Chapter 14 A Strange Friendship

Colin's Perspective:

Why would the Watson family come to harass me? I punched the heavy bag furiously a few times before taking off my gloves and tossing them aside, panting heavily with a scowl on my face—what's the deal with this Kevin.

"What did you say to Mike?" I called Kevin.

Kevin replied cautiously, "Alpha Colin, just like you said, pressuring him, right?"

I gripped the phone tightly, my voice as cold as ice: "I told you to put pressure on him, did I tell you to bring up my mother's affair as well? Hmm?"

"Alpha Colin, this... wasn't it just to defend Luna's honor? If not her mother's matter, then what else?"

"Kevin!" Colin bit each word, "Brains are an important thing to have. It is very clear, to me, that you have yet to grow a full one!"

Kevin was confused for a long while, and then the voice of Dennis Stewart came through the phone, he had just arrived from the Rock pack. As childhood playmates who grew up together, Dennis burst into laughter after hearing Kevin recount the whole story.

"Alpha, I would agree with you there; Kevin you really do lack brains! Think about it, you used my mother's situation to pressure Mike, and took his land from him. Isn't it obvious you were standing up for me?”

“And now look, even Hailey Watson thinks you're having an affair with Claire. Do you really think Alpha Colin would be pleased?"

I closed my eyes, annoyed—Kevin really was a foolish Beta. With a slap on his thigh, Kevin seemed to realize the mess he'd made and quickly defended himself.

"I've never thought about competing with Alpha Colin for a woman! Besides, I don't even like human girls; I prefer strong she-wolves! What's wrong with Alpha Colin, fancying such a girl…"

Dennis gave a soft cough, a reminder to Kevin that I hadn't hung up the call. Immediately, Kevin explained to me over the phone.

"I just find it odd, Alpha Colin—you've never been one to like being served by she-wolves, and yet you're so concerned about this human woman."

I didn't care to explain myself to these two foolish wolves. Before hanging up, I heard Dennis chuckling on the other end of the line, speculating, "We'll see about that. Who knows, maybe Alpha Colin won't even want to return to the Rock pack in the end!"

After I hung up, I couldn't calm down. I'm usually composed, but today I couldn't stop replaying Hailey's dirty words, from her phone call in my head. Breathing deeply, I prepared to walk further up the mountain, when suddenly I heard someone calling from behind me.

"Hey, Colin!" A young human man was waving his arms, running up from the path below. I was momentarily startled, I could feel my eyebrows slightly furrowing.

"I thought it was you when I was down the mountain! Didn't expect you to move so fast, I had to do some serious catching up! By the way, have your injuries healed? Do you need me to get you more medicine?"

I nodded, my voice cool: "Thank you, they've healed. You were a great help during that time."

"It's nothing, we're brothers after all!" The man slapped my shoulder, and we headed to the mountain top together.

To be honest, I was grateful to him. This man, Jerry Perry, came from a more prominent family, and belonged to the wealthier few in the village.

He was also the only college graduate in the village, having completed his studies in medical school. The year he returned happened to be when I was injured, from a plane accident.

Jerry, being warm-hearted, was different from others in the village who found me surly and unapproachable. He checked on my injuries every few days, sometimes even bringing special medicine. The unexpected friendship, forged in hard times, was something I wouldn't forget.

"Hey, I just remembered, I haven't asked how married life is treating you!" Jerry laughed heartily, sizing me up with a look.

"You seem to be glowing with health—are things going well with your new bride? I’m actually the one who introduced you two, when are you going to bring your wife out for us to meet?"

I responded with a dark expression, feeling my smile was incredibly forced.

Back when I came to this village to heal my wounds, it was pure chance that I learned all the Henderson family had passed away, and that Colin, whose name was on the identity card, bore an uncanny resemblance to me. That’s how I ended up taking over his identity.

I've been hiding my real name, only wanting to recuperate and ferret out the traitor within my clan. Marriage was never in the plan. Sometimes Jerry’s enthusiasm was just too much to handle.

"By the way, I’ve heard that her temper isn’t the best?" Jerry looked at me with concern. "They do say she's a daughter, who grew up coddled in the palm of a hand, with a bit of a princess attitude. Don’t pick fights with her over silly matters!"

"Mhm, I know," I replied indifferently.

Even if this marriage was unplanned, at least I didn't end up with the Watson family heiress.
If Hailey had been the one I married, I might have ended up biting Jerry to death.

As Jerry and I were speaking, a woman from the village entrance rushed over, "Oh, Colin, there you are? Get home quickly! Your wife needs you, if you don’t hurry, she won’t be able to cope!”

The older women in the village love to gossip the most. "You only have yourself to blame for having such a beautiful wife. One look from the men and they lose their souls. How can you afford to loiter in the mountains? If you don't go back soon, there'll be big trouble!"

My expression changed, and I hurried in the direction of home.
