217 - An Unsuspected Suspect

It was more than ridiculous that the wolf and Delice had been missing for as long as they had. Valerick had decided to lead a search for them himself when a messenger had come to tell him of Nicholas’ summon.

Nicholas would never summon him if he could come himself.

It had to be Zezi.

His mind raced with madness as he could feel a dull sense of pain trickle in through the bond.

He raced to the room, shouting her name before he could even see her. “Zezi! Ze—-“

“I’m here, I’m fine,” she said from the bed where she laid. There were nurses around her and Nicholas was in the room.

He sat at the edge of the bed and held her hand. “Is it time?” He asked, his question directed to Nicholas, his voice infused with worry.  “Or is something wrong?”

“It is time.” Nicholas had his own worries. He had been unsuccessful in speaking to Irysi. He was so close to throwing himself on the road and going to get but he had been called that the Queen was in labor. Lord Rosil had taken away Mira who was absolutely worried about her mother, shocked that her grandmother was dead, and terrified that her father and her second mother were missing. They did try to keep as much as they could from her but Mira was a very smart bat.

Although Nicholas couldn’t go to Iryis himself now, he had sent someone to go to the Right Province for him. If anything goes wrong, he would know soon.

“Today, your Majesty. You will have your bats today.”

Zezi smiled, her forehead sweaty. “I am just feeling slight discomfort for now.” She paused, taking in a sharp breath. This was her first experience and honestly, she didn’t know what to do. “I’m scared, Valerick.”

“I’ll be here.” He brushed away some strands of hair stuck on her forehead with sweat. “Share it all with me.”

“Mira, she is still with Lord Rosil.”

He nodded.

“She is fine?” She asked, her voice breathy.

Valerie nodded again, ignoring the commotion around him as Nicholas and his team prepared for the birthing process.

“Has George and Delice been found?”

“How did you know?”

“The maids talk.”

“No, they are still missing. I will lead a search once this is over—-“

“And the vampires—- Ah!“

“You are giving birth, worry about Lavida later.”

“We need the water to break. Anytime soon.” Nicholas said to his team.

“Stay with me.” She gripped his hands, feeling fear more than the pain of contraction.

“I will not leave your side, My soul, my heartbeat.”

But at that moment, there was a knock on the door. The search party was not able to find George and Delice still but they found something different, something that might change everything and they were here to present to the King.

Valerick stepped away for only a moment, promising Zezi that he would be back. Outside the room, he spoke to the soldiers urgently.

“You saw this while searching the Hall of Statue again?”

“Yes, your Majesty. It seemed someone had hung it on one of the statues and forgotten it.”

“My Queen! My Queen!” Gwen rushed forward, panicking from the news she had heard about the Queen. She was supposed to have left the Castle to go home since yesterday, but Zyon did not come back for her. Using their mind link, he had told her that his father, Faquad, along with the rest of the Lords, except Lord Rosil, had called for an emergency meeting at their house. She had asked if he wanted her to come home, and he stated that he would prefer if she remained under the Doctor’s care because of their bat that she was carrying.

“Your Majesty, the Queen—-“

“Gwen, you have to be careful. You are pregnant too, remember that. How is—-“

Her attention was drawn sharply away by what one of the soldiers was holding. “What are you doing with my mate’s staff?”

She cried out in worry, her heart breaking already. “What happened to Zyon? Is he missing? What—-“

“This is Zyon’s staff?” The King asked and everyone’s attention was on her.

“Yes, I would recognize it anywhere, I gave it to him.” She cried out hysterically. “What is going on—-“

“Your Majesty!” Lord Faquad cried out from the end of the hallway as he raced to the door.

Never had so many vampires been on the King’s floor. It made Valerick feel on edge and in predatory mood, sensing only danger from this type of encroachment.

“What are you doing here?”

“Your Majesty it is a matter of urgency.”

“If it is such that couldn’t wait, you will not leave this floor with your soul.”

Lord Faquad gulped. “It is about the missing vampires, they have been found.”

“Get on with it.”

“Found dead in Zyon’s basement, he killed them in the strangest way.”

“No!” Gwen yelled. “No! You never liked him, he is like a son to you, how could you lie against him like this! Your Majesty they are trying to frame my mate.” She casted her eyes on the staff again. “Where is my mate?! What has happened to him?”

Valerick frowned and anger flashed in his eyes, as they got darker and the webbed ink crawled up his neck.

“Bring Zyon to me at once!”

“Yes, your Majesty.”
