Chapter 172
Will’s recovery was slow. The doctors had informed him that taking that bullet as such close range did a lot of damage, but it was the reason he wasn’t dead as nothing major was hit. He wasn’t out of the woods yet and would need a good round of physical therapy. The medical staff agreed that he needed to stay in the hospital for at least a week so they could monitor him. Emma and Alex fussed over him, making sure he listened and did everything according to the doctor’s orders.
On the fourth day, he was restless and just wanted to leave. Alex was in the room with him, telling him off for not listening.
“You’re being a brat,” Alex scolded him.
“I just want to get out of this bed,” Will whined.
“Try getting out again, and I’ll break both your legs.”
“How very Mafia of you,” Will smirked.
“Shut up,” Alex swatted at him with a pillow.
“Hey, no hitting the patient.”
“Yeah, whatever. You need to behave. We came too close to losing you. They were literally out here telling us that they couldn’t revive you when a resident ran out to the waiting area to grab the doctor, saying that they got a pulse back. Emma and I had to live through hearing that you were dead. Even if for a second. It was the worst second of my life.”
Will felt a strange stirring in his chest. He and Alex had always been close. However, it felt strange to hear his friend speak in such a caring manner to him.
“Right before I got shot, when he was leveling the gun… I saw you jump in front of Emma. Why?”
Alex sighed.
“Because she’s family now. You’re my brother. In every way that matters. So that makes her family.”
Will smiled. Pop was right.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. But I’ll still kill you if you ever do anything like to me ever again, you understand?”
Will nodded.
“Good,” Alex continued. He turned on the TV. Even though the incident happened days ago, it was still getting media coverage.
“The criminal known as Ghost was apprehended and is currently awaiting trial at a maximum security prison. Stewart Industries CEO, William Stewart was gravely wounded at a stand off when it seemed that Ghost had turned his attention to an innocent woman. Here is a clip.”
A short video clip replayed the scene. Will hadn’t seen what happened. He watched as Ghost pointed his gun at Emma. How Alex shielded her, and how Spencer had pushed Jess and Sabrina down, covering them both. The broadcast switched back to the anchor.
“Mr. Stewart was brought to a private hospital where life saving surgery was performed. He is expected to make a full recovery.”
“Wow,” Alex said. “I had no idea Spencer did that.”
“He’s part of the family now, too. Speaking of, where is everyone else?”
“Well,” Alex smiled. “We still have a building to worry about. Spencer left to get everything started and took Emma with him. Jess is with them as well, getting the specs situated so she can begin construction. Sabrina is at home with Damian. She’s getting a press release ready about the building and about…” Alex stopped short as if he was going to say something he wasn’t supposed to say.
“About what?”
“About the state of the company and your recovery. She’s been at your office. Boosting morale and everything.”
“Oh. That’s great,” Will said, not entirely convinced that Alex wasn’t leaving something out on purpose, but decided to let it go.
Nurses were in and out of his room. After Alex scolded him, his attitude was better. But that evening brought him a surprise that would lift his spirits even higher. Emma walked in the room, and Will’s eyes lit up. She’d been at work and was dressed in a tailored dark blue jumpsuit with a color matching blazer. A chic black belt cinched in her waist. She paired the outfit with simple point toed black stilettos. Silver accessories accented the outfit. Her hair was set in a loose, low bun with her bangs swept to the side. She wore a bold red lip to symbolize her confidence. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her.
“Hot damn,” he said, taking her in. “You look incredible.”
“Thanks,” she blushed. She made a step towards him, but he held up a hand.
“No wait. Just… let me stare at you for a little longer.”
“Will,” she giggled. “Stop.”
“God… you just look so fucking sexy right now.” His eyes roamed her body, marveled at how the suit sat on her body. He imagined how much better it would look as he took it off.
“Calm down, tiger,” Emma laughed, still blushing. “I have a surprise for you.”
“What else could you possibly give me right now?”
“This.” For the hallway, she pulled in a stroller. Lizzie looked around, her little face scrunched up in confusion, but then a face splitting smile took her over when she saw him.
“Dada!” she squealed. Her little arms reached out towards him, straining to reach him. Emma plucked her out of the stroller and carried her over to Will.
“Baby girl!” he held his arms out the best he could. There was a lot of damage to the muscles in his chest so moving his arms proved to be painful.
“She’s been asking for you and I couldn’t deny her anymore.”
“Come here baby,” he said as he scooped her up.
“Dada,” she cooed, snuggling into him. He winced a bit as she dug into the more sensitive parts of his healing wound. Emma went to go take her, but he shook his head.
“Leave her right here. Whatever the pain… this is worth it.”
After a while, Emma had left the room to get them some food. When she returned, the sight before her melted her heart. Will and Lizzie had fallen to sleep. The baby was sprawled on top of his chest, her little face nestled in the crook of his neck. Will’s hand draped across her back. It was such an innocent moment. The kind she would hope to walk in on many more times. There was no way she could disturb them. She snapped a quick picture with her phone and sent it in the group text she had with the others and sent another message to her father.
Well, that’s unnecessarily adorable- Spencer
STAHP! That’s too cute- Jess
They even sleep the same way-Alex
I love it! Can I use that? - Sabrina
She chuckled under her breath, releasing a heavy sigh as relief flooded her body. Her family was intact, and now nothing stood their way. By the time Will recovered, construction would begin, and her true surprise would be ready. Her plan was coming together flawlessly.
“Finally,” Emma sighed. “Now we can just be a family.”
