Chapter 15: More Explanations

People looked at me with pure jealousy after Dax had left the store. They couldn’t believe that their shopping trips were over. Jason and Addison seemed absolutely stunned at what had just occurred.

Jason made his way over towards me, but I was done with dealing with anyone in that store. I needed to get out of there before anything else occurred. Even Addison looked ready to confront me for something that I didn’t do.

I walked out the door with my chauffeur following close behind me. He didn’t say anything to me and seemed unsurprised with his boss’ behavior.

Maybe nothing surprised any of his staff anymore. They were probably used to Dax spending his money extravagantly everywhere he went.

My chauffeur opened the door for me, and I climbed in carefully. I checked briefly to make sure no angry customers had followed us. I was just checking, as some of them looked extremely ticked off towards me.
The coast was clear and we drove off towards the mansion.

I became more and more at ease as the store became a dot in the distance. That whole trip had been a complete disaster and encouraged me to never do that again.

I pulled my phone out and checked how bad I looked. My massacre was completely streaked down my face, while my eyes looked so red and puffy.

All of those people had seen me cry in public. The increased hormones didn’t help my emotional state either; Addison just caused them to go over the edge. I couldn’t believe I had been made into such a fool.

Hopefully I would never see Addison or Jason ever again. They were just problems that my already complicated life didn’t need to add.

I tried to push the though of them away as the mansion loomed into view. It made me relieved to see the mansion again.

It was ironic that my shopping trip turned out worse than just staying trapped in the mansion. The world must’ve been trying to give me a sign.

After he parked, the chauffeur got out and opened my door. He had the most apologetic expression on his face.

His eyes looked into mine and he said, “I’m very sorry that I didn’t help you out back there. I wasn’t sure what to do.”

I brushed it off, “Don’t worry about it. You couldn’t have done much back there. It’s not the first time someone’s been rude to me.”

The man looked relieved and I walked into the mansion. Quickly I searched around for Dax but didn’t see him.

After that disastrous trip, I decided that I deserved some great food. I made my way towards the kitchen.

I sat down at the giant kitchen island. The chef normally was around but wasn’t there this time.

Shortly after, I found the chef reading a novel. I cleared my throat, despite feeling bad for interrupting his time off.

He looked up at me and asked, “Is there something you need Miss Winters?”

“I was wondering if you could fix me lunch?”

“It’s no problem.”

The chef got up and walked to the kitchen.

When we got the kitchen, he looked at me and asked, “Is there anything in particular that you want?”

“I’d like a grilled cheese sandwich.”

He nodded and got to work preparing the sandwich.

My mouth fell open once I saw the gourmet styled grilled cheese. It was on sourdough bread and toasted to a golden brown with a cheese that looked smooth and creamy.

“Thank you for making this.”

“No problem. It’s what I do,” the chef said in a cheerful tone.

I savored every bite of the cheesy goodness and then headed for my room.

It was time to finally clean up. I wasn’t going to stay looking the way I was. It was pitiful.

Something was off when I got to my room, however. The door was open, though I knew I hadn’t left it that way.

Fear crept into me while I pulled out my mace before entering the room slowly. I had it held up in case there was
some psycho in my room.

There was a woman I had never seen before standing near my dresser. I cautiously walked over towards her as she turned around.

Her hair was a dark brown and she had brown eyes the color of caramel. Her cheekbones that made me envious. Even her lips were really full and in a peach color lipstick.

The woman’s outfit was simple yet stylish. She had on a blue silk blouse paired with designer jeans and black flats.

Was everyone fashionable in Dax’s family? I couldn’t believe how they all seemed like they came right off the runway. It was unbelievable.

She spoke up and said, “Please don’t be alarmed. It was never my intention to scare you. Please excuse me for barging into your room unannounced.”

I carefully asked, “Who are you?”

The woman smiled and told me, “I’m Wendy. My husband is Jared, and Dax is my brother-in-law.”

Jared didn’t mention he was married. He had flirted with me. I couldn’t believe the nerve of him doing that when he had a wife. It was so wrong and made me feel disgusted.

I wondered if Wendy knew the truth. I knew it was none of my business if Jared wasn’t faithful to his wife. This was something that I had to keep to myself. It was better to not get involved.

Soon I told her, “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Danica Winters.”

Wendy smiled and said, “I’ve been wanting to meet you since I heard about you.” She added, “I can’t believe Dax actually found you though. He was being so particular.”

“I feel so flattered to hear that.” I added, “Yes, he sure was but now I’m here.”

She nodded her head in agreement and got closer to me. “So, what kind of work were you in before?”

“I was a waitress.”

Wendy kept up her friendly manner and said, “That’s great. I admire women who can work in that
industry.”

Was this woman for real? She seemed nice, but almost too nice. It made me a little wary about her. I wondered if she was faking being kind towards me because of who I was.

I would just have to play along with her friendly act and hope it was genuine. No women like her had been kind towards me before. Something was different about Wendy.

When I answered, I asked, “So what do you do?”

Her face lit up at the question before she said, “I’m a model and fashion designer.”

This woman made me feel so unaccomplished. Plus, she had a handsome husband on top of all of that. But he may not have been loyal to her, I reminded myself.

“That’s so impressive. I’m sure that keeps you busy.”

“Yes, it does. Along with the two children we have.”

There was a pause in the conversation. Truthfully, I was running out of things to say and still wanted to get cleaned up. I probably looked like a zombie compared to how presentable she was.

Suddenly Wendy said, “I should tell you something that Dax may have failed to mention to you.”

“What exactly didn’t he tell me?”

“Did you know that Dax actually needs a child to secure his place in the company? My father-in-law had Dax and Jared sign a formal agreement.

“I knew that Dax needs an heir before he’s thirty, but didn’t know the details of the arrangement.”

Why had Dax failed to tell me the whole truth? I thought he had already revealed everything to me. It hurt to know there was more he hadn’t shared with me. Maybe Dax didn’t trust me as much as I had thought.

“There’s more. If he fails to have an heir, then the company will go to Jared and our children.”
