Chapter 85
“That piece of shit, good-for-nothing…”
“What’s going on?” Will was about to walk out of his office when Sabrina burst in. Alex followed behind her. She threw a newspaper at his face. Will was stunned by the attack. He gathered up the flying pages and saw why Sabrina was so angry. Blazoned on the newspaper, was the headline:
William Stewart to Marry Childhood Sweetheart, Grace Cunning. A short story followed. After a whirlwind marriage and surprising divorce, William Stewart surprises again. Following the tragic passing of his beloved grandfather, William Stewart called his first marriage quits. Sources say that he has finally found true love and hopes to start a family soon. The wedding is scheduled for next month at…
Will stopped reading. His blood boiled in his veins.
“How could you?” Sabrina screamed. “Was this your plan all along? To marry my friend and then dump her so she could be the laughingstock of your high society bullshit?”
“Babe, please calm down. This isn’t good for the baby?”
“Baby?” Will asked.
“Yeah, we’re having a baby,” Alex answered, his concern giving way for a momentary smile. His hands went to Sabrina’s shoulders in an attempt to relax her.
“Get off!” Sabrina shrugged him away and got in Will’s face. He was much taller than her, but her attitude and anger were not to be underestimated.
“You don’t actually believe this, do you?” Will tried to defend himself.
As they argued, Grace had walked in and heard the screaming. She hid around the corner, and listened in.
“Why wouldn’t I? All Emma did was suffer when she was with you! You humiliated her and degraded her at every turn!”
“I…” Will didn’t know what to say. Did Emma really hate being with him that much? It was true that when they fought, they fought dirty. But when things were good, they were really good. Things were starting to improve between them. Until you ruined it, he kicked himself.
“She cried like every day! My best friend left me because of you!”
“She’s the one who left me! I told her I didn’t want to get a divorce.”
“Oh, boo hoo,” Sabrina mocked. “Poor Will. She finally had enough of you.”
Will felt wounded. He had reflected on their relationship a lot since she’d left. And Sabrina was right. But that didn’t make it hurt any less.
“I wanted her to stay,” he said. Grace flinched as she listened. She knew it. Will was in love with Emma. “When she asked for me to sign those papers... I don’t know why I’m explaining myself to you.”
“You better explain yourself to someone! How could you treat her so bad that she ran the hell away?”
“I’ve been trying to find her!”
“She doesn’t want to be found. I’ll probably never see my best friend because of you!
“How do I know that’s true? How do I know that you haven’t seen her, and you just won’t tell me?”
“You don’t! Because if I knew where she was, you’d be the last one to ever know.”
“Are you done yelling at me? I feel like shit, okay? Is that what you want to hear? I’m sorry she left, but she made that decision, not me.”
“Fuck you!” Sabrina launched herself at Will, but Alex held her back. “My best friend is gone because of you! You pushed her away! And now you’re marrying that stupid bitch. You know she lied to you about Emma. You know it!” Sabrina was panting, winded from her outburst.
“Brina, please,” Alex soothed.
“Are you defending him?”
“No. He messed up with Emma,” Alex said, looking at his friend. “But right now, I’m worried about you.”
“See? I have you to worry about me. Emma is all alone! She’s alone and preg…” Sabrina stopped herself from finishing. Will’s eyes widened.
“Are you saying Emma is pregnant?”
“I wouldn’t know,” Sabrina said too quickly. “I haven’t seen or heard from her in months. And now that you’re marrying this trifling, homewrecking bitch, I may never see her again!” Sabrina swooned, and Alex propped her up.
“Babe,” Alex was concerned. “You’re too worked up. Let’s go.”
“Go fuck yourself, William Stewart. I hope you and that train wreck of a woman have a great life.”
Will sank in his chair and let his head fall into his hands. The last conversation he had with Emma flashed in his mind. We don’t work. Something great happens, and boom. One of us ruins it. The only thing we are good at, isn’t going to save us… Nothing about us was real. A series of unfortunate events brought me into your life… It’s not that I don’t care about you. I do. It’s just that I care about me more.
That conversation was always in the back of his mind. It kept him up at night. He knew that the best thing he could for her then was leave. But the news he was just attacked with enraged him. He knew who was behind this and he planned to go confront them immediately.
Will got to his father’s condo and pounded on the door. He’d only been there a handful of times. As a child, Will was bounced between his father’s condo and his mother’s house. There wasn’t a single good memory attached either place.
“Hello, William,” his father greeted with a large smile. “What brings you here?”
Will held up the crumpled newspaper Sabrina brought him.
“What the hell is this?” he tossed the paper at his father.
“We talked about this.”
“And I said no.”
“You’re going to marry Grace. She’s the perfect wife for you. You have history with her, she’d already living in your home and most importantly, you left that girl, Jenna for her.”
“Her name is Emma,” Will seethed. “And I didn’t not leave her for Grace. I didn’t leave her for anyone.”
“Cancel the wedding then,” Franklin said. “It’ll jeopardize your position in the company. And Grace’s reputation. You know how important that is in our world.”
“I don’t care about any of that. I do not love her.”
“That doesn’t matter. You’re still going to marry her. If you don’t, you can kiss Stewart Industries and everything your grandfather worked so hard to build,” Franklin smiled. He knew that Will cared about his grandfather’s legacy more than anything. “Think of what he would want for you.”
Will sneered at his father and left. This was getting to be too much. He didn’t have any control of his life anymore. He was a ship without an anchor, adrift at sea with no port to call home. His parents’ sudden concern about the company and his life was interesting. They’d never been so involved in his life before, and now they’d taken control of him. Everything was spiraling around him, and he didn’t know what to do.
When did he become so powerless? It happened when Emma left you. As he drove, he realized that Grace must have seen the news by now. He decided he should go home and speak to her. Perhaps they could come up to a solution to this mess together.
