Chapter 89
All of the lights in the house were dimmed when Will arrived. The hazy glow of amber candlelight flickered from the dining room. Will followed and was greeted by a gorgeous scene. A sumptuous and decadent dinner was laid out on the table. A bottle of his favorite wine was chilling in an ice bucket. Two glasses had already been poured. Soft violin music was playing in the background. Everything was bathed in the gentle golden shine of the candles. In the center, was Grace. She wore a flowing blush colored wrap dress. Her hair cascaded down in soft waves, just the way he had always loved. She was vision, and for a moment he was transported to a simpler time.
“This is really nice,” Will said, some of the ice inside him melting. “You look beautiful,” he commented.
“Thank you. Have dinner with me,” she gestured toward the table. Will pulled out a chair for Grace, and she floated down into it. He sat across from her. “Have some wine,” she said drinking from her own glass. Will sipped on the wine. It was delicious.
“Listen, I know this has been difficult, and I haven’t made it any easier with my expectations. And I’m sorry about that. I figured we could pick up right where we left off, but we’re different people.”
“Grace…”
“Please let me finish. If I don’t say this now, I’ll never be able to say it.” Will nodded for her to continue. “I hurt you. And I will never forgive myself for that. We may not be everything we were, but I hope we can rebuild something between us again. Remember…” she laughed. “Remember that one time we got lost in the woods during that one camping trip?”
“Yeah,” Will smiled without wanting to. “You were crying the whole time.”
“Excuse me,” she feigned offense. “I remember that quite differently. You were such a scaredy cat back then.”
“I was not,” Will laughed. “Okay, maybe a little. But still, that time you were the one that was scared. You were convinced that a witch was going to come and eat us.”
“I was eight,” Grace defended herself. “How about that time I had to save you from that bird that kept trying to attack you?”
“I had forgotten about that. You were like a Disney princess. That bird followed you around for days after that.”
They laughed and reminisced about their childhood. They did have a lot of history together. He may not be in love with her anymore, but he did love her once. She was very important to him. For a long time, she was the only light in his life. Maybe that was too much pressure to place on her. One person shouldn’t be someone’s only source of happiness.
“This was fun,” Will said. “Thank you for this. I’m going to bed.” Will stood up, and a strong dizzy spell hit him. The room wouldn’t stop spinning. He had only had half a glass of wine. He shouldn’t be drunk. His legs felt like jelly beneath him. He grabbed the back of the chair and used it to keep himself up.
“What’s wrong?” Grace said.
“Wine went to my head,” Will slurred.
“Let me help you,” she offered. Will tried to protest, but he didn’t have the strength. Grace led him to his bedroom. He didn’t remember walking in or getting in his bed. Nothing made sense. It felt as though he was trying to swim through sand.
“What’s happening?” he managed to ask.
“Shhhh,” Grace put a finger to his lips. She undid her dress, revealing black lingerie. She climbed on top of him and kissed him.
No, he thought.
She broke their kiss and started to unbutton his shirt.
“What… are you doing?” he asked. Grace caressed his face.
“I didn’t want it to be this way, but I had to do something to get into bed with you.”
“You… drugged me,” he realized.
“Don’t think of it that way. I just made it so that you’re more open to suggestion. I know you want me. I just need to remind you what we used to have.” She finished undoing his shirt and splayed her hands across his bare chest. “I always loved the way your skin felt against mine. The way my body molded itself to yours. Do you remember?” She grabbed his hand and put in her breast. “Touch me, Will. Feel me.”
“How could you do this… to me?” he wanted to yell at her, but his body still wasn’t his.
“You want this,” she grinded against him. “I know you do.”
“I don’t. Who even… are you? I don’t know you anymore. My Grace… wouldn’t do this.”
“You used to be obsessed with me,” she sneered, hurt by rejection. “We are married. So, this is what we’re supposed to do. If you won’t give it to me, I’ll have to take it.”
“This is crazy,” Will started to regain control of himself. “You realize what… you’re doing, don’t you?”
“You don’t know what I’ve been through! You are my last hope! And being your fake wife isn’t going to be enough. You’re going to get me pregnant. I don’t care how it happens.”
“Stop this,” he managed to push her off. “You’re not some random girl I picked up somewhere.”
“Exactly!” she screeched. “I am your wife!”
“And I told you going into this. I don’t love you, Grace. You’re still important to me, but those feelings for you have gone. Okay? Those feelings are gone. We will never be what we were. And after this, I’m not even sure we can be friends.”
“Will…”
“Get out.”
“Please…” she tried to climb in him again, but he pushed her off.
“I said get out! Get off of me and get the fuck out!”
She walked towards the door; her head hung in shame. Before she walked out, Will issued a warning.
“Don’t ever try that again,” his voice was low and dangerous, and it scared her. She got to her room and paced around for a few minutes. Rage took hold of her, and she slapped a lamp off a table. She couldn’t believe that Will rejected her like that. It used to be that he couldn’t get enough of her. No one could ever compare to Will in bed. He was passionate and wild, but she was the one who discovered that. She made Will into who he was. But he didn’t love her anymore. Someone else had his heart. And she was afraid that person may have it forever.
