Chapter 80

After speaking with Sabrina, Emma decided it was time to let her father know what was going on.

“Daddy? Are you awake?” she called gently approaching his room.

“Yes, sweetheart. I am. Come in.”

Emma walked in and saw that her father was sitting on the side of his bed. He patted the space next to him.

 “Did you sleep well?”

“Not very well. I overheard… some things.”

 “You were awake last night?”

“Not the whole time… I heard when Will was here. You… are leaving him. And… you are hurting.”

“I’m so sorry, Daddy,” Emma held his hands. “I know you were so excited for me when I got married. But I can’t be with him anymore. Please don’t be sad.”

“I am only sad… because you are sad.”

“I’ll be okay. I’ve got a new job in Lyncrest. We’re going to start over somewhere new. I’m going to take care of you, and we’ll be okay.”

Emmett pecked a small kiss on Emma’s forehead.

“Someday, I’ll…be well enough… to care for you.”

 “I love you, Daddy.”

 “Love you, Emmie.”

After making some breakfast for her father, she started to pack up the apartment. She also messaged Spencer to let him know that she agreed to move to Lyncrest and work in the new office. Within an hour of sending the message, Spencer showed up at the apartment.

“Daddy, this is Spencer. He’s a friend and my new boss.”

“It’s great to meet you, sir.” Spencer greeted.

 “Thank you… for helping us.”

“It’s my pleasure. I’ll have my driver come and pick you up and take you to the apartment. It’s ready. I’ve arranged for movers to come and take your things over as well. The office address will be sent to you sometime after that.”

“I can’t thank you enough. I don’t know what I would do without you, right now.”

“It’s nothing. I’m happy to help you in any way possible.”

Emma hugged Spencer. He returned her embrace and took in her scent. *She smells like vanilla and sunshine,* he thought. *She feels so good in my arms.* Spencer tried to hold onto her a little longer, but Emma suddenly pushed him away and darted towards the bathroom and the sounds of vomiting filled the apartment.

“Emmie!” her father called in alarm.

“I’ll go check on her,” Spencer assured him and ran behind her. Emma was violently heaving into the toilet. Spencer rubbed on her back until it passed.

“I’m so sorry,” Emma said after she finished. “This is so nasty.”

“Hey, it’s okay. Maybe you should go get looked at by a doctor?”

“No. I’ve been really stressed out lately and I haven’t been eating well. It’s nothing.”

“I think you should. If you’re ill, you won’t be able to properly care for your father.”

“Ugh, you’re right,” she agreed. “But I can’t leave him alone here.”

“Go,” Emmett called from the kitchen. “I will be fine… for a short while. Please go.”

“I’ll bring her back as soon as I can.”

Spencer led Emma away, going to a nearby walk-in clinic.

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” Emma commented as they waited to be seen.

“Hopefully, you’re right. But let’s be one hundred percent sure.”

“I hate that we left Daddy. I’m scared that he’s alone.”

“We’re not far. And we won’t be here long, I promise.”

A few minutes later, a nurse called Emma to the back. She followed back to the examination rooms where a doctor waited.

“Hello, miss. What brings you in today?”

“I have an upset stomach. I threw up a bunch earlier.”

“Hmmm, okay. Any other medically concerning events?”

“I fainted a while back. But I’ve not been eating well, and under a lot of stress. It’s nothing.”

The doctor scribbled a few things down.

“And when was your last cycle?”

“Oh, that was…” Emma paused. She realized that she couldn’t remember and then she felt all the blood drain from her face. “No. It’s not possible.”

 “Have you had unprotected sex?”

 “Yes, but…”

“Well then, my dear it is very possible. Let me run some tests to be sure.”

The doctor drew some blood from Emma’s arm and ran tests. After a few minutes the doctor came back and handed her a report and sent her on her way.

Emma read the report and her heart fell into her feet. She walked back out towards the waiting room to Spencer. She was having an out of body experience. Her steps seemed to take her nowhere, but at the same time if felt like she was running.

“Emma,” Spencer walked up to her. He waved a hand in front of her face, but she was in shocked. “Emma, say something. Blink, breathe.” He gave her a gentle shake, and she looked up at him. “Please say anything.”

Emma couldn’t speak. She handed him the doctor’s report. Spencer read the report and his eyes widened.

 “I’m pregnant,” she whispered.

 “It’s his, isn’t it?”

 “Yes.”

Spencer didn’t know how to feel about this. As much as he hated that Emma was hurting, he was happy that her and Will didn’t work out. He really liked Emma and had been hoping to ask her out properly after her divorce had become finalized. However, this pregnancy changed things. She was having Will’s baby and that in and of itself created a bond between them. Is that something he could get in the way of? He wanted to be with Emma, but timing always seemed to be against him.

All her could do was help her the best he could. Between moving, caring for her father, starting a new job, and now being pregnant, she was going to have a lot on her plate.

“I’m pregnant,” Emma said again. Her eyes floated over her belly, marveled and terrified by the news. What was she going to do? Her and Will were having a baby. And she was moving to a city over an hour away. She sent Will out of her life, and now she was leaving. And taking something of his with her. *I have to tell him,* she argued with herself. *It’s the right thing to do. But maybe, not right away. I can’t see him right now.*

“Are you going to tell him?” Spencer asked.

 “I… I don’t know. I know that I should. I don’t know what to do.”

“Listen,” Spencer took Emma’s hands in his. “You aren’t alone in this, okay? I’m going to help you. You’ll be able to take maternity leave when you need it. And don’t worry about the rent on the apartment. We give paid maternity leave, so you’ll be okay.”

 “I’m so scared.”

“It’s okay to be scared. This is a big thing. But I’ll be there for you, and your father is getting better. Things will be okay. I promise.”

Emma took a deep breath. The news began to sink in, and she understood that she had to be strong for more than herself now.

“I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me. Eventually I’ll be able to handle this on my own. You’re such a good person, and someday you’ll make someone so happy.”

Spencer smiled. He knew that Emma only saw him as a friend, but he hoped that would change one day.

“Come on. Let’s get you back to the apartment and your dad. You’ve got to tell him the news.”

Spencer took Emma back to the apartment.

“Is… everything okay?”

“Yeah,” Emma said. She sat in front of him and held his hands. “I’m pregnant.”

Emmett’s eyes lit up and he threw his arms around his baby girl.

“My baby… is having a baby! I am… so happy!”

What a rollercoaster the last couple of days had been. Spencer offered to take them to the new apartment himself, and he wanted to ensure that they settled in. Emma said goodbye to her old life, as she carried new life within her.
