208 - A Goodbye Too Soon

(Trigger warning - Blood).

Blood dripped down the marble statues, sinking into the stones, turning them crimson.

A horrific sight but still not as ghastly as what laid beneath.

Gwen had been slammed against a statue; blood dripping from her forehead, eyes closed as if in death. A basket of food and fruits was scattered on the floor, drowning in the red liquid.

A floating apple was next to Aunt Alice, who laid flat on the floor, blood gushing out from the deep claw marks that had ripped her belly apart.

In the center of this chaos stood George, like a possessed monster of the shadows, with eyes an eerie blue. In his hands laid an unconscious Mira.

Another scream tore through Zezi's throat.

“My family!”

Valerick forced her outside the hall, as guards rushed in while he shouted out orders that she couldn't hear.

She couldn't hear anything anymore.

All she could hear was a loud ringing sound in her ears and the pounding of her heartbeat.

She didn't hear how Valerick had shouted an order for Delice to be found because she was the only one missing in that hall. She didn't hear how the guards had fought hard to restrain George, she didn't hear the monstrous and strange growls that tore through his throat as they dragged him away into the dungeon. She didn't hear the cry of agony that passed through her mother's lips as they wheeled her away quickly, nor did she hear the silence from the unconscious Mira and Gwen as they carried them both away as quickly as possible to get medical treatment.

She heard nothing but this pounding and ringing; saw nothing but they all in the pool of their own blood.

‘Breathe, My Love,’ a voice rang in her mind. ‘Breathe.’

My family.

She wanted to say but her lips couldn't move.

Everything has drowned into the background and all her senses were betraying her.

It felt too far away, and yet too close.

‘Breathe, they will be alright.’

She sucked in a deep breath instinctively and suddenly she could hear again.

“My family,” the words rushed out of her mouth as she looked up at Valerick.

“They—”

“Your Majesty, the Doctor had requested for your presence. It is an emergency.”

It only took them about a couple of seconds to rush down to the ward.

“How are they?” Valerick asked the moment he saw Nicholas.

The Doctor looked disheveled.

“Gwen and Mira will be fine. They only sustained some minor injuries—”

“And my mother?” Zezi asked impatiently.

The look that crept into Nicholas' eyes was all she needed to see.

“No.”

“She must have done her best to protect Mira, that is why—”

“Is she still alive?!” She snapped.

“She doesn't have much time. I’m sorry.”

“The–” Zezi paused, taking in harsh breaths as her body trembled. “There is really nothing you can do?”

“No.”

“Where is she?” Valerick asked and Nicholas gave them the directions.

Quickly, Zezi raced off to the ward her mother was in as she pulled Valerick along.

“Change her,” she demanded the moment they stepped in and pulled the curtains back.

“You are not thinking—”

“I don't have time, my mother is dying—” she stuttered with tears and Valerick's hands cupped her face.

“I know, but changing her could kill her still. You know this.”

“I will not let her just die. I must do something.”

“And what if she doesn't want it?”

“It doesn't matter, ahhh!” She was panting. “Lord Rosil!” She said, her eyes filled with desperate madness. “Maybe Lord Rosil can–”

Valerick’s grip around her face tightened, like a pleading caution begging her to stay sane.

“She is no giver of life.”

“But you are.”

At that moment, the beeping of the machine suddenly increased. Nicholas, along with another doctor, rushed in, trying their best to keep her alive a little longer.

“Please!” Zezi pleaded, looking at her dying mother and then at him, tears rolling down her cheeks, her heart racing with even more fear. “Valerick, please.”

With no choice left, Valerick raced to the other side of Aunt Alice’s bed; his face dipped, and his fangs sank into her neck. The inked webs beneath his skin made an appearance and his eyes darkened until he closed them.

Then he straightened up, blood coating his lips and his chin. He took a step back, watching as they all were.

At that moment, the ECG machine flatlined, but that was no problem; a vampire didn't have a heartbeat anyway.

There was still hope, Zezi had thought to herself, until her gaze met Nicholas' own, and he shook his head.

This time, all she could hear was the ringing in her ears and all she could see was darkness.

As she sank into unconsciousness, only one thought consumed her mind.

George had killed her mother.
