210 - Strange Occurences

The only reason George’s trial hadn't happened immediately was because of the Queen’s mother’s funeral.

It had been a hasty one.

Six feet were hurriedly dug and a coffin was descended into the grave.

Under the blazing sun, a funeral was held and Zezi’s grieving began anew.

Valerick was sad too but he was more worried about Zezi's health and the effect of that on their bats. He was relieved when she said she didn't want to see George. He would tell her about the execution later because an execution would definitely happen. Up till this moment, every investigation of the unfortunate event had led to George being the attacker.

The strange claw marks on his Mate’s mother, those fang marks on the necks of the dead servants, and the strange thing George had developed into.

It was him, there was no doubt about that.

Or maybe he wouldn't tell Zezi about the Execution at all. She had always referred to George as family and his death would certainly affect her. From their bond, he could feel her grief, but he had no way of telling if her rage would be enough to see him dead and have no effect on her or if there was a chance of her wanting to grant him forgiveness instead.

This uncertainty made him unsure of how to approach the subject with her.

Besides, Nicholas had warned that they had to be careful. Ever since she had almost lost their children once, it was clear that she was in a very delicate state.

So, maybe he just wouldn't tell her.

She would just have to find out about the execution later in the future.

The execution had to happen tonight though.

They didn't know what George was, nor what he was capable of.

It was better to kill him now than have him cause more deaths.

Gwen woke up with a headache, majorly healed from her minor injuries, and with her mind as blank as a whiteboard in relation to what had happened yesterday in that Hall.

When she woke up, Zyon had been by her side and he had been the one to comfort her that everything was alright.

“Why can't I remember anything? What happened? All I remember was that I was leaving the Castle and— Zyon, what happened to me?” She asked, looking around the ward. “Where are our bats?” She asked again even before he could give her a response to all the many questions she had already asked.

“They are with our neighbour. I had to rush here immediately, when I heard the news.”

“And Lady Delice? The Queen’s mother too? By the Blood, Mira! Is everyone alright?”

By now the whole Castle was talking about what had happened last night; Zyon knew every detail. He proceeded to tell her everything that he knew.

Gwen wasn't happy at all that the Queen’s mother was dead. She wanted to leave the ward to pay her condolences but Zyon told her that the funeral had already happened.

“The Queen must feel terrible. Oh her bats! I must go to her immediately—”

“Get better first, my love.” He pressed his hand gently on her belly for her to remain lying on the bed. “Remember, you also carry our bat. You must think of your health too.”

She nodded, as she laid back down.

He pressed a kiss to her forehead, his eyes misted with tears. “I was so worried. I was scared. The things I saw…” he trailed off.

“Zyon…” Gwen whispered, interlocking her fingers with his.

He must have met her in a terrible state when he came, that must be the reason he was this way. He must have seen the Queen’s mother and thought it was her.

Ah, the Queen’s mother.

It was so sad that she was gone. She was a good wolf. It was sad to lose her.

Gwen’s heart ached but she was certain that the Queen’s heart must ache even more. She must be devastated.

“Please, remain my Gwen.” He whispered, his tears dropping on her face as his forehead rained pressed to her. “Remain healthy for me, and for our bat. Let nothing happen to our family. Please, don't even scare me like this again.”

“I won't,” she repeated, quieter. “I won't.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

After that, Zyon said he would call the doctor but he might not be able to return with him because he had to go and take care of their bats at home. They had never had a reason to stay overnight with a neighbour, and they must be losing their minds with worry, so he had to return home quickly.

Gwen knew nothing about George's decided execution because Zyon knew nothing about it. They only knew what the rumours carried to them.

George was strongly suspected to be the attacker and he was being investigated at the moment.

With a final kiss, Zyon headed to the door and Gwen watched him. His limping reminded her of the pain he was hiding from her.

She asked him about his cane, hoping that he would tell her the truth about how much pain he was going through lately, but as usual, he only smiled and told her he had forgotten it at home when he had to leave in a hurry.

He promised he would be back as soon as possible, but he would have to attend a meeting organized by the Lords later before he would be able to return.

After he left, Delice rushed into the room, relieved that she was alright. The King had come to check on her too, partly because he cared and majorly for investigation purposes. Nicholas had started that she was alright.

“Prepare the Grounds.” The King ordered. “We execute the Killer tonight.”

Nicholas asked everyone else to leave so that Gwen could get enough rest. However, before the doctor would leave too, Gwen had only one question.

“What about my baby?”

Nicholas frowned, staring at the clipboard in his hand with confusion in his eyes.

“What baby?”
