Chapter 49: Proposal Interrupted

Dax POV

It was so hard to believe that my own sister-in-law would stoop so low for Jared. In the past, I had never cared for Wendy that much. There was something about her that felt off at times.

At least she would never be able to return to my home. I would have to ban Jared from coming back. There was no way that I could trust him ever again either. He may have been behind Wendy’s actions. It was if I couldn’t trust anyone these days.

I definitely couldn’t let my guard down quite yet. Things had been quite dangerous. I’d make sure to keep Danica safe for the remainder of her time with me. Almost losing her made me value her even more than I used to.

A little after Wendy left, I wanted to offer Danica some comfort after that close call. I had seen that she had gone up to her room and headed there myself.

I knocked on her door and she let me in. Danica was lying on her bed, and I looked at her.

“Would you like some company? I understand if you want to be alone for awhile.”

“Sure. I'd like that.”

I got on the bed and embraced her securely. She gave a pleased sigh. Her scent was always calming to me. It was a mix of something fruity and sweet. I would never get tired of being around her.

As I was comforting Danica, I realized something. I couldn’t imagine living without Danica by my side. No one else could come close to her.

She was the woman who I had really fallen for. I had never felt so strongly about any woman as I did for her. I knew I could give her the life she deserved. There would never be a day where she’d have to struggle again.

I wanted her to be happy and have an easier life. She had been through so much that it was time for her to get a complete fresh start.

That’s when a plan came to me. I excused myself, “I’ve got an errand to do, but I’ll be back later.”

Danica nodded in acknowledgment. I reluctantly let her go and walked out of the room.

I went to the best-known jeweler’s store and bought an eighteen-carat diamond engagement ring that was in an
octagon cut. It had to be the perfect ring for her to say yes. I knew it was the right ring for her when I spotted it on display.

As I drove back home, I thought about where I should take her to propose. I had to go all out with it and really sweep her off her feet. I would make it the most memorable proposal, so Danica wouldn’t ever forget it.

There were so many options to choose from. I needed to figure out something that was quite romantic.

When I returned back to the mansion, Danica was sitting in the living room. I came over to her and sat down near her. She smiled and asked, “How did your errand go?”

“It was good.” I added, “I was wondering if you had any plans this evening?”

Danica thought for a few seconds before saying, “I don’t have any. Why do you ask?”

I tried to sound too excited and said, “I wanted to take you out somewhere today.”

“Okay. Just let me get ready.”

Danica POV

I headed back downstairs after getting ready and wondered where Dax was taking me. He didn’t tell me specifically, but it had to be somewhere really nice.

I was kind of nervous and excited at the same time. Every time I was with Dax, I felt sparks with him and couldn’t get my heart to calm down.

We got into the car and started making our way to the mystery location. I glanced over at him and my breath caught while looking at him. He had become more handsome than usual, if that was possible. I couldn't believe
that I had Dax all to myself.

I hadn’t known things would end up like this at the beginning. Thankfully, I didn’t back out all those months ago. I was glad that I had stayed for this position after all.

When we got to our destination, my mouth dropped open. It was a seaside restaurant with a beautiful view of the ocean and the gentle waves were crashing against the shore.

We were led to a table on the outdoor deck area. I had never been in a restaurant like this before. It was a very peaceful atmosphere. I felt like I was by the ocean as a gentle breeze came through.

When the waiter left, Dax gave a huge smile to me. “Was this what you expected?”

“I had no idea this was where you were taking me. This is one of the most beautiful sights I’ve seen.”

He grinned more and said, “I’m glad you like it so much. I picked it out since I thought you’d enjoy it.”

I beamed at him and said, “Yeah, I really do. Thanks for taking me here.”

“It’s my pleasure. I will take you wherever your heart desires.”

My heart fluttered at his words. He was being very romantic towards me. I wasn’t sure of his intentions tonight but knew I could handle it. My heart was ready to fully accept Dax. I wouldn’t hold back from him ever again.

The waiter came back with our food before I could respond. I looked at my shrimp pasta that was covered in a light garlic butter.

Before I took a bite, I answered Dax, “Do you really mean that?”

“Yes. I mean every word. In fact…” Dax started to grab something from his pocket.

He almost had the item from his pocket, but that’s when I felt the bottom of my dress dampen. My water had broken. I spoke up quickly, “Dax, it’s time. We’ve got to find a hospital.”

Dax gave an alarmed look towards me and quickly left money to cover the bill and tip. Then he took my hand and led me out of the restaurant and to the car.

Dax drove really fast towards the nearest hospital as I kept having more frequent contractions.
