Chapter 46 I'm Pregnant
"I don't want to hurt her," Emily said, stumbling from James' shove. She almost fell but managed to catch herself against the wall.
Terrified, Emily touched her lower abdomen. James' angry outburst made her tears flow freely. She cried out, "James, I had no idea Olivia was cutting herself, and I definitely didn't ask anyone to hurt her! Do you really want to treat me like this? Our eight years of close companionship means less to you than a few lies from Olivia?"
James clenched his fists, then released them, refusing to look at Emily. He turned to comfort Olivia instead. "Emily, I gave you a chance, but you kept lying. I can't trust you anymore."
"But I'm pregnant with your child!" Emily finally blurted out. She couldn't handle James' suspicion and accusations anymore. She hadn't done anything wrong, yet she was being treated like this even though he forced her to carry his child.
"Two months ago, that night in the apartment, I got pregnant with your child!" Emily's hands trembled as she took the medical report from her bag and handed it to James, both hopeful and anxious.
Olivia's face turned even paler. She hadn't expected Emily to reveal her pregnancy at this moment, and James had slept with Emily at her apartment.
Clutching the bedsheet tightly, Olivia looked at Emily with eyes full of hatred and jealousy, thinking, 'How dare you, Emily! I will never let you go!'
James looked down, staring intently at the medical report, his lips tightly pressed together.
The room fell silent. Emily's heart pounded like a drum, and every breath from the people in the room seemed heavy.
"Emily." James finally looked up, but his face was still dark, his brows furrowed, and his eyes filled with complexity. "Are you sure this is my child?"
Emily raised her head to meet James' gaze, her voice firm and clear, "Of course it's your child. I've only ever slept with you."
But there was no joy on James' face, only more darkness. That night, the black car parked outside Emily's apartment, and the intimate scenes of her and John at the amusement park kept replaying in James' mind. He looked at the thin piece of paper, feeling nothing but anger. A surge of rage burned in his chest, and the pain of betrayal filled his entire being.
James slowly tore the paper into pieces, saying angrily, "Emily, you really are a habitual liar!"
"I'm not lying!" Emily desperately tried to defend herself, but James grabbed her wrist tightly.
James' eyes were bloodshot with anger, like a wounded beast showing no mercy. "Emily, do you think you can fool me by saying you and John are just pretending to be a couple? Do you really think no one knows he spent the night at your place? Or do you believe I'll accept his child just because you're a woman driven by self-interest? Who do you think I am?"
"It hurts! James! Let go!" Emily's wrist felt like it was about to snap, and she was in so much pain she could hardly breathe. She tried to pry James' hand off, but it was useless.
James was truly furious, his grip tightening, his eyes flashing with madness. The thought of Emily carrying John's child made him even angrier than her lying about not hurting Olivia.
Olivia lay in bed, watching the confrontation with a cold smile, wishing Emily would just die and disappear from her life forever.
A nurse came in to change the medication and noticed the situation, separating the two angry people. "Don't you know you're not allowed to shout in the hospital room? There are other patients here!"
The nurse changed Olivia's medication and gave some instructions before leaving.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Emily escaped James' grip and hid in a corner, gently rubbing her wrist. Her delicate skin was now bruised and purple, looking terrifying against the surrounding skin.
Tears welled up in her eyes, but Emily fought to keep them from falling. "James, whether you believe it or not, I never slept with John. I don't know what you've seen or what you've guessed, but that night, he was just drunk and stayed in my guest room. We have never crossed the line of friendship! You can choose not to believe me, but you can't slander the child in my womb!"
James regained some of his composure, looking at the curled-up Emily and the bruises on her wrist. His heart ached, and he took a few deep breaths.
'Emily, I didn't mean to hurt you, but I can't trust you anymore. Those photos aren't fake, the lights going out isn't fake, and the evidence Olivia presented isn't fake either. Even if I want to believe you, all these coincidences are too much. I am tired. Emily, you're Michael's mother and has taken care of me for eight years. I owe you that much. But now, with you carrying John's child, there is nothing left to say,' James thought.
"Emily, I won't acknowledge this child. As for what you've done, let's not talk about it. Just leave." James turned away, refusing to look at Emily, and sat back down next to Olivia.
For the first time, Olivia openly mocked Emily in front of James, "Emily, you vile woman, hiring people to go after me abroad, being so promiscuous here, and now claiming to be pregnant with James's child. Is this how your mother taught you?"
