Chapter 15 Almost Had a Car Accident
After finishing the meal, Olivia stood up and gave James a quick kiss on the cheek. "James, there's a surgery at the hospital today. I need to check on it, so I'll head out first. Take care at work and don't forget to eat."
"Got it." James's eyes flickered, and he leaned his head back a bit, feeling a tad awkward. He then straightened up and put on his suit jacket. "I'll drive you. I need to get to the office soon too. Emily, you take Michael to school."
Emily glanced up at James and Olivia standing by the door. Olivia had her arm hooked around James's. She was dressed in a beige, professional suit with a brooch on her chest, her hair neatly tied up. Her outfit perfectly complemented James's black suit.
In the sunlight, they turned and smiled politely at Emily before heading out together. Emily looked down at her own cute bunny outfit and couldn't help but feel a wave of inferiority.
They belonged to the same world, while she was just an accidental intruder, a bystander in their world. No wonder James didn't like her. Olivia returned from studying abroad and immediately became an outstanding doctor at a major hospital.
And what about her? She knew nothing and didn't even have a job. Since graduating from college, she had been taking care of James, and later got busy with the Smith Family and Michael, having no career of her own.
The streets were bustling with traffic. Emily got out of the car with Michael. The congestion near the school forced them to navigate the final stretch on foot.
The screeching sound of brakes came, and Emily felt something flash before her eyes. Before she could react, someone pulled her and Michael into an embrace. Terrified, she turned and saw a black car stopped right where she had been standing.
"Michael!" Emily, scared, immediately crouched down and tightly hugged Michael. Luckily, she didn't lose her son. Tears uncontrollably fell as Emily held Michael, not daring to let go for a long time.
"Mommy, I'm here. I'm okay, don't worry." Michael was also frightened, but his teacher had said that boys should protect girls in dangerous situations. So he held back his tears, patted Emily's back, and comforted her like an adult. "It's okay. This uncle saved us. Mommy, you should thank him."
Emily then realized that someone had saved them.
"Emily, are you okay?"
The voice was somewhat familiar. Emily turned and saw a pair of worried eyes, realizing it was John. The joy of surviving made Emily both cry and laugh. "John, what are you doing here?"
"I was just passing by and saw you with Michael. I was about to come over and say hello." John looked at Emily with concern. Her beautiful face was now streaked with tears. He instinctively raised his hand to wipe them away but hesitated and let it fall back to his side.
On the other side, a young woman in her twenties with short hair got out of the black car that had made the emergency stop. Seeing that Emily and Michael were okay, she breathed a sigh of relief. "As long as you're okay. You scared me to death. Luckily, I wasn't driving fast. Ma'am, please be careful next time. Fortunately, your husband reacted quickly, or it could've been a disaster."
The woman exaggeratedly patted her chest, looked Emily and Michael up and down to make sure they were okay, and then handed John a business card. "My name's Evelyn Thomas. Your wife and son were pretty shaken up. If there's any problem, just call the number on the card. I'll cover all the costs. No need to stand on ceremony."
"He's not my husband," Emily, now composed, explained somewhat embarrassedly.
"He's not your husband?" Evelyn looked at the three of them suspiciously.
Not her husband? Evelyn raised her eyebrow. This man looked so worried and affectionate. The concern and love in his eyes were almost overflowing. Probably only the people involved couldn't see it.
But that wasn't her business, so she waved her hand. "Either of you can contact me. If there's any problem, just let me know. I have to go now."
Emily nod.
"Let's go. I'll take you and Michael to school." John picked up Michael with one hand and skillfully took Emily's bag with the other.
Today, John was wearing a light-colored hoodie, effortlessly casual, and when he stood close with Emily, his outfit matching perfectly with what Emily and Michael were wearing.
Evelyn chuckled to herself as she watched them depart. "All dressed in matching outfits and not a family, huh?" She muttered, shaking her head as she climbed back into her car.
At the school gate, John put Michael down and handed him a lollipop, smiling as he patted Michael's head. "Go to school now, or you'll be late."
Michael, delighted by the lollipop, made a face at them and ran off happily.
"John, where did you get the lollipop?" After Michael left, Emily couldn't help but ask, wondering how he had something on hand to cheer Michael up.
John paused, embarrassed, and looked away.
In fact, he had been waiting nearby since early morning, just to catch a glimpse of Emily and Michael. He never expected to witness such a heart-stopping moment. Fortunately, he reacted swiftly; the alternative was unimaginable regret.
But he didn't want to tell Emily that, so he changed the subject. "Emily, now that you're divorced, where are you living? I went to the Johnson Villa to visit Uncle Aiden but didn't see you."
Emily awkwardly tugged at her clothes and finally explained, "I'm living with the Smith Family now."
'Living at the Smith Villa. Are they back together?' he wondered. The bitterness in John's heart made him fall silent.
"But it's just because Michael isn't used to it yet. Once I find a job, I'll leave!" At the thought of the scene in the morning, Emily's eyes deepened. She couldn't continue being idle. At the very least, she needed to have a job of her own.
John's eyes instantly brightened. If he could help Emily find a job, wouldn't she no longer need to stay at the Smith Villa?
After a moment of thought, John quickly spoke, "Emily, you studied nursing, right? I need an assistant nurse. It might be a bit tiring, but would you be willing to help me?"
