Chapter 33

Matt stopped. Emma looked up and saw it was Will. Relief and dread flooded her. She hadn’t seen Will in a month, and there he was right when she needed him. But he had found her in a terrible position. His eyes were angry, but there was never a way to gauge his reactions. He could have been angry with her for all she knew.
“I think she said she didn’t want you. Twice,” Will hissed, stepping towards them. Emma pushed Matt away and he ran like the coward he was. Emma panted, trying to catch her breath. Her heart rate was still sky high. She felt her chest would burst from the thundering under her ribs. She leaned against a wall and attempted to calm herself down. Her legs were shaky beneath her, and all she wanted to do was sink down to the floor and cry.
“Have you forgotten our contract?” Will said to her.
“What?” Emma was confused. “Have you forgotten that I broke that off?”
“You’re not supposed to get involved with any other men,” Will answered, ignoring her question.
Emma was angry now. She knew he saw what was happening. He acted as though the fight between them never happened or that she sent him that message the morning after.
“I only signed that contract to help my father,” she answered, her voice still shaking. “Do you think I wanted this? Do you think I wanted him all over me like that? I want nothing to do with him.”
Will stared at her, and something in his gaze changed as she spoke. He walked over to her, and looped his arm around her back. His touch was gentle, a direct contrast to how Matt had handled her only moments ago. He moved in to kiss her, but Emma wasn’t in the mood. She tilted her head to the side to avoid him. His lips made contact with the side of her face, and a chuckle rumbled through his body.
Emma wanted to yell at him for being insensitive, but she saw Vivian marching towards them. Her eyes blazed with fury.
“Will! What are you doing with your hands all over her?” she screeched. It’s time, Emma thought. It’s Vivian’s turn. “Let go of her!”
Emma looped her arms around Will’s neck and pressed herself into his chest. Will’s eyes widened in surprise at Emma’s actions. She’d never been so forward before. It was interesting.
“Get off of him!” Vivian shouted. Her usual saccharine, flirty voice was replaced with an ear-splitting and shrill tone.
“Come on, Will,” Emma said, recalling Vivian’s words in that very same hallway. It felt like it was a lifetime ago that her world shattered after walking up on Vivian and Matt right where they were standing. “You’re going have to choose between us eventually. Tell me, baby. Which one of us is it?”
Vivian was incensed, and screamed or Will’s attention. Emma kept flirting with him, and touching him which angered Vivian more.
“You have got to be kidding me! There is no way you would choose her over me!” Vivian screeched.
“Get me out of here,” Emma stage whispered, as she looked at Vivian. Will was stunned, but realized what Emma was doing. It was out of place for Emma to be so flirty, but he couldn’t lie to himself and say he wasn’t enjoying it. It was sexy.
“He isn’t going to take you anywhere! Come on, Will!” Vivian shot her hand out to grab Will. He swatted her away, and smirked at Emma.
“Where would you like to go?” he purred.
“Anywhere,” Emma answered. “As long as you let me have my way with you when we get there.”
He grabbed Emma’s hand and ran off with her leaving a squawking Vivian alone in the hallway. They ran out of the dorms and to a small park on campus. Emma used to go there often during her first couple of years as a student. Fragrant jasmine and gardenia blooms grew wild and created a whimsical canopy for anyone that needed a few moments alone. It served as her sanctuary for a long time. They collapsed into a fit of laughter and fell into a bench that was nestled under an arch of vines and white roses.
“Oh my God! Did you see her face?” Emma cackled.
“It was priceless,” Will laughed. “What got into you?”
“She needed a taste of her own medicine,” she answered, her laughter subsiding. “Gosh, I haven’t laughed this much since before I caught her and Matt in that hallway the same way she saw us. I needed that.”
Will’s face fell at the mention of Matt.
“Why did he come to see you?” he asked, his tone serious.
“He keeps telling me that he’s ready to take me back. I keep rejecting him, and well… you saw what happened.”
“Are you all right?”
“Yes,” Emma was surprised at the sudden show of concern. But she didn’t acknowledge it. She would take what she could get from Will.
“What was that talk about rumors?” he continued. “Seems you’re pretty popular around here. How many men have you been involved with?”
“Me? Popular? I’m sorry. You’ve been gone for a month buried in Vivian’s fake boobs and I’m sure countless other women. I’ve been through hell and back and you want to ask me about how many men I’ve been with?”
“I need to know,” Will answered.
“For the love of…” Emma threw her hands up in exasperation. “Matt was my boyfriend, and I loved him—”
“So, you had sex with him?”
“Are you jealous?”
“Answer the question.”
“You’ve been with probably half the women in the city! Why does it matter how many people I’ve been with?”
“Just answer the question!”
“I was not lying to you when I told you I was a virgin. You are the only man that has ever touched me. No one before you and no one after. Just you. You’ve ruined me for any other men anyway. There. Happy? Is that what you want to hear?”
Will grabbed her hand, and pulled her close to him. All of the fight was knocked out of her.
“What are you doing?” she whispered. Will brushed her hair behind her ears, and trailed a finger along her jawline. His touch sent shivers down her spine.
“You are mine now,” his voice was low, intense, and sincere.
“Yours?” her heart skipped a beat. “I’m already your ‘pet’, aren’t I?”
“No, not like that,” he struggled with his words. “I won’t let anyone touch you again.”
“But you’re going to touch whoever else you want.” Emma wasn’t stupid. As much as she had longed to hear even a semblance of romance come out of Will’s mouth, she knew he wasn’t capable of it.
“It won’t be that way,” he argued. Emma could tell he was grappling with himself. He was unsure and hesitant. Two things that she would never associate with William Stewart.
“What about Vivian?”
“What about her?”
“You’ve been with her for over a month. She’s telling people she’s your girlfriend.”
“I don’t want her. I want you.”
