Ginger Roy Part 2
"Sodoma doesn't leave loose ends, Gim." He looks at me and gives a slight shake of his head. "Freire brought Mina before the council thirteen years ago at a meeting they had in Australia."
"On the island," I whisper.
"Yes, on the island. Freire alarmed everyone with a terrifying idea: to educate children to become alpha submissives. Young girls who would be trained from a young age to please their masters..."
"Christ!" I cover my mouth, feeling my eyes well up. "That's a crime..."
"The council wouldn’t allow that; everyone was against Freire's idea. She brought Mina to show that her concept wasn’t just theoretical, but rather practical." Roy crushes his fingers against the railing. "Freire shouldn’t have brought the girl; she shouldn’t have shown the council what she was doing, she shouldn’t have even thought of something so horrific. Sodoma doesn’t tolerate mistakes, let alone rebellion..."
"They ordered her death..."
"The oldest council member, Oliver, ordered Freire to clean up the mess. This would serve as a warning to others who might try to go down the same path she did."
"Heavens, Roy, it was a life—a girl who was murdered..."
"A girl who was living proof of Freire’s madness. And Sodoma would never allow a living testament that could expose their vulnerabilities, attract unwanted attention, or encourage others to want to enslave children."
"They killed her as a precaution for a situation that was purely hypothetical. Maybe she would have never spoken; no one would have known what Freire did..."
"That's not how Sodoma operates." He turns his face to stare at the skyscrapers. "Look, Freire..."
"What do you mean?" I blink, confused, looking at him without understanding. "Freire killed herself..."
"She was ordered to kill herself," Roy replies seriously.
"No, Roy, she hanged herself—she took her own life..."
"Just like my father did!" Jonathan turns his gaze to me, revealing what his eyes hide.
I recall the story of Roy and Baby's father. He hanged himself in prison, putting an end to the media frenzy surrounding his case, which suggested he was involved in some cult. He did it to protect Jonathan and Baby, but Freire didn’t love anyone. Why would she kill herself?
"I don't understand, Jonathan. You expelled her from Sodoma five years ago; Freire was no longer part of this... What happened with your father? The journalists were all over it, trying to uncover everything. This was very different for her..."
"Freire didn’t leave that note just to torment me, as Baby thinks." Jonathan shakes his head, speaking seriously.
"She left it for you to know that someone forced her to do it, just like they did with your father..."
"The perpetual silence pact!" He lets the words out slowly, silencing me. "To enter the council, you must make a silence pact. If you become a danger that could put Sodoma in the spotlight, you must fix the mistake yourself, or something of yours will be taken. Sodoma never loses; there's always a price to pay."
Freire was a filthy dog, but she was still clever. If she was using a false name, it was because she was hiding from someone—someone who somehow found her. Leaving the note specifically for Jonathan, the man who hated her most, that she killed herself like his father did when ordered by Sodoma, was premeditated; she knew Roy would piece the puzzle together in seconds.
"My God, Freire really didn’t take her own life—she was ordered to!"
"Exactly. And I'm sure it was someone from the council." Roy turns to me and stretches out his arms, pulling me close, resting his head on mine. "Some council member forced Freire to comply with the silence pact."
"Why was this pact demanded now? What could Freire have that she preferred to protect and take her own life for..." I can’t understand. Baby told me that Freire was alone, that she had no one—only work and Sodoma. Mr. Roy, Jonathan and Baby's father, did what he did to protect his children, but Freire had no one to protect. "Something isn’t fitting, Roy."
"I know, and I believe Mina's name didn't appear on that note by chance, just like mine. I just don't know the reason yet, but I intend to find out as soon as Baby gets in touch with Czar..."
"The Russian? Do you think he demanded the pact?"
"No, but I know Czar was looking for Freire. And just days before his trial, with all the council members about to gather, her turning up dead is definitely something to consider."
"Do you think even Sieta won’t answer the phone?!" Baby reappears, annoyed, speaking from the balcony. "It just goes to voicemail, just like Czar's."
"Have them prepare the jet, Baby." Roy holds me tightly and looks at her. "We're going to move our trip to Moscow up. I want to have a face-to-face conversation with Czar."
