Chapter 34: Frosty Silence

The following day I started to avoid Dax again. I just couldn’t handle another lecture or more words about his precious heir. Why was Dax the most irritating person on the planet?

I couldn’t believe he had said those things to me. Then he dared to bring up how he wanted an heir for the company so desperately. What was wrong with him? His company meant more than anything else.

Why couldn’t he care about my personal well-being just for me? I knew it was selfish to think that way, but he was starting to make me want to quit. However, I knew I was stuck with this position until the baby was born.

I pushed thoughts of the day before away and wanted to move on. He didn’t need to make me in a sour mood yet again. I was going to have a better day and not talk to him at all.

After I came downstairs, I noticed he was in the kitchen. I waited until he walked to his office and decided to have a good breakfast.

I ate my breakfast while checking to make sure that Dax wouldn’t come back. If he was smart, he’d keep his distance from me. I couldn’t deal with him for the duration of the day.

He really thought he was in charge of me. Ugh. Dax needed to stay out of my business as I did for him.

Just as I was finishing breakfast, Dax walked in. He avoided any eye contact and was silent as he made coffee. He looked very grumpy already while his hair was a little bit messed up.

I didn’t even try to ask him what was wrong. It was better for us to avoid each other like this. Less attachment was better. I wasn’t going to stay with him forever in the mansion anyway. We needed to get more distance between us.

Maybe I needed to get out of the mansion again. I knew Dax was going to leave for work soon but would come back at lunch. He actually was coming back at lunch, as I had heard he was working from home the rest of the day.

I wasn’t sure why but didn’t bother to ask. I noticed he still hadn’t left with his coffee yet. Not wanting to wait until he left, I got up and walked out first.

Hopefully he wouldn’t follow me. I remembered how he had grabbed my wrist the day before. I didn’t want to have a confrontation with him again. It would just worsen my mood.

I decided to leave and headed for the door. As I was a few feet from the door, Wendy came in. This time she wore a beautiful backless red dress that complimented her dark hair and figure.

I had no idea she was planning on visiting. Now I had to stay there and see what she wanted. It’d be rude to leave with a guest here.

Besides, what if she had come to see me? I couldn’t leave her like that. I mean, Dax was going to leave very soon and give me the house to myself. There wasn’t a good reason to leave until later.

Wendy came over to me and said, “I’m glad you’re here. I’ve been meaning to visit you again. It feels like I haven’t seen you in a while.”

It was nice to know that she was here to see me, though it surprised me. I thought she’d want to see Dax. We weren’t relatives, so I wasn’t sure why she needed to see me. But maybe she thought we were friends. I hadn’t explicitly told her that we were or weren’t friends.

I happened to notice Dax leaving a few minutes later. He had fixed his hair before heading out. Not that I cared about how he looked. He could go out however he wanted to look like. We weren’t even on speaking terms for me to have any worry about him.

Wendy must’ve sensed that something was up and asked, “What’s wrong, Danica? Is something bothering you?”

I sighed and said, “It’s your brother-in-law. He really upset me yesterday. I still can’t believe the nerve of that man.”

Wendy shook her head in disappointment and asked, “What did he say?”

“He told me that I couldn’t meet up with other men and was endangering the baby. Then he mentioned about how important this baby is.” I added, “But he didn’t care about my actual safety.”

Wendy frowned and said, “I can’t believe he said those things to you. That isn’t his usual behavior. He’s not normally so controlling.”

“Yeah, it was pretty awful. I just don’t know how to keep dealing with him. Sometimes, I think I can’t do this anymore.”

Wendy’s face lit up and she said, “I know what you should do. It just came to me now.” She added, “But it’s just one option and you don’t have to do this.”

I was intrigued to know what she meant. Maybe her idea would be a good one that I needed to hear.
“What would that be?”

“You should run away and teach him a lesson. I’ll even help you to escape, and you can get a new life somewhere else. I can make it possible to go anywhere that you want."
