Chapter 59 The Two Troublemakers Finally Leave
Claire’s POV
In the following days, I realized that when Colin said "keep up the good work," he wasn't joking around.
Due to my leg injury, it was inconvenient for me to move around. He used this as an excuse to carry me every day.
I could have used crutches, but he simply wouldn't allow it. From the moment I got up in the morning, he would carry me, all the way until we went to bed at night, and then...
I couldn't handle how overwhelming it was, so I half-heartedly scolded him, "My leg injury hasn't healed yet, I can't do any vigorous activity!"
But he insisted with confidence, "Your leg needs more exercise to heal faster!"
"You're just taking advantage of my leg injury to bully me!"
“Claire,” he smirked, “since your leg is out of commission, you just lie there and don't move. I'll take care of the rest.”
After some time, my leg finally healed, and I couldn't wait to go to the hospital for a follow-up. Instead, I rushed off to work.
Seeing me, Anne was overjoyed. "You're finally back! Without you sitting next to me these past few days, I've had no motivation to work!"
I smiled, "Not seeing you for a while, your words have gotten even sweeter!"
"Ah, I truly feel guilty! If I had insisted on going with you to that dinner, you wouldn't have been harmed by that bad person..."
My expression changed, and I quickly pulled Anne to a quieter corridor.
"Is this already common knowledge?"
Anne looked around and whispered to me, "Not at all. Nobody in the company knows why you suddenly took medical leave. The director told everyone you accidentally injured your leg. People even wanted to visit you in the hospital, but the director stopped them."
I nodded silently.
The director was not a bad person, just too concerned with self-preservation.
"So even if there are suspicions, no one will speak openly about it," Anne reassured me. "Don't worry, the incident is over. Just stick to the story that you injured your leg by accident!"
"Okay."
I figured the director's approach was probably for the best. As a woman, my reputation matters, and such things are not pleasant to be spread around.
"By the way, I have some great news to tell you!"
I was startled but seeing Anne's uncontrollable excitement, I couldn't help but smile. "What could make you so happy?"
"Jayden and Peter, those two troublemakers, are no longer with the company!"
"What?" I was shocked. "What happened to them?"
"I don't know the specifics, but the day after you were hospitalized, I saw Peter leaving with his things in a box. He looked utterly defeated!"
"And as for Mr. Simmons," Anne lowered her voice, "it seems the board cut his shares and sent him to manage a small department in our Cape May office. Oh... that must be more aggravating for him than being fired! With the small population in Cape May, how will he sell his inventory? It’s torture, isn't it? Haha, serves him right!"
"Hey, are you okay?" Anne looked at me. "You seem distracted!"
I snapped back to reality and gave a weak smile.
Hearing all this from Anne, the more I heard, the more incredulous it seemed.
I suddenly remembered what Colin asked me in the hospital room—I had offhandedly wished that those people would never appear in front of me again.
And Colin's faint "Understood," seemed to still echo in my ears...
I took a deep breath and shook my head. That can't be possible, Colin doesn't have that kind of ability! It must be a coincidence.
"Claire, so you're here!" another colleague rushed over, a look of urgency on her face.
"We've been looking everywhere for you. You two sneaked off for a chat, and you didn't even bring your phone?"
I'm startled. "What's happened?"
"Someone's looking for you!" my colleague gestures downstairs. "In the lobby on the first floor, there's this cute guy who says he's your brother. He's been calling you a bunch, and you didn't answer! He seems really worried. You should check it out!"
My heart leaps into my throat, pounding rapidly.
Eddie's a sensible kid; he wouldn't come to my workplace unless something serious had happened.
And the only reason he’d rush over like this...
"Eddie!" I sprint down the stairs. "What's the matter? Is it Mom's illness? Has it gotten worse?"
