Chapter 30 I love anything given by my husband
Claire’s POV:
Sarah was fuming, her face turning beet red. She always cared about appearances, and now she had lost face completely. Channeling all her anger on me, she raised her hand to hit me but was held back by someone beside her.
Someone pointed to the surveillance camera on the ceiling, advising her to keep the peace for now. Sarah glared at me with hatred, grinding her teeth after a long moment.
"What's so great about marrying a pauper? Forget diamond rings, he can't even afford to buy you a copper or iron ring! You and your poor husband will just stay poor for life!"
After her outburst, she turned and walked away. I watched her retreating figure with frustration and lightly curled my lips. It was clear that I was going to have no peace, at the company, in the future.
I had to start planning for myself and find an escape plan as quickly as I could.
...
The next day when I showed up at the office, things were a bit different. I, the girl who usually went without makeup had put on a light touch, and there was something new on my hand.
A large emerald ring.
My colleagues' eyes widened at the sight of it. The setting of the ring appeared to be pure gold, with intricate engravings on the band, and the translucent emerald stone looked incredibly lavish.
However, the ring's style was somewhat old-fashioned, it looked like a family heirloom. I looked down and gently caressed it.
I had taken it out of the box last night, my fingers were slender and long, so it was a bit too large for me. Colin suggested taking it to a jeweler for resizing before wearing it, but I couldn't wait.
Didn't Sarah say her husband couldn't even afford a ring? Today she would let Sarah see exactly what was on her finger.
"Wow, this is really beautiful!" The female colleagues in the office gathered around, eyeing it with curiosity, "I've never seen a ring design quite like this before, it must be custom-made, right?"
"It looks really old," someone objected, "like some ancient antique."
"It was a gift from your husband, wasn't it? Why such a large one? Did your mother-in-law also wear it? Is it a family heirloom?"
I simply smiled and said nothing. Sarah passed by, glancing at the ring. Her eyes lit up; although the style was outdated, it was clear that it was a fine piece, aged with time.
She was clearly wondering how I could possibly possess such a treasure? Sarah scoffed lightly, a cold laugh escaping her lips, "It couldn't be fake, could it?"
The office suddenly fell quiet, the atmosphere turning awkward as everyone returned to their seats.
"Come on, we did graduate from the same school after all. As someone who was once your senior, I feel obliged to warn you," Sarah looked at her sidelong.
"This ring is old and outdated, the stone on it is clearly tinted glass. An emerald... your husband must have tricked you, using this trinket to please you?"
I touched the ring, meeting her gaze and responded calmly, "I wear the ring to signify that I'm married, nothing more. Whether it's glass or a gemstone makes no difference to me."
"Besides," I smiled frankly at her, "as long as it's from my husband, even if it was made of brass or iron, it represents his sentiment, and I would cherish it all the same!"
"Ha!" Sarah scoffed in derision, "That's a poor person's mindset!"
I didn't take it to heart and continued with my busy work. In the afternoon, as I was planning for the next quarter's sales, I heard Anne murmuring softly to herself.
"Driven mad over orders, bringing just anyone into the company now!"
I was taken aback and turned to look at her. Anne pursed her lips towards Sarah's office, where I saw yet another group of people entering. If I remembered correctly, this was the fifth group of clients she had hosted that afternoon. It seemed she had taken the rivalry over orders to heart.
I smiled lightly, ready to get back to my planning, when I heard Sarah call from her office door.
"You, come here for a moment!"
