Chapter 57

Emma changed into a simple white dress after a long time of thinking to herself. She wasn’t in the mood for the party anymore, but didn’t want to ruin it for everyone else. She didn’t want to let them down, her dad and Conrad.

She was buried with thoughts when Will came and found her in the changing room.

“Are you all right?” he came up and asked.

“I’d like to go, if that’s okay.”

Will sighed. He expected that she’d want to leave.

“Not right away, but yes we can go.”

 “You don’t have to leave.”

“If you want to leave, I will leave with you. Come on,” he took he hand and escorted her out. They stayed long enough to have another conversation with Conrad and Emmett. They said goodbye to Sabrina and Alex, and then Will took Emma home.

On the car ride back, Will could see that she was still bothered by what had happened.

“Listen, about what happened earlier. It’s true, that woman and I did sleep together. But it was only once. We weren’t in a relationship, and I never saw her again. I don’t even remember her name. I don’t even remember if I ever knew her name. I thought I’d never see her again. I’m sorry.”

Emma didn’t answer. She leaned her head against the car window and just look tired. They arrived to the apartment and Will tried talking to Emma again, but she just went straight to her room.

“Emma,” he held her wrist. “I’m trying to explain—”

“You don’t owe me any explanation,” she said. Her voice was dead. “It’s not my business what or who you did. Just leave me alone.” She pulled her wrist away from him and closed to the room to the door behind her. Will was thunderstruck. How could she not feel anything about what happened? She should be furious with him. But it seemed like she didn’t care about it at all. It was like her emotions had been turned off. He knocked on her bedroom door. Each knock chipped away at the armor around Emma’s heart. *Go,* she pleaded. *Please, just go.*

Will gave up after a few minutes and she heard the front door open and close. All of her repressed emotions of the day slammed into her all at once. Anxiety, fear, anger, betrayal, embarrassment, elation, arousal, lust, love, at all once collided in her heart, and sank to the floor under the weight of them.

“I just want to forgot tonight ever happened.” She struggled to get up and went into the living room towards the liquor cabinet. She grabbed the first bottle on wine she could reach and drank straight from the bottle. She drank alone all night, and cried thick heavy tears.

She screamed and cried into the dark apartment. At first she sunk into the couch, spilling her despair into one of cushions.

“Why is this my life?” she yelled. She got drunker and drunker and began stumbling around blind through her tears. She staggered on to the balcony, bottle still in hand. She drank the last bit of wine in the bottle. “Why is this my life?” she yelled into the night. The cool air had no answers for her, and it only further fueled her misery. “I’m a good person! Haven’t I suffered enough? Why am I doomed to be unhappy? Why!?” When the night still didn’t answer her, she blundered her way back into the apartment. She slipped and crashed to the floor. The bottle crashed around her, shards of glass flew everywhere.

Emma cried harder, allowing the drunkenness to have its way with her. A door opened somewhere and someone rushed to her side.

“Emma! Are you okay?” Whoever it was knelt down and picked her up head.

 “Who are you?” she asked.

“It’s me, Will.” He was confused. It was clear that Emma was very intoxicated, but how much had she had?

“Will? I know a guy named Will. Do you know him?” Will didn’t answer. “Well, let me tell you something about Will. About men in general. Men are jerks!” she slurred. “They treat you like trash, and throw you out when they’re done with you. Why are they like that?”

Will stared at her. Despite her inebriated state, it was clear she was in pain, and he didn’t know what to do.

“I’ll tell you a secret though. Shhh, come close.” She motioned for Will to come closer. The gesture was sloppy as though she had little control of her limbs. “Don’t tell anyone. Especially not that jerk Will. Cause he’s the king of the jerks. You promise you won’t tell?”

 “I promise,” he whispered.

“I like him. Despite everything, and I tried not to. I really tried. But I’m falling in love with him. I know right? How stupid of me. How could I let that happen? How could I…” Another crying spell took over her and she wailed in his arms.

Will scooped her up and took her to bed. He looked her over to make sure she hadn’t been injured during her drunken stupor. As soon as she hit the bed, she was knocked out asleep. Will settled in next to her, lightly caressing her face. While she slept, it was the only time she looked relaxed. He chuckled at her drunk confession. For some reason, he couldn’t get the words off of his mind. He snuggled up against and held her for a long time.

After a couple of hours, Emma began to stir. Her eyes flew open and she was met with Will staring at her. She was startled, but realized she was laying down, and that he was cuddling with her.

“Where are we?” her voice was hoarse from crying.

“Your room,” he answered. Emma tried scooting away from him, but he held her tighter.

“What are you doing? And why are you here?” Emma narrowed her eyes, looking at the man standing in front of her. She mumbled.

“Well,” Will smirked, “It is our wedding night, Mrs. Stewart. What do you think?”
