Chapter 97

“I didn’t think this through well enough,” Grace said as she looked at her very flat belly. It was getting obvious that she wasn’t pregnant. That stupid nanny certainly seemed to suspect it. She had to make another plan. But what?
“Mrs. Stewart?” Minnie called.
“What?”
“Time for your prenatals. Not that it seems to you need them. Yours may be the best pregnancy I’ve ever tended to. I’ve never seen someone have it so easy.”
“Just give me them. Every pregnancy is different. Shouldn’t you know that?”
“I do. I also know what it looks like when someone isn’t pregnant… and is telling everyone she is. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to prepare dinner.”
Minnie walked off and Grace sneered at her.
“If only there were a way to solve my problem and knock that dumb bitch down a few pegs.” After mulling it over, Grace decided she’d have to feign a miscarriage. She thought about staging some kind of accident. Perhaps she would fall down the stairs or fall while walking in the garden. Those were quickly ruled out as they could get messy. She opted for something cleaner.
“Hello, may I speak to Dr. Leputian? Thank you.” she called her doctor’s office to arrange her plan. “Hello, doctor? Yes, It’s Grace Stewart. I’m calling about what we had talked about before. Yes, I’m ready to proceed. I’ve wired the payment per your instructions… Yes. It will be today… Exactly… Yes, thank you.”
“Dinner is almost ready, ma’am,” Minnie announced.
“I’m not feeling well, Minnie.”
Her eyes widened at that. Minnie?
“Is there something I can get you?”
“No. My stomach hurts. I think I will lay down for a while.”
“I’ll prepare some tea for you.”
Minnie was in the kitchen when she heard a scream and thud from upstairs. She ran up and saw Grace laying in on the floor, clutching her abdomen.
“What happened?” Minnie panicked.
“It hurts. It hurts so much.”
“I’ll call an ambulance!”
“Please hurry!”
Minnie called the ambulance and Grace was rushed to the hospital where Dr. Leputian was waiting.
“Call my husband!” Grace called as she was wheeled back by the doctor.
“Well damn,” Minnie shook her head when she was alone. “She’s better than I thought.”
Will flew to the hospital as soon as Minnie told him what was going on. Grace laid in a hospital bed; black tears stained her face from her ruined mascara.
“Will!” she cried. “I’m so sorry. I lost our baby!”
“Where is the doctor?” Will turned to find someone to speak to, but Grace stopped him.
“Please don’t go. I already spoke to him.”
“What happened? Did you get hurt?”
“No. It’s me. It’s my body. He said I’d have a hard time getting pregnant again, that it was miracle I got pregnant at all. He says it’s possible that I can’t have children,” she wailed.
“Can’t we talk to someone else about this?”
“You’re going to leave me now. I know you are.”
“Grace, I…” Will felt horrible. On one hand, he had gotten a little excited at the thought of having a baby. He didn’t like that it was with Grace, but it was still his child. On the other hand, he had only stopped actively trying to split up the marriage because of the pregnancy. But he couldn’t pick that up where they left off. Grace was going through something horrible right now. And he couldn’t bring her further down.
“Let’s adopt a baby,” Grace said.
“Adoption?”
“Yes. We were ready for a baby anyway. I need something to love! I need someone that actually wants to be loved by me!” Grace wept.
“You should get some rest. We don’t have to talk about this now. It’s been a traumatic day for you.”
“Okay. You aren’t leaving, are you?”
“No. I’m just going to get some air and I’ll be right back.”
What a mess, Will thought. Every step forward he took in his life made him feel more trapped. No matter what happened, he seemed to fall deeper and deeper into a life he didn’t want. It was retribution for the way he treated Emma, he often thought. They could have been happy together if he wasn’t such a shithead. He knew he should stop his search for her. If she had wanted him to find her, he would have by now. She was certainly off living her life somewhere. Probably with Spencer.
Perhaps he should suck it up and live his life with Grace. For so long that was what he wanted. She was the center of his universe, but now that she was back, he wanted nothing to do with her. Was he going to ruin another woman’s life with his selfishness? It was time to give up on what he wanted and try to make someone else happy for once. Maybe he would find his own happiness that way. Choosing Grace over Emma is what got him in this mess in the first place.
“You wanted her? You got her,” he mumbled to himself.
Adopting a baby is not something he was ready to do. He wasn’t ready to be a father, but clearly, he didn’t know what he wanted. As he paced outside, Minnie approached.
“Hello, Will.”
“Hi, Minnie. Thank you for being there for her today. Things could have been worse if you weren’t there.
“Just doing my job. There’s something I wanted to tell you…”
“What is it?”
Minnie opened her mouth to tell him her suspicions, Will couldn’t believe what he just heard.
Minnie saw the melancholy in his eye. Her heart broke for him.
“I enjoyed working for you, and I hope that you find your true love someday.”
“You’re leaving?”
“Take care of yourself, okay?” Minnie patted his shoulder and walked towards a cab that was waiting.
Will watched as the cab drove away and then looked back at the hospital. He had to make a decision. He had to move forward.
