228 - Too Many things In A Moon

He sighed. “A lot. Too much. Please don’t ask me to tell you.”
Valerick nodded and patted his shoulder, his happiness too much for him to take any offence. “I won’t. Now go and run a medical check-up on your Queen and see if she is alright.”

Nicholas’ report had been the same as Lord Rosil's; Zezi was fine. She was still placed under close inspection for a month, she wouldn’t rest otherwise. Relating to her bats hadn’t come easily in the earlier days because there was so much she needed to know about them, and so much of her body had changed. Aunt Alice was greatly missed for all the promises that she made and the plan that she had for her grandchildren. Everyone helped as much as they could, even George. The bats were like him anyway, a hybrid.
Gwen had also been released from the dungeon along with her husband. That had been because of Zezi’s persistent pleading. They were not allowed into their former positions, though, Valerick wouldn’t have it!
Instead, he made their house one of honour and riches, just ike the WoodBurn house of Lady Delice had come to be, so did the PistinCrest’s House. Gwen was allowed to see Zezi before she let byt they were not left alone.
“My Lady, forgive me. Please. I know that I am not deserving—----”
“Hush now. You forget. You are my Gwen, as I am your Zezi.”
That was all that needed to be said. Gwen smiled, and their departure didn’t feel sorrowful to anyone. She sent her away with gifts, a kiss to the cheek, an embrace with Orion and Lyra, and an affirmation that it wasn’t her fault. The King might not see it, but Gwen felt the loss of a child she never even had, and the grief was just as great. This she told her, and Gwen was happy to be seen.
After all, to be loved is to be seen.
It wasn’t a goodbye, it was a see you later. Zezi was going to make sure of it.
Life was becoming better for Valerick. His days were filled with the twins' chatter and fights, who wouldn’t want that? He was also teaching Zezi how to weave the darkness, which she was getting really good at every day. It was a pleasant surprise. He enjoyed her attendance at the Court meetings, and he was in no hurry to replace all the empty seats. The execution of the guard and all the dead lords had put the needed fear in the people, and no attack had happened to Zezi ever since. Sometimes, fear was just needed. Smart decisions too. Gwen’s husband seemed content with his new life, neither did he mourn his father. It reminded Valerick of his loss, one that he was much too glad to mourn.
They deserved it.
Giving the werewolves their freedom was now in full force, and some of his people had expressed their grievances, and he had accordingly demoted their houses from value and treasures from the fines they had to pay. He had to stop when Zezi advised that it would only cause more hostility and make the people believe that he valued the werewolves more than he did them. They were trying other methods, among them were, allowing the werewolves into their society and making awareness programs on equality.
An awareness program was something they had never had before. An order of the King had to be obeyed, and for that they all attended but stayed silent, expressing their grievances by being quiet.
So they did, they kept quiet throughout.
Zezi stood up and pointed at a random vampire in the crowd. “What do you think of werewolves?”
He stood up slowly, fear in his eyes as he looked from her to the King, who was seated by her side. “I have learned a lot today, and they are just like us.”
Zezi scoffed. “Really? Can you swear that is what you think?” The man's eyes were moved to the King before he quickly bowed.
“I swear to you that no harm shall fall upon you for what you are about to say.” His head shot up, his eyes wide with surprise and full of observation. “What is your name?”
“Roja.”
“My name is Zezi. Speak your truth, Roja.”
“They are disgusting,” He said in a shaky voice.
The hall gasped and Valerick though appeared calm to everyone was raging in their mind link. ‘What are you doing? You are giving them opportunities to speak nonsense!’
‘Don’t hurt them. This is needed,’ she responded and he stayed calm.
“How are we disgusting?”
“You bring out furs. It is unnatural what you turn into.”
“Is that all?”
He nodded.
“Anyone else?”
Well, many had a lot to say.
“They should be controlled!”
“They are wild.”
“Fur creatures!”
“They are like dogs.”
“They are beneath us.”
“We could crush you easily.”
“Kill you easily.”
“We are superior.”
“It is my turn to speak. Will anyone not ask me what I think about vampires?” She asked but they all stayed quiet.
That was unfortunate. Zezi had to put herself through so much torture to bring back their courage just a moment ago… and it was all gone again.
Now, that was painful.
“You are greatly outnumbered,” Valerick said from behind her. “Will that be fair?”
“One of me is enough. Try me.”
“What do you think of the vampires?”
“Pale skin, cold, disgusting. It is not what you turn into that unsettles us, it is what you constantly are. Drinking blood? That is unnatural. You depend on us and the human blood you ship in. You cannot live on your own, you will all die without blood. Die of starvation. Werewolves do not need you. If you were so superior then you would be self-sufficient, but you are not. Poisoned blood is all that is needed and you are all gone, bloodsuckers.”
Mumbling.
“I am not finished. With our technology, we will advance a point whereby killing you will come to us as easily as you claim it is to kill us. That period quickly approaches. Even if you continue to hold us as slaves and not equals, one day we will revolt and that day will be good for no one.”
“A thr—-threat.”
“No, it is not a threat. It is the truth.” She allowed that to sink in. “Now you may kill us all before then, but then your blood supply lessens, your armies reduce, and you will break apart for it is bound to happen with mind so filled with segregation, and you will kill yourselves, for you will continue to see differences that sets you apart, one that drives you to destruction. It will never end and you will never be able to kill us all, there will always be a werewolf somewhere to pick it up from where we stopped. Is this what you want? We need to understand that this segregation is a threat to all of us.”
The hall brined with tension as they turned over her words.
“We can avoid destruction. There is a way out and you know it. I ask you, is a bird not different from you. Does it by the reason of it being different deserve to be enslaved?”
“No.” It was a faint answer. “Birds are of nature. They should be free.”
“We are of nature too, just different parts of it. Like a garden with different flowers that make it beautiful.” She paused, looking around at the attentive crowd. “If a bird should deserve freedom why not us. We speak the same languages, we look the same, think, feel! We are all victims of the King of the Dark times and if we don’t start accepting each other, the dark times will happen again, not with the King of the Dark times, but with you and I. A vampire and a werewolf executed the one before, what more proof do you need to see the importance of unity.”
The tension in the hall seemed to have sizzled away. They had more to think of now.
“I know it will be difficult to accept immediately, I only ask of you to open your minds and see reasons yourself as I have come to see reasons and now love the beauty I was too blind to see. Give yourself that chance.”
