Chapter 79
Sabrina vomited for several minutes, her stomach rolling over on itself. She couldn’t believe how much was coming up. It wouldn’t stop.
“I didn’t even eat that much,” Sabrina said in between bouts of retching. She finally stopped and was able to catch her breath. The attendant sat her down in the parlor and gave her a cold glass of water. “Thank you.”
*Shit, shit, shit.* She thought as she looked upon the ruined carpet. A large stain of what looked like everything she had ever eaten in her entire life settled into it. Magnolia was going to have a fit.
As she felt her stomach become settled, a realization came upon her. Her and Alex hadn’t been very careful while having sex. And there was a very permanent side effect that tended to come along with that. She knew it would come sooner or later. But she hadn’t expected it would be this soon.
“Oh my God!” Magnolia screeched when she saw what happened. “What have you done? This is imported! Do you have any idea how expensive this is?”
“I think I’m pregnant.”
“This is one of kind, irreplaceable… I’m sorry, what was that?” Magnolia froze as she began to process what Sabrina said.
“I think I’m pregnant,” Sabrina repeated.
“Pregnant,” Magnolia said. She clapped her hands together and squealed. “Pregnant?”
“Are you okay?” Sabrina was surprised by Magnolia’s behavior. She leaned over and put her hand on Sabrina’s belly.
“Hello, baby. I’m going to spoil you so much.” Magnolia jumped up and squealed again. She had wanted a grandchild for a long time. Sabrina was definitely not her ideal daughter-in-law, but if she was going to give her grandchild, she’d love her forever. There was the small matter of just having offered her money to get her to leave Alex. It wouldn’t look good on her part to suddenly change her view because of a possible pregnancy.
“Perhaps,” the attendant spoke up, understanding Magnolia’s dilemma. “We should have the family doctor come in and check on Miss Sabrina. That way, we can know for sure.”
“A wonderful idea. Call Dr. Hastings immediately.”
“Right away, madam.”
While they waited for the doctor to arrive, Magnolia moved Sabrina back into the sitting room, and settled her on a chaise lounge.
“Lay right here while we wait for the doctor.”
“This is a very different song than the one you were singing earlier,” Sabrina said, less snarky than she wanted to be. She felt nauseous and weak from throwing up so violently.
“You seem less sarcastic than usual.”
“You try vomiting up three weeks’ worth of food and tell me how you feel after.”
They shared a small laugh.
“Are we…,” Sabrina gestured between them. “Are we bonding right now?”
“Don’t push your luck,” Magnolia quipped back.
The doctor arrived a few moments later.
“I hear we have a possible baby on the way?”
“Yes, doctor,” Sabrina answered. “I’m pretty sure I just had a bout of morning sickness.”
“Have you had any other symptoms?”
“I’ve had a few other rounds of spontaneous nausea. I’ve been fatigued and my period is about a week late.”
“Anything else?”
“Well, Alex and I have had unprotected sex lately,” she answered flippantly. “Quite a few times.”
“Oh, my word,” Magnolia commented, fanning herself.
“How do you think babies get here? You think Alex danced the hokey pokey on top of me and got me pregnant?”
“This is what I mean! Too brash!”
“Ma’am,” the doctor interrupted. “Would you step out of the room please? I’d like to examine the patient and test to see if she’s truly pregnant.”
“Why yes, of course.” She left them alone and paced back and forth in the parlor.
“How exciting,” the attendant gushed. “A baby. Just like you’ve always wanted.”
“We’ll see.” *Please be pregnant. Please give me a happy and healthy grandchild,* Magnolia prayed.
Again, Sabrina was not who she would have chosen for her son. But she was the only girl so far that had the guts to stand up to her. And she was right. She had offered money to Alex’s other girlfriends. The fact that Sabrina hadn’t accepted her many offers let her all that she needed to know. Sabrina really did love Alex. She wasn’t with him for money. And if she was pregnant, she would learn to accept her as she was. Brashness and all.
The doctor emerged from the sitting room.
“Well?” Magnolia asked.
“Congratulations. You’re going to be a grandmother.”
Magnolia jumped up and down with glee.
“A baby! I can’t believe it!” She ran into the sitting room. Sabrina was on the chaise lounge, a small goofy smile lit up her face.
“I’m having a baby,” she whispered, touching her belly. “I can’t wait to tell your daddy.”
“Alfred, prepare one of the extra bedrooms. Sabrina will be staying with us starting tomorrow. She will need to be very well cared for. My daughter-in-law and grandchild will have only the very best of everything! And call my husband and son! Tell them to come home as soon as possible! We’re going to celebrate!”
“Daughter-in-law?” Sabrina questioned. “Not half an hour ago you were paying me to leave Alex. I might break up at him with some point. Just the way you wanted.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I know you won’t. No one has ever stood up to me before or refused my offer. We won’t be best friends or see eye to eye all of time. But you love my son and are carrying his baby. That’s what matters.”
“I’m not going to be any less brash, you know.”
“I wouldn’t expect you to change at all.”
“I think we’re going to get along just fine… Grandma.”
“A grandchild! I can’t believe it! Alfred, come! We have to prepare!” Magnolia flitted away and Alfred followed her. Sabrina sat alone in the sitting room, glowing with joy. Alex’s mother had finally accepted her as Alex’s partner, and everyone was excited about their baby.
“You hear that little one?” she said to her belly. “Everyone already loves you. And everything is going to be okay.”
