Chapter 39 Wishes Won't Come True If You Speak Them Out
Emily tossed and turned all night, her mind bouncing between thoughts of Joseph, James, Ella, and Finn. She finally managed to catch a few winks just as the sun started to rise.
By ten in the morning, a knock on her apartment door jolted her awake.
Yawning, Emily shuffled to the door and found John standing there, looking way too energetic for this hour.
John was rocking a simple white hoodie with some cool embroidery on the cuffs and hem, paired with dark sweatpants. With his bright smile, he looked like a college student.
Emily said with a smile, "Dr. Williams, you sure don't look like a doctor today."
Emily stepped aside to let John in, but he just laughed and said, "It's the weekend. Emily, come to the amusement park with me, will you?"
"What?" Emily blinked at him, totally puzzled.
It was so out of the blue.
John's face turned a bit red, and he looked away, a bit shy. "Since you're pretending to be my girlfriend, we should make it look real. We haven't even gone on a date yet, and my parents are starting to doubt it."
Emily hesitated for a moment but then agreed.
'Mr. and Mrs. Williams have been super kind to me. I should show some appreciation. Plus, yesterday James clearly explained the risks involving Joseph. Even James has to intervene discreetly, yet Mr. and Mrs. Williams and John agreed to help me without hesitation. Such kindness deserves to be repaid,' she thought.
After getting ready, Emily and John drove to the biggest amusement park in Stellaria City, packed with unique attractions.
The weather was perfect, with the sun casting a warm glow over the colorful park. Early autumn was just right—not too hot, not too cold, with a cool breeze making everything feel comfy.
The park was buzzing with people, both adults and kids, all wearing excited smiles.
Emily had been feeling a bit meh, but the lively atmosphere quickly lifted her spirits.
As they walked, they suddenly heard screams ahead, followed by a whooshing sound.
"It's the roller coaster!" John looked at Emily with a playful grin. "Emily, you chickened out when we were kids. How about now?"
Emily had never been a fan of thrilling rides. She was too scared to even think about riding a roller coaster; the pirate ship was her limit.
The roller coaster, with its crazy drops, looked terrifying. The screams of the riders made her feel weak just watching, let alone riding it.
Emily shook her head and quickly took a couple of steps back. "No way, I'm not going."
Repaying kindness was one thing, but risking her life was another.
John was just teasing and patted her head with a smile.
Seeing Emily's expression made his heart soften, just like when they were kids.
When Ava was alive, Emily had been lively and cute. After the Johnson family accident, Emily grew up to be less cheerful.
'Emily, you should always be as happy and joyful as now,' John thought.
They watched a movie in the amusement park, had a not-so-great lunch, and then John took tons of photos of Emily with various big dolls.
"Emily, a little to the left. Yeah, just relax a bit. This angle's perfect!" John directed, snapping photos like they were the only two people in the park.
Emily felt a bit nervous at first, but when she noticed no one around cared and some girls even looked at her with envy, she loosened up.
Following John's instructions, Emily struck various poses. She was wearing a light green strap dress that highlighted her good skin, showing off her slender arms and long neck. Her hair was tied up high, revealing her makeup-free face completely.
Even without makeup, her striking features caught the attention of many passersby.
Standing beside Emily with a gentle smile, John looked like a wealthy student from a prestigious academy, making it clear he was someone special.
"Look at them. They're so sweet. This guy is so handsome and seriously taking photos of his girlfriend. I always cry for true love," a girl excitedly shouted from a distance, holding another girl's arm. "Plus, she's so pretty. Her face without makeup is better than a celebrity's, and she has a great figure. I envy her so much."
Many people secretly admired them, but Emily didn't notice. She was too captivated by the various dolls in the amusement park. They kept taking photos until there were no more dolls she liked. Even though they didn't go on many rides, both of them were really happy.
As the sun set, they sat on a bench in the amusement park like kids, watching people pass by.
John suddenly ran off and came back with two ice creams.
It was Emily's favorite matcha flavor; he still remembered her favorite.
When it got completely dark, the amusement park had a fireworks display. John bought two cans of beer and found a good spot to sit and watch.
Emily usually didn't drink, and the two cans of beer were originally for John. But today, she opened a can and took a sip first. "I'm happy today. I'll drink with you!"
John was a bit stunned, blinking his beautiful eyes before suddenly showing a genuine smile. He took a big gulp of beer.
He moved slightly closer to Emily, looking at her lovingly and secretly.
When the first firework bloomed, John looked at Emily with burning eyes. "Emily, I heard that making a wish under fireworks is very effective. Do you want to try?"
Emily, slightly tipsy, her cheeks flushed. "Of course, I want to try. I'll make a wish now!"
So, when the second firework exploded, they both bowed their heads, clasped their hands together, and made their wishes very seriously.
When John looked up, he found Emily grinning at him, her bright eyes full of curiosity. "John, what did you wish for?"
John patted her head. "If you say your wish out loud, it won't come true."
"Fine, you're so stingy." On a normal day, Emily would never say something like that. But she was very happy today and had a bit of alcohol, so she was more relaxed and didn't dwell on it, focusing on the sky. But she didn't know that John wasn't watching the fireworks but her smile.
'Emily, my wish is for you to always be happy,' John thought.
