Chapter 36
POV Lewis.
How the fuck could Josh think Dylan was able to travel? It wouldn't have been that unbelievable if it was just to a surrounding district, but another country entirely? That's disgusting even for him. I watched Josh take one last look at Dylan, I was on edge ready to intervene again if I needed to, but instead he let out a growl and stormed out of the room.
"Why did you do that for me?" Dylan's quiet voice hit my ears and my head turned to find her beautiful gaze on me. I sighed, unsure as to why I was feeling my heart skip a beat whenever I looked at her lately.
She was a puzzle to me, her strength alone had me mesmerized from the moment I met her, but that day, the day she attempted to end her life, that was the day I first felt it. A sort of bond, drawing me close to this beautiful girl. Her scent didn't entice me like a mates would, not in the slightest, but her touch slowly became a feeling I craved, the more I got to know her, the more besotted I became.
"You don't deserve to be treated like this. No one does." I hesitantly walked over to her. and placed my hand on her head, just hoping to feel her warmth and to ease my mind that she was ok, I didn't expect the gesture to heat her cheeks up as her eyes met mine. "Get some rest, Dylan, you need it."
Anyone with eyes could see hers closing slowly as she continued to try and hold my gaze. She smiled gently and a sigh left her lips.
"Thank you..." Her whisper was quiet yet completely sincere. I was honestly just trying to protect her at first, but now just her smile alone was enough to make me never want to leave her side. Seeing her in such a state of contentment, from just my hand alone, especially after feeling so much pain wasn't something I was expecting, but it was nice to see. All her bodily and facial reactions gave me some encouragement to take things a little bit further.
My hand slowly began to stroke her hair, and I pulled a chair over to where she lay. Before sitting down though, I placed a small peck of a kiss against her forehead causing yet another contented sigh to leave her. I hadn't thought much about the action much but I did shock myself with how affectionate i was being. Her eyes slowly closed, and stayed that way before her breathing very quickly evened out as she fell asleep, all the while my hand never stopped it's motion.
I gazed at her sleeping form and a sympathetic smile crossed my features, as I watched her have one of the only peaceful moments she's had since arriving.
I spent some time just sitting with her, while Josh prepared for his trip, I couldn't leave her alone, especially not after everything that had happened. How she managed to stay as strong as she is, is beyond me, even I couldn't contain my horror at the sight of her injuries, I can only imagine how she must have felt. After an hour or so I knew if I stayed any longer with his mate, Josh was going to go ballistic so I left her with my uncle, I knew I probably should go off and help him make his preparations for his excursion. While I was walking towards Josh's office, I was however stopped by a loud familiar voice booming through the hallways.
"Do you have a death wish or something?" My head shot round to find Oliver walking up towards me, he looked nonchalant as always but there was a slight appearance of frustration.
"What do you mean?!" Of course I knew exactly why he asked me, Josh has always been extremely aggressive and unpredictable when it came to getting what he wanted, even more so now when Dylan is involved. So for me to stop him from being with his mate, well let's just say that even I am surprised there weren't any worse repercussions.
"You need to stop meddling when it comes to that girl!" I just don't understand him at all.
"If trying to help her is meddling then I really don't understand what you expect me to do. I don't get how you can stand by and witness his treatment of her, she's right, he really is just torturing her, and you and I both know it." I was baffled, Dylan was still one of his subjects weather she was human or not.
"No, you're not just helping her anymore, your getting too close. That's his mate, Lew. She's not yours to claim." The more I witnessed, the more I understood her hatred for my kind, we really did see humans as objects.
"She's not anyone's to claim, she should be allowed to make her own choices." A small growl crept up from my chest and I knew I had to swallow my anger down, if I shifted in the middle of the hallway, then there really would be severe consequences.
“She’s human, her choices are invalid. What’s important now is Josh becoming as strong as he can, in order to do that he needs his mate, more importantly he needs her marked and mated before providing him an heir. You know that.” I always knew the humans were treated differently, but I’ve honestly been living in a bubble within the palace for too long. I hadn’t noticed at all just how bad they were regarded, in actuality it may have even gotten worse over the past few months.
“Do you know what he’s done to her since he found her?” Oliver sighed and stared at me, his eyes were stern as he held my gaze.
“She’s his to do as he pleases, I’m sorry you disagree, but that’s just the way things are. Look, he’s leaving you alone with her so I suggest you keep as much distance as possible, or it’ll be you experiencing the next punishment. Your ideals are starting to become rebellious, you’ve already taken a few punches from Josh over her treatment, don’t make it worse.” He turned his back and began to walk back the way he came. “Josh is waiting to give you some instructions, don’t throw your friendship away for some silly fragile human.”
Was I really becoming rebellious? I was only trying to protect Dylan, but maybe I have been taking things a little too far. I’ve always seen humans as equals, but maybe that ideal is wrong, we are a stronger species after all.
But then if we are stronger then, we should be using that to protect them, after all wolves wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the humans who called upon the moon goddess for change. I wonder if she has some sort of distant relation to the first ever lycan? She’s strong enough. She’s the only human I have ever met that has been through so much and still hasn’t given into our ways, and hasn’t lost sight of a better world.
I suppose it didn’t matter though, Oliver was right, she was Josh’s mate, the soon to be queen, she wasn’t mine nor would she ever be.
I quickly followed Oliver into the kings office and found him sat behind his desk, looking over some documents. His uniform was regal which meant it really was official business he had to attend too.
“Lewis!” His voice was commanding straight away and it put my body on edge. “The rebels in Australia have gotten out of hand and need to be dealt with immediately. I’m currently unsure as to how long I will be gone, I have tasked my mother with educating Dylan in the ways of nobility so I imagine she will be rather busy in the upcoming weeks. Your job is to keep her in line, I entrust you to discipline and educate my queen as and when needed. I give you permission to use force when required, and you have full access to the dungeons. Any issues you are to report to me immediately, I am very apprehensive about leaving her here alone. Do you understand me?!”
“Yes, your grace.” Thank the goddess, maybe she’ll get a bit of rest bite while the king is away. I’m not going to lay a finger on her while I’m watching over her, the same can’t be said about the queen though.
“Go, you should be with her. Make sure she gets up soon, she can’t be lazy for much longer. The people need to know she’s ok, or the number of traitors in the west will only increase.”
One thing was definitely certain, the kings treatment of Dylan, was without a doubt fueling the already growing rebellion, and it was only going to get worse!
