Chapter 48 Pillows and Blankets Thrown Out Again

Colin's POV

I was also taken aback.

Is my behavior really that obvious...?

Why am I feeling jealous of Kevin for no reason? Ever since we were kids, Kevin has always been following behind me. He's the child of the former Beta of The Rock pack, and I'm the Alpha. Why would I be envious of him?

But I didn't ask Kevin to arrange all this. Why would Kevin take it upon himself to invite Claire to the dance?

Thinking about it, my mood worsened.

I cleared my throat and took a sip of water, just when a pair of soft hands gently wrapped around my arm.

Then that barely-there fragrance from the petite woman started to make its way rebelliously into my nose.

"Colin," Claire’s voice was as sweet as cotton candy, and she smiled in an appeasing manner, "If you don't like hearing about my work, I'll stop talking about it."

I managed a small twitch at the corner of my mouth, feeling a bit more at ease internally.

"It's not that I dislike hearing it." I turned to look at her, speaking slowly, "It's just you've mentioned Kevin's name all evening. Can we talk about something else?"

She widened my eyes in surprise, "Like what?"

"Like..." I paused a moment, "Wasn't the banquet organized by the Morris family? Then you must have heard of the Alpha, right?"

Claire thought for a while, then shook her head lightly.

I felt my expression darkened slightly.

"You don't know about the Alpha?" I couldn't let it go and had to ask again.

"Why bring him up?" She glanced at me, stood up, and went to the balcony to collect the washed clothes, folding them one by one.

"I don't know the person. I've never even met him. And why would someone be named Alpha? It’s such a strange name."

I leaned in, watching her with interest, "But I’ve heard that person is formidable, and the Morris family controls the Rock pack’s economic lifeline. He organized a welcome party, and many socialites attended."

"Since you were at the hotel, weren't you curious about what he looked like? Didn’t you think about going to the party to see?"
I laughed lightly, "Why would I be curious about him?"

"That party, I heard, was to choose his Luna!" Claire couldn't help but laugh, "Alpha, Luna, do the townsfolk really enjoy werewolf culture that much?"

I frowned, continuing seriously, "If you had gone into the banquet hall, and he’d taken a liking to you, couldn’t you have lived the life of the wealthy? What a great opportunity!"

Claire suddenly stopped her work and looked up at me, her brows furrowing.

"Is that what you think of me? A woman who wants to rely on a man's power to live a good life?" Claire was taken aback.

Usually, this little lady spoke softly and always had a smile for me, but this was the first time I’d seen such a serious expression on Claire's face.

"Colin, I've always remembered who I am. I'm married, I have a husband, and I've always been guarding our home faithfully. I am proud of our marriage! I never thought about finding a wealthy man to live a rich life with, regardless if he's an Alpha or a rich heir; those men mean nothing to me! Since marrying you, I resolved to stay with you always. Why would you say such things?"

My throat tightened, and I wished I could take back those words, chew them up and swallow them, but seeing Claire's heartbroken face, I couldn't utter another word.

"You have to let me explain, I just wanted to..." I barely started when I saw Claire grabbing all the pillows and blankets from our bed and throwing them onto the couch!

I grabbed her hand, but the stubborn little woman shook me off and slammed the door shut, followed by the sound of her locking it from the inside.

I sat on the couch, scratching my head furiously, silent for a long moment, eyes settling on the pillows and blankets. They were supposed to be in the bedroom but now were back in their original place.

The pillow and blanket were infused with Claire's scent, which was now insistently invading my nostrils.

I gritted my teeth, tossed and turned, and let out a heavy sigh.
