Chapter 48: It Was You!

Danica POV

As the next few days went by, things started to get back to normal. Each day I got less and less anxious. Dax made sure to be around as much as possible and was trying to do some work at home. I was shocked that he had given up being at the office for me.

He was really showing off how much he cared for me. I knew he was still feeling terrible that I had been kidnapped. It was easy to see on his face when he thought that I wasn’t looking. Part of me wanted to tell him that it wasn’t his fault.

No one could’ve prevented that from happening. I didn’t want anyone to feel guilt for that. I would try to reassure him as the days went by.

The first day back, I had been more nervous than usual. Dax helped a lot that day to calm me down. He made sure to stay around me for most of the day. At one point, he made me popcorn and cuddled me on the couch. I knew he disliked seeing me suffer like that.

I was glad to have been back to routine at the mansion after my experience. As much as I was enjoying resting at the mansion; I had to get back out there. I couldn’t avoid going anywhere again because of what happened.

It was time to venture out again. But this time I would have the chauffeur stay by my side. Dax said it would be better not to take any chances. He wasn’t going to let me get into such a dangerous situation ever again.

I walked towards the door and stopped before I opened it. Something felt as if it was missing. That’s when I realized I didn’t have my purse on me.

I went back up to my room and hurried as much as I could try. It was lucky that I had remembered to get my purse before I left without it.

When I entered my room, I noticed something strange. Wendy was bent over a glass at the side of my bed and held a small vial in her hand. She was too busy to see that I had come into the room.

My mouth dropped open in shock. With absolute horror, I realized Wendy had poisoned me. I always knew there was something wrong about her. Now it all made sense why I had never fully trusted her.

She was just as horrible as her husband was. They were a perfect match for each other and deserved each other. That maid had been innocent and got taken away for Wendy’s benefit. Wendy was despicable, but hid it well.

That’s when Wendy turned around and noticed me. “Danica, this isn’t what it looks like. I was just adding immunity boosters to your drink.”

I couldn’t believe she was trying to save herself. It was easy to see past her pathetic excuse. It was too late for her to make an innocent plea.

“Don’t lie to me. I know you’re covering up what you really did. Among other things.”

Wendy gave a fake look of innocence, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She added, “Are you feeling okay, Danica?”

Was she serious? She had the nerve to pretend she didn’t know anything. I wanted to use force and get her to tell the truth but knew that wasn’t the way to go. I needed her to confess on her own.

“You know exactly what I’m talking about. Don’t act innocent.” I got near her and narrowed my eyes, “I know what you did to me.”

Wendy tried to make a run for it and bumped into Dax. He gave a curious glance towards her. Wendy looked nervous as Dax kept his focus on her. There was no way she was getting away without being proven guilty.

I called her out, “Wendy was the one who poisoned me. The maid was a false confession.”

Wendy looked up at Dax and said, “Danica is lying to you. I would never do that to her or anyone. That would be horrible. I’m not that kind of person. You’ve got to believe me.”

I hoped that Dax would take my side and not hers. They may have been family, but I wanted him to believe me
over her. Surely, he could see right through her evident lies.

Dax had a look of understanding pass over his face. He gave a murderous look towards Wendy and glanced at me before turning back to her.

He must’ve realized that Wendy wanted me out of the way. She was trying to help Jared become leader of the company and was willing to murder me.

Dax looked Wendy in the eye and demanded, “Tell me the truth and don’t make up any more lies.”

She swallowed nervously and said, “Fine. I poisoned her." She added, “I never expected that Danica would be here today. You ruined everything.”

“Is there anything else you need to confess? I would do it now.” Dax harshly added, “You shouldn’t keep secrets from family.”

Wendy looked back at me and then at Dax. “I let Jason into the house that night. He didn’t need payment and did it willingly. All I did was leave the back door open.”

“You’re a disgrace to the Ryan name. Get out of my house and never return. I don’t want to see you again,” Dax angrily stated.

Wendy left the house with her head hung low and had tears rolling down her face.
