Chapter 28: Romantic Getaway

I was eating breakfast when Dax came over and sat beside me. He looked at me and asked, “Would you like to get away from here for a few days?”

This was so sudden, I wasn’t sure what to say right away. Where was he planning on taking me? Would we be alone? Maybe that wasn’t the best idea. I had just started to be around him again recently.

My heart couldn’t handle any more of his hot and cold behavior. I wasn’t going to give him endless chances. I knew Dax had some good characteristics, but were they enough to convince me to go on a trip with him?

After a few seconds passed, I answered, “It depends on where we’re going.”

Dax had an amused expression and told me, “You’ll like it. Please say yes. I’ll have one of the maids pack your suitcase.”

Maybe it would be nice to get away. Plus, I had leftover anxiety from staying in the mansion. A break could be good for me.

“Okay. Let’s go. When are we leaving?”

“Today.”

“That soon?”

“Yes, it’s no problem for me.”

I finished eating and stayed where I was. Dax headed upstairs and quickly came back down with a suitcase.

I was starting to look forward to getting away. I’d bet Dax was planning on taking me somewhere beautiful and luxurious. He never took me to any ordinary places in the time we had known each other.

I followed him out to his car, where he put my suitcase in himself. Then he came to the passenger side door and opened it before helping me get in. He even buckled me in carefully.

Dax walked back to his side and got in before starting it and driving off. He took us to the airport, where he owned a private hangar. Next thing I knew, we got out and Dax led me to a jet.

It was very huge and looked quite expensive. I should’ve known he had a private jet.

There was a lot of space inside to walk around, and they were the comfiest seats I had ever been in.

He looked over at me and asked, “Are you getting excited?”

“Yeah I am. I’ve never on a plane before.”

Dax looked at me incredulously, “Wow. I can’t believe this is your first flight.” He added, “Don’t worry. It isn’t that bad, and you should chew gum to help keep your ears from popping.”

Dax's words reassured me and made me feel better. He handed me a stick of gum and we took off. It was going to be a long flight, but I was glad that Dax was there to keep me company.

After our flight landed, Dax led me to where we would be staying. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Dax had taken me to a resort that looked pricy.

Dax said, “I hope you like the island of Kauai. This is actually the second time I’ve been to Hawaii, but I was on Maui last time.”

“Thank you so much. I’ve always wanted to come here but never imagined I’d actually be able to go."

I hugged Dax gently, which caught him off guard.

After we got our things settled into our separate rooms, Dax looked at me. “What would you like to do first?”

“I’m hungry. Do you think we could have an early dinner?”

“Sure.”

Dax researched a few different places to eat and pointed out one in particular to me. He said, “This looks like something you would like. What do you think?”

I looked at the picture of the restaurant, and it looked like a nice burger place. Of course, seafood was still on the menu as it was near the water. I was surprised that Dax actually was going to take me to a simple place but was relieved.

Dax got something out of his suitcase and said, “Could you please wear this to dinner?”

It was a cute dress with Hawaiian flowers on it. I really liked it.

“Sure. It is just my style.”

“Glad you do.”

I went to change and came back. I turned around slowly and asked, “What do you think?”

Dax smiled and said, “It looks really beautiful on you and compliments your eyes.”

I blushed and told him, “Thank you. You look quite handsome in your shirt too.”

He was in a blue button down shirt with the sleeves pushed up.

“Thank you. Shall we get going?”

I nodded my head and let him lead the way. We had to get a rental car to get to the restaurant.

When we got there, I immediately noticed the restaurant’s relaxed feel. I felt like I would fit in a lot better than where he’d taken me for lunch before.

Dax said, “It looks very casual here.”

When we got in, the hostess led us to a table that gave off a great ocean view. The water shimmered and had gentle waves crashed against the shore. There were still plenty of boats out on the water.

When we were left alone, Dax was gazing at me intensely. My heart was hammering loudly inside my chest.
Why was he looking at me this way? I had never seen him looking at me like this before.

“Danica, I’m really glad I’m here with you.”

“Why’s that?” I asked cautiously.

Dax smiled and said, “I enjoy being around you. I never know what to expect.”

“Thanks. You aren’t so bad yourself.”

The waiter came back and got our orders.

Dax ordered the surf and turf while I got a classic hamburger and fries. I had such a strong craving for the salty fries.

I asked, “Why did you invite me on this trip, Dax?”

He seemed taken aback and said, “I just wanted to make it up to you for what happened. That was terrible. I was so sc…”

Dax quit talking and I asked, “You were concerned for me?”

He shook his head yes and admitted, “I was so scared that you wouldn’t recover. I didn’t want to lose you.”

Wow. His words made my heart flutter, and my heartrate sped up. He really cared about me. I didn’t know he was so affected by my illness.

“Thank you for your concern. It means a lot to know you felt that way.” I added, “I also wanted to thank you for caring for me when I was recovering.”

“You’re welcome. I just wanted to help you get better.”

As we ate, I felt myself growing closer and closer to Dax. He was acting quite differently away from the mansion, which I liked.

After dinner, Dax took me to some of the local shops. I really wanted a souvenir of my time here. Who knew if I ever would come back?

In one shop, Dax tried on a funny tiki mask. I had no idea he had such a silly side.

I said, “You’ve got to buy that. It’s really goofy but cute on you.”

Oh no. What had I just said? I didn’t mean to say “cute.” Maybe he hadn’t been paying attention and missed what
I said.

He took off the mask and asked, “Did you really call me cute?”

I shook my head, “You’re just hearing things. It was nothing.”

Suddenly Dax picked up a pretty bracelet and said, “I think this should be yours. It really suits you.”

“You really think so?”

He nodded his head and got in line. I saw a magnet of a surfer and decided to buy it for Dax. It wasn’t a whole lot of money.

After we were done shopping, we went back to the resort. There was music playing in the lounge area. We saw a few couples dancing.

Dax drew me near him and put his arms around me. A slow song was playing and we were swaying back and forth softly with the music.

My heart was beating really fast as he kept his hands on me when the song finished. Dax gave me a heated gaze that sent a warmth throughout me.

Dax slowly moved closer and pressed his lips against mine. At first, I hesitated but then started to kiss him back. Dax’s hands moved down to my waist as he continued to give me a gentle kiss.

He parted me from me a few seconds later and smiled. I smiled back at him, and we went back to dancing. I never wanted us to stop dancing, because I had never wanted someone’s touch as much as Dax’s.
