Chapter 44 Olivia's Suicide
If Emily's kid really got accepted by the Smith Family, Sophia would definitely put a stop to James and Olivia's wedding plans. And Grace might even bring Emily back just because of the kid.
With Chase in the Smith Family, they couldn't afford any drama. No way they'd let James get engaged to Olivia right now.
So, Olivia couldn't let Emily have this baby! She'd been plotting for eight years; this was not how it was supposed to go down.
Olivia pulled out her phone and made a few calls, thinking, 'Emily, don't blame me, blame yourself for getting in my way!'
The person on the other end gave her a clear answer. Olivia went back to her office, grabbed a disposable surgical blade, and rolled up her sleeve. She glanced at her wrist and then at the clock on the wall before making a cut.
Blood gushed out, soaking her clothes.
Just then, an intern doctor coming in for the shift opened the door and saw blood everywhere, with Olivia unconscious in the chair.
A scream echoed down the hallway.
James was in a meeting when he got the news about Olivia's suicide attempt. He jumped up and rushed to the hospital.
In the emergency room, Olivia's treatment was already done.
Since it happened in the hospital, they treated her quickly, and the blood loss was minimal, so her life wasn't in danger. She just needed an IV drip.
James saw Olivia's pale face and her wrist wrapped in gauze.
Olivia stared blankly out the window, like her soul had left her body. She heard James come in but didn't turn around. It wasn't until he sat by the bed that she spoke softly, "James, did you know Emily is pregnant?"
James was shocked and almost stood up, barely keeping his balance.
Tears welled up in Olivia's eyes, and her voice cracked with emotion. "I got an email today. The school said they found a witness to the robbery and attempted rape incident. One of the accomplices who wasn't caught has now provided evidence. But I love you! Even with a witness, this involves Sophia. I can't go to the police or tell anyone! She doesn't like me and makes things hard for me, and I accept that."
"But Emily! Why does she get to be with you for eight years? And now she has a boyfriend and can get married and have kids!" Olivia shouted, pretending to be super emotional. She deliberately mentioned that Emily already had a boyfriend, hinting that the baby was John's.
After all, James had seen John's car outside Emily's apartment that night, so he must have some doubts.
As expected, the recently enthusiastic James now felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on him. The spark in his heart was promptly snuffed out, remembering that night.
'So what if Emily's pregnant? After our divorce, we only hooked up once. But she and John are probably together all the time, so this kid can't be mine.' The thought of Emily carrying John's child hit James hard. His heart felt like it was being eaten away, making it tough to breathe and causing a ton of discomfort.
James lit a cigarette, sat on a hospital bench, and glanced at Olivia's slightly flushed face from anger, feeling all sorts of conflicted.
Olivia's suicide attempt should've made him feel distressed for her, but his mind was somewhere else entirely.
It wasn't until a nurse came in and quietly reminded him that smoking wasn't allowed in the ward that James put out the cigarette in the trash can.
"Where's the witness?" James asked in a low voice. He couldn't blame Sophia; if things really blew up, Chase would be the first to come down on him.
This was the first thing James said after entering the room.
There was no tenderness or pity in James's eyes, just deep contemplation.
Olivia felt a deep sense of loss, knowing she didn't hold a place in his heart.
Even though he was told that Emily might be carrying John's child, his heart still belonged to Emily.
Not even Olivia's suicide attempt could win James's love.
Olivia lowered her eyes and played a video on her phone.
In the video, a man with sunken eyes and a dark complexion, clearly a long-term drug user, was speaking.
The man shakily recounted how he and a few friends took a job to humiliate a Galaxia female student because they needed money for drugs. He then showed the account where they received the payment. Olivia had already found the account holder; it was Emily.
Emily wouldn't have such a large sum of money, nor the power to hire people abroad and suppress the news. At the time, much of the evidence pointed to Sophia, and it was likely that Sophia and Emily had planned this together.
If James had any hope that Emily wasn't involved in Olivia's humiliation, it was shattered when he saw Emily's bank account. "Emily, how could you do such a thing?"
"Sophia is getting older and may make mistakes, but she's my grandmother, and I can't hold her accountable. As for Emily," James opened his eyes and looked at Olivia's wrist, speaking in a measured tone, "She is Michael's mother, my ex-wife, so she can't have any scandals, or it will affect Michael's future. But after I get engaged to you, I'll give you a portion of the Smith Group's shares as compensation."
Olivia didn't expect that even after pretending to commit suicide and almost dying in front of James, she still couldn't make James severely punish Emily.
Her eyes reddened with anger, and she clenched the blanket tightly.
James moved closer to Olivia, gently holding her hand to comfort her, "Olivia, I'm sorry. Don't do anything foolish again."
Olivia bit her lip but ultimately said nothing more, forcing a smile. "I understand, James. I won't hold a grudge against Emily and Sophia. I was just too upset and lost control for a moment. I'm sorry, James. I was really upset."
Olivia suppressed her hatred and pretended to cry in James's arms.
