52. VANYA: NIGHTMARES

“Why did you do it, Vanya?” she cried. “Why did you let him kill me?”
I shook my head and tried to explain things to her, but no matter how hard I tried, the words just wouldn’t escape.
My eyes dropped to her stomach. Her skin was suddenly ripped open, and Charlene was clutching at the organs that were threatening to fall out. Blood pooled at her feet and slowly soaked the carpet.
She made a strange sound, which made my eyes snap up to hers, but they instantly dropped to her mouth. Her lips were being sowed shut as I watched. Stitch after stitch.
Then everything suddenly went black. It only lasted for a few seconds before lights suddenly blinded me. I raised my hand and shielded my eyes as much as I could. Slowly, the lights dimmed until I could see clearly.
Charlene stood a few feet away, her tear-filled eyes accusing and focused on me. Behind her a man stood, face hidden in the shadows. He laughed as he stepped forward, closer and closer to her. His laughter was cut off abruptly as he plunged a knife through her chest.
“No,” I screamed, reaching for her, but unable to help.

***

My body jerked upright in bed, the scream that had risen in my throat dying down to a whimper when I realized where I was.
I leaned forward and raised shaky hands to push the hair from my face. Sweat coated my skin, making the shirt cling to my body. Turning my head, I stared at the empty space on the bed next to me.
Ezra had climbed into bed with me, but he was no longer there. Devrim had promised that he would be with us after his shower, but there was no sign of him ever climbing into bed.
Swallowing, I stood on shaky legs and made my way to the door. All I needed right now was to be close to them.
I searched Devrim’s bedroom, but it was empty. Ezra’s bedroom turned out to be empty as well. They weren’t in the living room or the kitchen, and Devrim’s study was locked.
The only place left to search was Obsidian’s basement.
Icy shivers raced up and down my spine as I gripped the handle and slowly pushed the basement door open. Nobody jumped out from the darkness as I descended the stairs. At the last step I paused and held my breath as I waited.
It was too dark to see a thing, but I could remember the layout. Based on my memory, I made my way over to the door I knew led to his bedroom.
The door opened as easily as the basement door had.
One step into the room and I froze. My stomach clenched and the air got locked in my throat.
I was no longer alone.
The hair at the nape of my neck rose slowly, followed by the hairs on my arms.
“O-Obsidian?”
Silence.
Deadly silence.
If it wasn’t for the presence I could feel behind me, I might’ve thought that I was imagining things.
“I—”
A ferocious growl silenced me.
Holding my breath, I slowly turned around. After a few seconds, I finally had the courage to open my eyes, but the moment I did, the animal attacked.

***

“Vanya!”
I screamed and fought, but no matter what I did, claws dug into my skin and kept me in place. Saliva dripped onto my cheeks from the animal’s mouth that hovered inches from my face.
“Vanya.”
It snapped yellow stained teeth inches from my face.
Cold suddenly drenched me, making me suck in a sharp breath. My eyes snapped open and my body tensed. It took me a few seconds to realize that I was in the shower and that the cold I felt in my dream was water beating down on me.
Blinking, I scrambled to the other side of the shower to get away from the cold water.
The water stopped flowing and suddenly two of my men were there with me. A sob fell from my lips before I could stop it.
“Vanya,” Obsidian rasped as he reached for me.
I threw my arms around his neck and clung to him. “Y-you weren’t there. H-he got me. H-he. . .”
“I’ve got you, sweets. Nobody’s going to hurt you.”
I wrapped my legs around his waist when he stood. My skin still burned where the animal’s claws had dug into it.
It was just a dream, I knew that now, but it had felt so real.
Obsidian’s hand rubbed my back as he moved. His face nuzzled against my hair. The warmth of his breath against my freezing skin offered some comfort.
“Let’s get you into some dry clothes and warm.”
Obsidian’s hold loosened, making panic hit me. He was going to leave me again. I clung to him a little tighter as more tears streamed down my cheeks. I needed him to hold me close because the nightmare still lingered.
“Sweets—”
“N-no!”
He sighed and hugged me again. His lips brushed my ear as he stopped moving. “You’re going to get sick if you don’t change your clothes.”
I shook my head and clung to him a little tighter. “N-no.”
“No?”
“No.”
He muttered something under his breath and pressed another kiss to my ear. “You are going to change your clothes, sweets.”
