Chapter 69

Adrian POV

That girl had a death wish. It was official, Dylan really did want to die. Her words struck everyone as she stared at the king her voice was hard, when she struck the final verbal blow causing him to shift out of rage. A small smug grin played out on my lips at her words, she knew exactly what to say without even thinking too much about it, she always did, even from the very beginning.

I watched her getting grabbed, and frowned when she refused to stop talking even though the king had already left. There was absolutely no hint of fear in her tone as she shouted over the crowd while being dragged away, hundreds of flashes from cameras went off as she passed everyone and was forced back to the pack house. She had guts, and she wasn't afraid to show it, even after everything.

The voices of the humans became loud as they all began to speak about the events that just unfolded, my only thought was of the human queen, who would most likely end up being killed for her mouth alone.

Honestly, Dylan had always been like this, and Secretly, I used to imagine her being gifted to me, in fact there were quite a few of us who all wanted her at some point or another, we used to talk about it a lot. Also seeing the look on my fathers face if I ever did bring her home as my mate would have been priceless, especially as for the past 5 years all I've heard about her was how much she and her blatant rebellious attitude vexed my dad and caused panic to rise within the pack. So much so that in the week leading up to her claiming, a public execution was in talks.

Even while we were in school, she never failed to amuse me, from the very few interactions I actually had with the girl she always made me wonder about the rebellion. With her at the helm, would they actually have a shot at defeating my kind? Even now after watching her speak, I was pretty convinced of it. I understood now why people called her the future. She wanted change, but not at the expense of one species in particular. She wholeheartedly believed in equality, her ideals had changed during her time in the palace, anyone with eyes could see that.

After watching the royal envoy race after their king, I charged home quickly after my father. Upon entering the pack house I found him stood pacing the floor threateningly next to Dylan while she sat on the wooden flooring. She wasn't scared of him in the slightest but even so my instincts kicked in and I stepped protectively in front of her, stopping my father in his tracks.

"You lay one finger on her, Father, and I shall challenge you right here, right now for your position!" My words weren't spoken lightly I meant them wholeheartedly, and I would have done so, but I was seriously hoping I didn't have to. In all honesty I was extremely grateful that the rest of the pack weren't back yet to hear my blatant challenge, as I wasn't sure I was ready to take on the pack as it's alpha, not just yet anyway, I would ideally like to be at least 18 before that happened.

"What did you just say to me, pup?!" My father the alpha had always served the royal family, even before the takeover and the new world began, he was a supporter of Josh's father and the king himself. I never understood it. I liked the world we used to live in. "I should teach you to respect your elders."

A scoff sounded behind me and Dylan stood up to look my father in the eye.

"Respect, is a two way curtesy, one of which you evidently lack. Alpha!" She spoke with a tone as hard as steel, she wasn't helping the situation at all as she took a step forward.

Wolves were able to live freely amongst the humans without them even knowing about us at one point in time. We were able to shift in front of those we chose to let in on our secret, but the rest of the world moved on, unknowing and unafraid.

Me and my sister, were only eleven years old when the new world came into play. We were told from then on that humans should bow to us, that we were superior. We were able to lash out at them in any way we deemed fit, which in time made us complacent to the world that had been created, a world where the humans quickly began to fear us, a world where the mate bond is no longer sacred or a gift, but to some a blight.

My father ruled his pack with fear, he always did, and now the king did also.

"You heard me, alpha!" My dad was angry, he felt threatened, but he didn't appear surprised which made me believe he had been anticipating my challenge for some time. I swallowed as I looked at the man in front of me the fact that I could also hear Queen Dylan's heart racing at my attitude towards him, for some reason made me more nervous.

Everything she had said to the king was completely spot on and I'll be damned if she gets hurt for speaking the truth.

The king shouldn't be calling himself a royal with the way he treats his subjects. More importantly with the way he treats his mate, he should be holding her in the highest regard and making sure she was safe and protected, not being the cause of her fear, or the reason for her pain.

I was talking to Jana last night about it actually, my own mate, looked me in the eye and asked if I'd ever do something to her... how she could even think that was beyond me, but I understood her questioning. She was scared too, the lycanthrope weren't painted in the best light when it came to the king and it had everyone worried, not only humans.

"You had better watch your mouth, son, keep your thoughts to yourself, what the king or I do to that girl is of no concern to you!" He barked out at me and stepped closer to my tense body. "We are superior, it doesn't matter what title she may hold, she will always be human." He turned to Dylan who frowned and opened her mouth to say something only I stepped in front of her once more, I was not going to stand by and watch her suffer any more. "Ste, take her grace to her room until king Josh returns.”

I had to stand my ground with my father and so I just watched as Monroes dad grabbed Dylan and escorted her up the stairs to her room while leaving me and my sister with our father and mates. Ste would never hurt Dylan, I knew that. He was very obedient, he wouldn’t do anything without an order.

"Human or not, she needs protection, can’t you see how corrupt our kind has become.” I didn’t have time to think or allow my self protective instincts to kick in before I felt a hard punch to my cheek bone, it jolted me back a few steps which in turn made me crash into my sister.

“Keep your nose out of pack business. It doesn’t concern a pup who doesn’t know his place.” I know for a fact this pack was one of the closest to the royals, and heeded basically every order we were given, but while both a lump and a deep bruise began to form on my face, I had never seen my father so drunk on power.

I just stared at him as he composed himself before turning away from me and Arya. Off to go give some orders no doubt, maybe he was going to find out where the king went, I’m sure Dylan was just sat upstairs, waiting for him to come back, she’s probably anticipating what he’s going to do next.

“Adrian…” Janas voice floated into my ears as I stared at the stairs where Dylan resided currently. “Are you ok?”

Something in this sick new world had to change, and that girl, our goddess chosen queen could be the one to change it. She must have been chosen for a reason, I have faith in the goddess Luna, she wouldn’t have paired her with the king if it wasn’t for a reason.

“You!” I turned to my sisters mate and stepped towards him slightly, which in turn made him take one step back. “You know a way to get a hold of contraband?!”

I saw shock cloud his face as he looked to Arya and then back to me. He swallowed thickly quickly letting fear take over his while my eyes rolled in my head.

“Your not in trouble, I just need something.” He swallowed again and refused to meet my eye.

“Dylan usually handled the orders we all had. I’m not entirely sure where she got everything from, she would just deliver things to people who needed them, she’d get some extra milk tokens or school lunch cards for her brother in exchange. She never told me because she didn’t want to get me into trouble.” Wow, I didn’t know Dylan did all that, she always did get into trouble for goddess knows what, but to risk everything smuggling things into the district, for some measly milk tokens, that girl really was different.

“What do you know?” Arya asked clearly sensing my tone change.

“I know someone else who knows.” That peeked my interest, I nodded my head and met his eyes.

“Take me to them…”

“Why are you so intent on smuggling in contraband?” Arya asked as she slipped her hand into that of her mates. I sighed looking to the stairs again for what was honestly the tenth time since Dylan was escorted away.

“I need a laptop… and a cell phone!” I knew that would cause confusion, it was only right, both items were hard to come by these days, they were old fashioned to say the least.

“That’s a bit old school isn’t it?” I nodded my head and looked at the three people meeting my gaze.

“I need to be untraceable if I’m going to get in touch with the rebels!” My eyes darted round the room and my ears spiked as I tried to listen for anyone who may be eavesdropping. When I knew it was safe I uttered my sentence, causing more shocked looks to meet me. “I’m going to get her out!”
