Chapter 29

Alex turned Sabrina to face him.

“Why don’t I take you home?”

“No way!” she yelled. “The night is great! We are young and beautiful people and we should enjoy ourselves! Let’s go! Wooo!” Sabrina grabbed Emma’s hand and dragged her outside. Alex jumped off the barstool and stayed close behind them.

The cool evening air draped around them, and if possible, Sabrina seemed to get more drunk. She looped her arms around Emma’s, and leaned into her. A parade of young couples and friend groups walked around them. The night was alive with people out looking to have a good time.

“Isn’t my best friend pretty?” Sabrina shouted at random passersby, as she stumbled along the sidewalk. “Hey you! Guy in the green shirt! My best friend is pretty! Do you wanna be her boyfriend? How about you over there?”

 “Sabrina!” Emma blushed.

“What? Is true,” she slurred. “My best friend is pretty, and my boyfriend is hot! That’s him walking behind us! You better not try anything or I’ll kick your ass!”

Emma looked back at Alex who was having trouble holding back his laughter.

“Sorry,” Emma called back to him.

“Don’t be,” he smiled. “It’s cute.”

“We’re young and beautiful,” Sabrina sang into the night. A few people yelled enthusiastic encouragement back. The energy was contagious. Another escape. Another precious few moments where Emma didn’t have to be Emma. But those never lasted long in her life. Reality was never far behind.

“Hey Alex, that guy with Vivian was an asshole. Don’t be friends with that guy! I don’t like him. He was mean to my friend!”

Alex cringed behind them.

“Yeah, we’ll talk about that later,” Alex squirmed with discomfort.

“Will, they left me,” a voice she never cared to hear again cried from behind them. Emma’s automatic response was to look back, and regretted it as soon as she did. Vivian and Will were behind them. Will was holding her up, as Vivian was smashed. “They made me drink. They made me. I’m the most innocent person in the world. More innocent than Emma. I’m a virgin, Will. They’re all liars.” Vivian wailed in her drunken state.

Alex looked back as well. He looked at Emma with an apology in his eyes. Emma smiled at him.

She was surprised to see Will at all. She didn’t think he would come back for Vivian. There was no way to figure him out. *What does he want?* She wondered to herself. He noticed she was looking back at them, and a slow, sexy smile spread across his face. He leaned into Vivian and whispered something to her that made her giggle.

“Ugh,” Emma rolled her eyes and looked away from them. They walked past her, but Will acted as though Emma wasn’t there.

“Hey!” Sabrina yelled, pointing a finger at him. “It’s that asshole from earlier! And the world’s dirtiest skank bitch ever! Emma, how do you know that guy?”

Emma didn’t want anyone to know about her relationship with Will. It was bad enough that she had lied about it for so long. Her friends would have to know eventually. But tonight, was not the right time for it. She looked right at him when she answered Sabrina.

“I don’t know him. I don’t know him at all,” she said hoping he heard her. If he did, he didn’t show it.

“Come on,” Alex said, putting his hand on Emma’s shoulder. “My car is right over there. I want to get Sabrina home.”

“Oh, you wanna take me home, huh?” Sabrina wiggled her eyebrows. “We’re gonna do some stuff? Hmm?”

 Alex actually blushed.

“Ooooh, look he’s blushing,” Sabrina teased. “We’re gonna do sexy things!”

“I just wanna get you home, and put you to bed.”

“You heard that, Emma? Alex wants to get me in bed!”

Emma laughed as Alex covered his face with his hands.

“Oh my God,” he grumbled in embarrassment.

“You know, I don’t think that’s what he meant,” Emma said leading Sabrina towards Alex’s car. Sabrina poured herself into the back seat, still screaming about how Alex was going to put her to bed.

“Is she always like this when she’s drunk?” he asked.

“Yup!” Emma laughed. “She doesn’t drink often, but when she does this is pretty much what you get. If you’re planning to stick around for a while, you’ll have to get used it.”

“Good to know,” he smirked. “Listen, I’m really sorry about tonight. Will is… I can’t say he’s a nice guy because he isn’t. But he’s not a bad person. There’s a lot of… Well anyway, I’m sorry.”

“You’re really sweet, Alex. Thank you. I’m glad you and Sabrina got together.”

“Let me give you a ride home,” he offered, holding the front seat door open.

“No, it’s okay. Just worry about getting her home. She’s a handful when she’s like this.”

“Are you sure? I can at least take you to the bus stop.”

“No, it’s fine I promise. I’m used to this. Thanks again. Take care of her.” Emma walked away and towards the bus stop across the street. She had already taken a cab and couldn’t afford another one. A long bus ride would give some time to reflect on the evening. She thought of the adorable apartment Will said was hers now, and how she could never live there. It was her dream home. A neat and cozy place she could relax in.

But her priorities were to ensure her father had a good recovery, and that her grades stayed up. Her comforts would have to wait. As they always had. She didn’t even get a chance to grab things from her dorm like she planned.

“I can grab them after class tomorrow,” she said to herself. Some of her mother’s old clothes were packed up in boxes in her father’s closet. She had been meaning to go through them and take what fit her. It had been over a long time since her mother was gone. It was time to let her go. It would be hard process, especially since she would have to do it alone. It would be more troublesome because she was sure that Jane and Anna would disturb her the whole time. Her mother had a gorgeous collection of jewelry that Emma hadn’t ever touched. She was sure Jane and Anna would try to steal it. She had to make sure it stayed will protected. Maybe she could hide the jewelry box at Jess or Sabrina’s apartments.

As she waited, she noticed a fancy sports car pull up by the bus stop. It was Will’s car. The windows were cracked and she could hear Will and Vivian inside. Vivian was yelling loudly. From the sounds of it, Will was attempting to pick up where he and Emma left off. Emma did her best to ignore them, but Vivian’s moans were too loud to ignore.

“Will,” she whimpered. “We should go somewhere. “I think someone is watching us.”

Will looked right up at Emma.

“Let them watch,” he said, his eyes locked with Emma’s as he began to unbutton Vivian’s blouse.
