Chapter 26: Unknown Sickness

Dax POV

My heart sunk at seeing Danica unconscious. I immediately got her off the floor and carefully put her back into her bed.

I had no idea that she had gotten sick again. It was surprising that she had even come to me for help. But I’d never let her be ignored even if I was mad.

I immediately summoned my private physician to look her over. He began tending to her mysterious illness as best as he could, but I knew that he may not be enough.

She wouldn’t have just come for help if this wasn’t serious. I knew it wasn’t just her morning sickness like before. Danica was incredibly pale and was barely able to get to me.

I continued to check on her throughout the day, and it seemed she was getting even weaker. Her breathing wasn’t very regular either; it seemed as if her body wanted to give up and couldn’t fight the illness.

What was she going through? This was so nerve wracking to watch. I didn’t want her to get any sicker. The baby was being affected greatly by this illness too. I couldn’t let her be sick too long or another risk was present. I wasn’t losing Danica or the child. I needed to do something more drastic and serious.

She was totally fine when I had last seen her. I had to get to the bottom of this before she kept deteriorating. I wouldn’t lose her.

I started to make some calls to the world-renowned doctors that I knew. They would be able to help, as they had knowledge that I greatly lacked.

They came immediately and each tried to figure out what was wrong. As one doctor came, he seemed absolutely shocked and whispered something to his nurse he brought with him.

I got more nervous from seeing them look like that. She had to get better, or I don’t know what I’d do. I had grown very attached to Danica, and she deserved a long life.

What if they couldn’t save her? I wouldn’t be able to handle that. She had to make it through this. I knew Danica was tough and a fighter.

I wondered what had been said, as the nurse gave a terrible look of horror. What was wrong with Danica?

The doctor came over to me and said, “I've got some unsettling news. Danica has been poisoned.”

“That’s impossible. I have the best security in the whole area.”

“I’m afraid it is.”

“Is there a way to rid her of the poison quickly?”

“Don’t worry. I have just the right medicine to do the trick. It’s good that we discovered this early on.” The doctor motioned for me to leave and I did.

I was extremely worried as I waited for her to wake up. I missed her voice and being able to argue with her.

The only question remained. Who had done such a thing to her?

I couldn’t worry about it yet but would after she recovered enough. I had to keep my guard up from now on. Apparently, my security had failed me.

My heart skipped a beat on the day she finally woke up. She weakly opened her eyes but didn’t stay awake long enough to talk. I felt as if I needed to stay with her and hold her hand. I also wanted to care for her and make sure she kept improving.

I owed her this because it was my fault that she had ended up this way. If she hadn’t taken the position, no one would’ve tried to poison her.

The waiting game wasn’t great. My stress had heightened as she slowly was beginning to improve.

Eventually, Danica became aware of her surroundings and was surprised to see me that day. I had told all of my servants to not tend to her, as I would do it myself. Some of them were shocked beyond measure.

I had been bringing her food and keeping her company. She seemed to enjoy my company and hadn’t tried to kick me out yet.

The one day I had brought her lunch was one to remember. I set her food tray down on her nightstand and watched as she ate. I sat in her desk chair to give her space.

Danica still looked so weak, tired and maybe a little scared as I saw her glance around the room anxiously. I was sure she didn’t feel as safe after having been poisoned. The doctor told her what had happened after she woke up.

She was so horrified after hearing the news that I tried to give her calming back rubs. I hated to see her being so scared in a place that had been safe before.

I went back to the present and looked over at her. She was staring in my direction. Immediately, I went to stand by her side.

“Dax, could you hold me?”

Her words caught me off guard. She had never asked me to do this before.

I wondered how she felt when she was in my arms. Danica was really an amazing woman. No other woman had stirred uncertain feelings inside me like this. I wanted to hold her so badly.

Was it really okay with her? I hesitated briefly before climbing into her bed. I was actually nervous to be with her so intimately.

I carefully wrapped my arms around her, securing her in my embrace. She felt cold which made me want to stay with her until she was all warmed up.

After a little bit, she turned towards me and wrapped her arms around me. I rewrapped my arms around her and suddenly felt sleepy. I gazed at Danica’s beautiful face until I couldn’t stay awake any longer and fell asleep entwined with her.
