Chapter 27: Who Was It?
Dax POV
When I woke up, Danica was still sleeping. I didn’t want to disturb her and left without trying to make too much noise. She needed all the rest that she could get, and I didn’t want her to feel sick anymore.
While she was sleeping, I thought she looked so innocent and angelic. I took a risk and leaned in to give her forehead a kiss.
Danica smiled in her sleep after my chaste kiss. I allowed myself to smile at seeing her look so peaceful in her sleep. I didn’t want to stick around until she woke up and started to head back to my room.
There was no point in lingering around in her room. I wouldn’t get anything solved by looking at her.
When I got back to my room, I picked out a quick set of casual clothes. Then I styled my hair, even though I wasn’t going to work for the day. I always wanted to look presentable in case anyone important dropped by the house.
After I left my room, I knew what I had to do. The culprit was out on the loose. I wouldn’t let them get away with doing this. Someone was going to pay for poisoning Danica.
Who could have done it though? I tried to think of a list of possible suspects that may have been out for my position or had a personal vendetta against me.
I wondered how I could’ve let someone so dangerous get past security. I thought I had one of the best security systems owned.
I was angry just thinking about someone poisoning Danica under my nose. I vowed to find them and make them regret what they did. I hoped that they could get some jail time, as it was attempted murder.
A sudden realization hit me. The poison must’ve been meant for me but got sent to the wrong room. Danica was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Someone was trying to get rid of me.
I felt terrible that Danica had gotten caught up in this terrible situation. She hadn’t deserved for that to have happened to her. I wanted to make it up to her after I figured out who was behind the despicable act. Hopefully it
wouldn’t take long to solve this.
I would keep an eye out for anyone suspicious within the mansion from now on. I was positive that a spy had been sent here and was working for one of my competitors. My guard wouldn’t be let down until I knew the culprit was discovered.
I quickly went down to my office and made a call to upgrade my security system.
Now I had to take care of other security measures. I needed to hire another few guards and have someone with Danica at all times.
As I approached one guard, he seemed surprised to see me. I told him, “Be sure to be extra vigilant for any suspicious behavior around here. Don’t trust anyone but me.”
He nodded his head in acknowledgment, and I made a call.
Within the next half hour, more guards came into the mansion and secured all the entrances and outside perimeter. I didn’t think I was going overboard, as we didn’t need another security breach.
What else did I need to do? I had to do everything I could to keep Danica safe. Maybe I should try to stay by her side throughout the next twenty-four hours.
After I got to her room, I saw that she was awake. She looked up at me with a small smile.
I asked, “Do you need anything?”
Danica thought for a moment before she said, “If it isn’t too much to ask, what about some breakfast?”
“Sure. I’ll be right back.”
I got her a simple breakfast of toast and eggs and set it on a tray before taking it up to her.
When I got back, she said, “Thanks for doing this.”
I looked at her and asked, “Is there anything else you need?”
“Not really.” She added, “But has that guard outside my door always been there?”
I shook my head and said, “I needed to tighten security after what happened. I’m so sorry that this happened at all.”
“You don’t have to apologize. It wasn’t your fault. Don’t blame yourself.”
“I’ll try not to, but it is my fault. My security around here wasn’t as good as I thought.”
“Dax, don’t worry. I’m okay now. I don’t want you to feel guilty over this.”
I looked into her eyes and said, “If you’re really ok, I’ll try to forgive myself for failing you.”
I walked away before she could say anything else.
It dawned on me what I still had to do. I could let the police know what had happened. It had been an attempted murder with the poison, and the doctor could confirm it.
I made a call, and a couple officers came over immediately.
We made the interrogations happen in the living room, so I could witness what was said. Besides, the guards were told to not let anyone leave during the duration of these.
One particular interrogation was the breakthrough. My maid looked very nervous sitting on the chair and was looking away from the officers.
The one officer asked, “Where were you on the evening of the fourteenth?”
The maid didn’t say anything and looked over at me. I stared daggers at her.
Why was she holding up the interrogation? I felt as if she was hiding something.
He asked, “Are you going to just sit there or answer the question miss?”
She avoided eye contact and said, “Uh…I was cleaning Mr. Ryan’s room.”
I knew she was lying, as I was in my room the whole time and didn’t see her. I gave her a sharp look and tried to pressure her to tell the truth.
The maid started sweating and said, “Okay. I lied.”
“Tell us where you really were. We don’t like to be deceived.”
She swallowed and said, “Okay. It was me. I poisoned Danica.” She added, “I did it on behalf of another CEO. He
paid me more than I could refuse. I really need the money.”
She started to sob. The officers turned to me and said, “That’s all we need to know. We can book her.”
They told her the usual spiel, and she was escorted out of my house in handcuffs.
