Chapter 27 Why Are You So Good to Me
"Get out." David's eyes shot up, filled with malice.
"Boys shouldn't be so fierce. Be more polite next time, okay?" Emily didn't rush over. She bent down, picked up the pieces on the floor with a paper towel, and left without a second thought.
David, ready to blow his top, was left speechless. The other caregivers would always scold him, act like they were doing him a favor, or try to butter him up for something. This was the first time someone just ignore him.
David didn't know what to make of it.
By noon, Emily came back with lunch. She didn't say much, just set the trays down and sat across from him to eat. David, being stubborn, refused to touch his food. Emily didn't care, just ate her meal slowly.
David was baffled. Why wasn't she trying to make him eat?
After she finished, she didn't push him. Instead, she pulled out a book and started reading in the afternoon sunlight.
The room was soon filled with the sound of a growling stomach. David blushed. He hadn't eaten all morning and was starving. But with Emily there, he didn't want to give in, so he turned away in a huff.
Emily just smiled, reached out to touch his hair, and before he could react, she took the lunch box and walked out.
The touch left David stunned. For the first time in a long while, someone got close to him. It didn't seem so bad. But why did she leave again?
Before he could figure it out, Emily came back with the lunch. "You're hungry, right? I heated it up for you. Go ahead and eat."
For some reason, David didn't mind her telling him what to do this time. He lowered his head, grabbed a fork, his long eyelashes casting shadows, and started eating. As he ate, it felt like his loneliness was melting away.
Emily sighed in relief. This bad-tempered David finally stopped being difficult. As long as he was eating, it was a good start.
The whole day went on like this.
Emily didn't talk much at first. As they got more familiar, David would sometimes be picky about food, and Emily would nag a bit. "David, you need to eat to get better. Being picky won't help. You need to eat some veggies too. You're getting sick because you don't eat right. Come on, I'll fork it for you."
David would raise an eyebrow or roll his eyes, but seeing her gentle gaze, he'd eventually eat what she offered.
Then Emily noticed David's hair looked like it hadn't been cared for in a while. After lunch, she brought over some water. "David, lie down."
"What are you doing?" David eyed Emily warily, unsure of her intentions.
Their relationship had softened, and Emily often used David's good moods to get him to do things he normally wouldn't.
"I'm going to wash your hair." Emily tested the water temperature and pulled David over before he could refuse. "If you don't wash it, it's gonna turn into a bird's nest."
"I don't want to." David took a few steps back, his delicate eyebrows furrowing. He wasn't used to people touching him and didn't like being so close to others.
Emily didn't get mad at his resistance. She just pinched his cheek gently. "I'm really good at this. Don't you want to try?"
'Why is she so boundary-less?' David thought, pouting in dissatisfaction. 'But when Emily touches me, it doesn't feel so bad. Her fingers look soft and weak, not threatening at all. Maybe I should give it a try?'
His hesitation gave Emily the chance to pull him onto the bed. Warm water flowed gently from her hands onto David's hair. David's heart trembled.
Although his hair looked thick, it was messy and dry from long-term neglect. Emily carefully combed through the tangled strands, gently washing them with warm water, and softly massaging David's temples, afraid of hurting him.
At first, David shook his head uncomfortably, but gradually, he started to enjoy the feeling of being carefully tended to. His eyes quietly reddened, unnoticed by Emily.
Everyone had been scared away by his bad temper, and he had naturally assumed no one could accept him. Until he met Emily, whose warmth and patience made him feel genuine love again. Although David wouldn't admit it, after spending the day with Emily, he really started to look forward to their time together every day.
After Emily carefully dried his hair, he finally couldn't help but ask, "Tell me, what do you want from me for being so nice?"
His tone was still provocative, but there was a hint of unease in his eyes, like a frightened little animal afraid of being hurt.
Emily was taken aback, looking at David in front of her, feeling a pang of heartache. She squatted down, looking into David's eyes, and softly said, "I want you to eat properly, sleep soundly, and take care of your body."
She didn't know what had happened to make David so resistant to others' closeness. But with her around, she would help David get better gradually.
David was stunned, not expecting Emily to give such an answer. He had thought Emily, like others, had ulterior motives or was just taking care of him out of duty. But Emily's words made him feel a warmth and emotion he had never experienced before.
David lowered his eyes, trying hard not to let the tears fall, but his voice was a bit choked. "Why are you being so nice to me?"
Emily gently stroked David's hair and said softly, "I just want you to be healthy and happy, David."
