Chapter 20: Happy Birthday Jevan

Jevan's POV

After my usual football practice and I hit the shower and got back into my casual clothes, Connor met me in the hallway.

"Hey man, it's your birthday on Friday. You throwing a party?"

"Nah. Not this year," I answered and straightened my sleeves.

"So what are you doing then?"

"I'll just be chilling."

"Cool. We can get together at my place. My parents aren't...."

"Actually, I just wanted to chill with my girlfriend," I cut.

"Your girl?" he asked with a hint of annoyance.

I nodded.

"Alright then. I guess that's cool too." He turned on his heel and I watched him walk away.

Blossom's POV

I couldn't believe it has been four months since I've moved to the US and I couldn't believe it was my boyfriend's birthday on Friday.

It was April and we were now on Easter break. I met up with my friends to ask them what I should get Jevan.

What do you give to the guy who already has everything?

I couldn't find the answer.

"I wouldn't advise you to get him a gift, maybe you should give him something from the heart," Nina said.

"Or something from your pants," Sophia chipped in and we burst into a laugh.

"Lord knows I can't afford an expensive gift and it wouldn't feel right to get him something cheap or fake," I sighed.

"Hey girl, don't beat yourself up over this. Have you asked him what he would like?"

"No," I answered with another sigh as I licked my ice-cream.

We were in a park, near by my house. Although my mother had learn to accept Jevan and me as a couple, I didn't push her to anger again.

The woman could go from zero to one hundred in a heart beat. I wanted to remain on her good side.

After brainstorming for almost an hour, I gave up. I didn't know what to give him for his birthday.

"I'm a terrible girlfriend," I said.

"Wait isn't that... it's that Jevan's sister over there? Oh, and she's with a guy," Nina pointed in Jada's direction.

"Yes, that's her," I confirmed.

"Quick, call her over here. Maybe she can help out."

I got Jada's attention by shouting her name a few times. She eventually came over, without the guy, and joined us on the bench we were occupying.

"Are you spying on me for Jevan?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

"What? Of course not. We saw you and just wanted to ask you a question," I told her.

"What's up?"

"What would your brother like for his birthday?" I asked, feeling flushed when she started laughing.

"How about a tie?" I suggested.

"Geezz. No. He got tons of ties and he barely wears them."

"Okay. A watch then?"

"He prefers Rolex. And do you know the cost of one?"

"Okay then. How about tickets to the movies?"

"He doesn't like going to the movies. He'd rather Netflix at the comfort of his bedroom."

"Uuuugghhhh!" I groaned.

"Look, you don't have to get Jevan anything. I'm pretty sure your company would be just fine and I'm sure that is all he wants," Jada finished.

"Really?"

"Yes. You're all he ever talks about. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to my date."

She waved to us and we waved back at her as she walked towards the handsome boy waiting on another bench for her to return.

"Well, there you have it. Case closed."

___________

On Friday, I phoned Jevan and wished him a happy birthday. He insisted that he wanted to take me out.

"Shouldn't I be the one treating you?" I asked him when he arrived in a new car.

"No. I wouldn't ask you to do that even if it's my birthday."

"I can't afford to anyway," I shrugged.

"Hey. What's the matter?"

"It's your birthday and I couldn't afford to get you something you might like. I'm sure Brooke gave you presents before but I can't."

"Blossom, stop. You've already given me my birthday present. Your company. It means more to me than something wrapped up in a box."

And just like that, my love grew more for this guy. He was perfect.

Our lips collided with each other and I was pulled into a warm embrace.

He smelled expensive like when you walk into a high class fragrance section in the mall with the cool air blowing and there are new boxes of colognes and the scent is slipping through it.

I felt myself tingling as our kiss deepened and I lost myself more in him.

"Let's go to a hotel," I said.

"No. I'm taking you to my home and to my bedroom."

"Okay." We put on our seatbelts and he drove us to his house.

___________

After greetings his mom, we headed to his bedroom. There, I thought he was going to have sex with me, but instead, we wrapped each other in our arms and stayed in his bed while watching Netflix and eating fruits.

"I really thought you would be having a party or having sex with me right now," I told him.

"No. I just want intimacy with you today." He planted a kiss on my forehead and we watched movies and ate until the sun began to set.

It was late evening when I returned back home. Jevan and I kissed one last time and I watched him drove away before I pushed in the door to my house and met the horrible sight.

Police officers were in a number, searching the house from top to bottom while my mother was being yelled at by one of them.

"Mom! What the hell! What's going on?" I asked.

"Where is the diamond bracelet?" I heard the officer asking, "Did you give it to your daughter?"

"What? Leave my daughter out of this and I don't know anything about any diamond bracelet!" my mother defended.

"Mom!" I yelled.

"Blossom! Go to your room!"

"Not until you tell me what's going on!"

"The Diamonds are claiming that I stole from them," she said.

"What?" My mind drifting back to the ring I once noticed in her jacket. "Oh my God. Did you steal from them, mama?"

"No. I would never steal. I've never stolen anything in my life! I don't know what all this is about!"

"Then why are they saying that you did?"

"It must all be a misunderstanding because this is some Kaka!"

I never heard my mother used the word 'Kaka' before.

"Bingo!" a police officer said, holding the same jacket that belonged to my mother.

We watched as he pulled a diamond bracelet out the pocket and placed it into a bag then he found the ring and was about to take it when my mother lunged at him.

"I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT BRACELET GOT IN THERE BUT THAT RING BELONGS TO ME! IT'S MY LATE HUSBAND'S RING!" She yelled with hot tears rolling down her face.

"Bag everything. She's a liar. And she's under arrest," the officer in-charge said.

I watched in horror as they slapped handcuffs on my mother and pushed her out the door.

"Your name is Blossom, correct?" the officer asked.

I nodded yes.

"Your mother stole from her place of employment. The diamond bracelet we found belongs to Mrs. Diamond and it's her most treasured piece of jewelry. Your mother would be charged for stolen property."

At that moment, Mrs. Diamond walked through our front door. "Did you find my bracelet, detective?" she asked the officer.

"Yes ma'am."

"Good. I want her to pay for this. I trusted that woman and allowed her into my home and she had the decency to steal from me?"

"Is.. my.. Is my mother going to jail?" I stuttered.

"No. She's going to be deported to where ever the hell she came from and you're going along with her. I'll make sure of it!" Mrs. Diamond hissed at me before she walked back out the door.

"Deported?" I asked myself as my knees went weak and I fell to the floor. My face with hot tears now.
