right, lycans will never know true love, and the king was the best example of that.
"Fine, I'll get to the point and be blunt with you, I know The timing isn't great, my queen, but we are to make a trip out of country." My eyes widened in shock. I couldn't even lift my torso up without feeling pain how did he expect me to travel out of the country with him.
"WHAT?!" Why on earth did he think I'd be up for traveling to another country with him after everything he's put me through. Not a chance in hell would I go with him willingly or quietly.
"Your grace, I strongly advise against any form of travel with her body like this." The king growled quietly at the doctors words and looked at my back once more. "The queen needs lots of rest and care..."
"It was only a lashing!" A bit more than just a lashing, a lashing I could cope with, what I'd received was complete torture. "There is urgent business in Australia that needs addressing personally." Australia?!
"In case it escaped your notice, your grace, I'm currently bed bound!" I snapped then seriously regretted it as I saw King Josh launch himself at me. My eyes shut tight and I braced myself for even more pain but none came.
"Her grace is in no position to travel and you know it!" My eyes opened to see Lewis holding the king back, I watched the royal alpha struggle in his betas hold, due to Lewis’s interference, a small fight broke out between the two wolves.
After simply a minute, beta Lewis suddenly spun the king around with some force and slammed him into the wall near the door. My eyes widened at the act as did the kings, the latter of which immediately stopped his struggle.
"She can't travel in this condition."
That was hot...
Wait, not hot but you know, it was nice to have someone on my side for once. I had said it before that lewis was a good looking man, but seeing him stand up to the king was something I wasn't expecting, especially when he was standing up to him for my sake.
"And what do you expect me to do with her if I was to go alone? I can't have her locked in the dungeon again, can I? You told me yourself she couldn't stay down there." What? Lewis was the reason the king released me? Why would lewis have plead for my release?
"I'll stay! I'll make sure she doesn't do anything stupid!" The kings movements halted and he shook the betas grip off him.
"She always does something stupid." It appears the king will always be mad at me. No matter what I do. "She's coming, even if I have to drag her out."
"You would drag me out regardless." I wasn't helping Lewis at all but I didn't want the king to think what he done can just be forgotten. He had mutilated me.
"Josh, she's not in a good way and you know it. You went too far this time. She's not going with you! You'll have to either send an envoy or go alone." I felt my heart thump inside my chest at Lewis's words. He really was trying to protect me. He had no intention of letting Josh take me with him.
"You dare tell me what I can and can't do with my own mate?!" The kings voice was slowly rising, while I couldn't help but mentally commend Lewis on his calm demeanor despite the kings rage.
"I do when she is my queen, and in a state of discontent." Could wolves hear heartbeats? Because if they could I should apologize as mine most likely sounded like drums going off in the room.
"She's coming with me..." Lewis shook his head and growled at king Josh.
"She's not going as long as I'm here!" The argument was starting to become childish now.
"Fine!" The kings fist quickly swung and smashed into the wall closest to him, then turned back to his beta pure frustration took hold of his features as he pointed at his friends face. “She stays, but she will stay with you! I swear to the goddess that if One thing goes wrong I will hold you completely accountable." King Josh then took one last look at me before storming out of the room.
“Why did you do that for me?” I asked as my gaze met that of the betas.
“You don’t deserve to be treated like this. No one does.” He walked over to me and placed his hand on my head, the gesture seemed to warm my cheeks a little bit as my eyes met his. “Get some rest, Dylan, you need it.”
He was right, I could feel my eyes closing as I stared at the man who had helped me. Everything about him seemed to have suddenly changed and I couldn’t help the small smile that played on my lips as I looked at him.
“Thank you…” I managed to whisper out before my eyes once again closed. I sighed as his large hand began to stroke my hair, and I heard a chair scrape on the floor, I felt his lips gently press against my forehead in affection before they gently pecked my skin causing yet another sigh to leave me. I was tired, I was scared, but with Lewis here with me, I knew I was safe, and so, although I didn’t think I’d ever be able to sleep peacefully again, I’d managed to lose myself in his touch and fall into a deep sleep.
