Chapter 16: Feeling Sick

After my talk with Wendy, I still worried about Dax. There was a chance he could lose the company to his younger brother. That made sense but was unfortunate to think about.

From what I could tell, Dax was a great CEO. He was always so hard working and made sure to do work even while he was home. I knew he had the office in the mansion to complete additional work even off duty.

Why had she decided to tell me this news? It just made me want to have the baby faster, so his job would be secure.

The rest of the day passed by quickly, and it had gotten quite late. I checked the clock and it was already around 11:00. It was best to sleep and not have any further thoughts of worry clouding my head.

It was hard to fall asleep, so I got out of bed. I put on my robe before quietly making my way downstairs. I doubted anyone else would be up still but felt better having something to cover myself up with.

I was shocked to find Dax sitting at the table when I made it to the kitchen. He was in red long silk pajamas with no slippers on.

It caught me off guard seeing him like this. What was he doing up still? I knew he had long days at work. He should’ve been sleeping by now.

Dax motioned for me to come over to him and I did.

After I sat down next to him, he asked, “You can’t sleep either?”

I shook my head and said, “Yeah, I have a lot on my mind.”

He nodded his head in understanding and added, “I can help you get back to sleep. I know of a trick.”

I wasn’t sure whether I should believe him. He seemed sincere but how could I truly know?

“Do you really or are you making this up? I don’t like being fooled.”

“I’m not making this up. This is a real trick,” Dax told me in an honest way.

I sat there as he got up and went to go make something. He motioned for me to close my eyes and said, “Keep them closed until I say to open them.”

“How can I trust you not to try any funny business?”

“I swear I won’t do anything. You can trust me. I just want you surprised at what I’m making for you.”

I closed my eyes slowly and waited patiently. Putting trust in Dax was still not easy, but I had to start somewhere.

It drove me crazy to not know what he was up to. I was tempted to peek a couple times but resisted somehow. I would keep my word to do what he told me this one time.

Finally, he told me, “You can open your eyes. It’s done.”

I opened my eyes and smelled a sweet, almost apple-like scent drifting from the cup.

Dax kept his eyes on me while I drank the mystery liquid. I got the taste of something earthy with a hint of an apple flavor.

“What is this?”

Dax answered, “It’s chamomile tea. It can help you get to sleep.”

He made some for himself before joining me at the table again. We drank in silence but it didn’t feel uncomfortable.

After we were done, he took my cup and put it into the sink.

I said, “Thank you for the tea.”

“You’re welcome. I hope you can get to sleep now Danica.”

“I hope you can sleep better too. Good night Dax.”

“Good night.”

I walked back up to my room with a big smile on my face. We had shared another good moment with each other by accident.

I was glad I was having trouble sleeping after all. It paid off in the end. I had never expected Dax to have helped me out like that. It was so sweet of him to do.

After I got back to my room, I went back to my bed and crawled in underneath the covers. It didn’t take as long until my eyes got heavy with sleep and they shut.

The following morning, I felt a huge wave of nausea come over me. I sprinted to the bathroom and opened the lid of the toilet up quickly. I threw up and didn’t stop for who what felt like ages. It was absolutely terrible being so sick. As soon as I thought it was over, I started again.

I had never been this sick before. It seemed extreme compared to other times I had been nauseous. I knew that the effects from pregnancy got worse further along, but this seemed too drastic.

Not being able to leave the bathroom also put a downer on my day. Nobody wanted to be held up like I was. I didn’t even attempt to try to leave the bathroom. It was too risky, as my nauseous feeling stayed with me for a while.

How had my day started out like this? It was unbelievable how unlucky I was.

For a brief time, it seemed that I was a little better so I went downstairs. I was about to go to the kitchen, hoping that I could handle a few measly crackers. I wanted to be able to eat something. Another wave of nausea
suddenly hit when I reached the living room. I tried to fight it off but got sick again.

The maid saw what had happened and got another one of the staff to help get me back to my room.

I felt bad she had to clean up that mess, but I couldn’t stop my nausea. It seemed as if it was getting worse.

When I got back to my room, a staff member tried to give me morning sickness soft chews. I was given a glass of water and took a couple of them.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t even hold them down and ran to the bathroom shortly after.

The staff were getting concerned at my level of sickness. There was no sign that it would go away for the day.
More than just my stomach was bothering me. My whole body felt off kilter. I had never been this messed up before.

I probably needed a doctor but didn’t even know the number for a hospital. I would just have to deal with this on my own.

I was also incredibly dehydrated, because I couldn’t keep any liquids down. I wanted to be able to get better, but it was not looking great for me.

A lightheadedness suddenly came over to me. The room felt like it was starting to spin very fast.

I wanted to try to go to my bed and maybe rest. Could it all disappear with some sleep? I wasn’t sure but was desperate to stop being so ill.

Carefully, I started to make my way to the bed. It was difficult to do as the room kept feeling like it was moving.

Suddenly, I started to fall backwards and felt the arms of someone strong wrap around me. I glanced up to see Dax’s concerned face staring down at me before everything faded away.
