Chapter 11 Be Careful, She’s Human
Colin's POV:
When I received Kevin Brown's call, I was at home; his laughter came through the phone. "Alpha Colin, your wife just pawned the jewelry of your Rock pack at my shop. Were you aware of that?"
I kept silent, but even through the phone, it seemed Kevin could guess my expression.
"Alpha Colin," Kevin cleared his throat, "don't you have anything to say?"
"What's there to say?" I spoke with a tone that was almost a laugh, "The items I gave her are hers to do with as she pleases."
"But those pieces of jewelry, were the gift from your mother, when you inherited the title of Alpha Colin!"
I said nothing and added more weight to the dumbbell I was lifting. As I raised it, my muscles tensed tightly, "How much did she sell the bracelet for?"
"Well…" Kevin chuckled, "she didn't sell it!"
That information caused me to furrow my brows, in confusion. Since last night, I had noticed the woman was restless, her gaze kept flicking towards the drawer, and I had suspected she might sell the jewelry.
After all, the $300,000 compensation was embezzled by Hailey, and she was desperate to pay for medical bills—where else would she get that kind of money if not from selling the jewelry?
But what I didn't anticipate was that she would come out of the jewelry store with the bracelet untouched.
"Alpha Colin, it so happened that I was there and I recognized the bracelet the moment she took it out. I thought a thief had stolen it from you, but to my surprise, it was the tribe's Luna!"
Kevin laughed again, "Alpha Colin, your Luna is quite something. I thought she was short on cash, so I had the clerk offer her a high price. Of course, it was no match for the actual value of a Rock pack bracelet, but to her, it seemed high."
"Mm, and then?"
"And then…" Kevin scratched his head, "she decided not to sell it!"
A peculiar feeling stirred within me; the anxious expression she had last night reappeared in my mind. Now that we're married, did she still not intend to share her troubles with me? She was clearly troubled, yet she won't speak of it, insisting on shouldering it all by herself.
My eyes narrowed slightly, and I couldn't help but laugh. "Leave all that alone."
I commanded Kevin in a low voice, "Keep that land secure, I don't want it to end up with the Watson family! And put some pressure on that old man, Mike Watson; just make sure they don't have it easy."
"That's your wife's family, isn't it?" Kevin scoffed lightly, "Alpha Colin, what is this all about? I don't understand…"
"It doesn’t matter if you don’t understand, you just need to do what I say, don’t speak needlessly!" I detested the stupidity of Betas.
Sighs came through the phone, "So troublesome, I’m so glad we grew up together, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to deal with your ornery moods. I used to hope the Moon Goddess would grant you a Luna soon to take care of you."
And now, it seems, this woman is right before my eyes. I could sense Kevin’s frown through the phone. "Alpha Colin, if I may speak freely, she's a human woman."
I remained silent. "You're not even Colin, and you won't stay in this little village for long. Sooner or later, you have to return to the Rock pack. What then? Will your family accept her?"
After a long silence, I spoke with gravity, "Future concerns can be dealt with in the future. I am Alpha of the Rock pack, and no one will defy my orders."
"I'm just reminding you not to fall too deep. The tribe won't accept a human as Luna."
"There's no need for you to worry about that; I know my limits." My voice carried a deliberate nonchalance, "I don't even care about this marriage; it's nothing more than a shell to hide my identity."
"Oh, alright then," Kevin sighed. "I hope you can still talk as breezily about it when you return to the Rock pack one day!"
