Chapter 30: What You Don't Know

Jevan's POV

My fingers drummed on the desk top as I watched the time skip by on my Rolex.

It was Friday and I had a decision to make. Would I take Jason to his dance or join my fiancee's afternoon dinner with the wedding planner?

I almost leaped from my own skin when the door was pushed open unannounced.

In walked Adobi with an extra cheerful smile plastered on her face.

"Baby, I couldn't wait for us to meet Gabrielle. She's one of the best wedding planner in L.A. She even plans wedding for celebrities. I'm certain you'll like her," she babbled on.

"I'm sure I will, but something came up and I won't be able to make it," I broke it to her.

"Something more important than our wedding?" Her cheerful was swept away.

"I'm sorry," I apologised.

"Jevan, is there something you're not telling me? Is there something you wish to get off your chest because I'm really starting to believe that you don't want to get married to me. Why are you making excuses after excuses to get away from the preparations of our big day? Tell me!"

"Adobi, I know this is frustrating..."

"You don't know what frustrating is!" she yelled and tears slipped from her eyes. "I went through all this trouble to get a high-end wedding planner and you can't even show up for one fucking meal?"

She was livid. She even pushed me away when I tried to huge her and she stormed out of the office afterwards.

I raked my fingers through my hair and went to my office shower, took a bath, changed into a casual outfit from the wardrobe and went to get Jason.

The feeling in the pit of my stomach was unexplainable when I knocked on Blossom's apartment door, but I knew I was happy with what I was doing for Jason.

After a few more seconds, Blossom appeared.

"Come on in. Thank you so much for coming," she said and allowed me to enter. "Jason! Jevan is here!"she called.

"I'm in the kitchen. I want chips!" he called back.

"No chips, Jason. Get out here!"Blossom demanded.

I was certain Jason was pouting from where he was. I went to the kitchen and found him with folded arms.

"Hey buddy

"Hey buddy. Are you ready to go to the dance?" I asked him. He looked up at me and smiled.

"Yes."

I took his hand and went back to Blossom.

"If there's any emergency, please call me. And have him back home at nine."

She inputted her number into my phone, kissed Jason and told him to be a good boy before we left.

______

When Jason saw my car, his eyes became wide as saucers.

"Your car is nicer than Hunter's car!" he exclaimed.

My blood steamed at Hunter's name. I got Jason into the back seat, secured him with the seatbelt and I got behind the wheel.

I drove towards his school.

"So Jason, your mom and Hunter are getting pretty close, huh?" I knew this was wrong but I wanted all the details I could possibly get about Hunter and Blossom. Knowing his reputation, he was up to no good.

"I think she likes him," he responded.

"She talks to him a lot?"

"Not really. He does most of the talking. He likes calling her and asking to take her out."

"And what does mommy say?"

"She always says that she'll think about it or she's busy with me."

"Jason, do you know your father?"

"No. Mommy doesn't speak about him. She once told me that he's living a different life from ours so we shouldn't bother him with our own lives."

I eyed him from the rearview mirror. He was looking out the window with the saddest look ever.

I couldn't believe how shallow some fathers could treat their kids. Here was Jason. A bright, intelligent and wonderful little human. Any father should be proud having him as a son.

What a complete jackass his father was!

____________

I pulled through the entrance to the school. Immediately, all eyes darted to my car. I parked in the parking lot and let Jason out.

We held hands and he took the lead.

The dance was already in a full swing. Little boys ran back and forth and mischievously popped balloons when they thought no one was looking.

This reminded me of all the birthday parties my parents threw for Jase and me and we would take turns ruining each other's party.

__________

"Haha! It's the Bastard who doesn't got a daddy!" an untidy looking boy came pointing his finger at Jason and smirked as those nasty words left his lips.

Jason looked like he was about to cry and I wasn't about to let that happen.

I stepped between them, towering over the untidy kid.

"He does have a dad. And if you pick on him again or call him any mean name, you'll see what a bastard really looks like. Run along now," I calmly told him.

Untidy Peter made a bash through the crowd and disappeared from sight. Jason smiled and we went to the dance floor where he showed me his moves and I tried to copy them all.

Blossom's POV

Since I had the apartment to myself I decided to do some reading. I showered and got cozy in bed with a skimpy night gown.

My hands fell on my favorite book. I cherished that thing as if it was a diamond.

I reached chapter fifteen when a knock came at the door. I made a beeline to it.

"MOMMY! I had so much fun! There was music and I danced and Jevan copied all my moves. I ate cake and drank sodas. I loved it!" Jason said as he beamed and entered the room.

"That's great, kiddo. Head to your room. I'll be there to clean you up in a bit," I told him.

"Okay, mommy. Thanks again, Jevan. Goodnight."

"Goodnight Jason," Jevan told him.

Jevan and I lingered at the threshold of the door.

"Thanks so much for doing this. It sounded like he really enjoyed his dance."

"I'm glad I could help and if there's anything that you need, anything at all, whether it's for you or for Jason, just let me know. Okay?"

"Thank you but I think we're going to be okay."

"Are you sure on that, Blossom?"

"Of course I am. You know I'm strong. Always have been, always will be. Jason and I will get by just perfectly without any handouts."

He chuckled. "Really? That's what you're going to call my generous offer?"

"You take my son to the dance and now you think you need to save us."

"I don't think that at all. You're not a stranger to me, Blossom. There's nothing wrong with offering to help a...."

"A what? A fatherless child? A single-mom? An ex-girlfriend from highschool?"

"A friend, Blossom." He then turned away from me and left me staring at his perfect figure walking away.

My heart tugged. But how desperate would I look chasing after him and apologising for my rude outburst.

"What's wrong with me?" I asked myself.

I walked back into my apartment and closed the door behind me.

With sleepy eyes still, I reached for my cellphone on the nightstand next to my bed.

"Hello."

"Blossom! Get to the office right now!"

"Mr. Collinwood? It's 6:30 in the morning."

"I don't care what time it is. You need to get here right now!"

He hung up and I leaped out of bed. I freshened up, woke up Jason, got him ready and took him with me.

It was Saturday and I didn't have the time or money to arrange a sitter for my child but my job had a 'Play Room' area for the employees' children.

_________

"Blossom! You messed up my business deal. Now I'll really be making some cuts!" Mr. Collinwood roared as I walked into his office.

"Excuse me but I did exactly what you asked me to do," I defended.

"Where's the part for the car dealership?"

"With all due respect, Jevan Hollen said he wasn't interested in such, hence the reason I pitched the......."

"I know what you pitched! But you failed to realize that without the car dealership, I have no purpose for you."

"What?" I was shell-shocked, "You've got to be kidding me, Mr. Collinwood."

"No. I'm not kidding you."

"After everything I've done? After all this time?! Why now and not the moment I came back from Paris?"

"Don't make this more difficult, Blossom!"

"More difficult, my ass! You're an unfair person and you will get your karma for this! I don't deserve this!"

"I don't give a damn what you deserve. You're fired. Goodbye."
