Chapter 58 The Child is Gone

Emily had this super long, intense dream.

In it, she was back in her apartment. Sunlight was pouring through the curtains, making everything look warm and cozy. There was this gentle breeze, like something was softly brushing her cheek.

She looked up and saw a little girl standing there.

The girl had pigtails, bright eyes, and an innocent smile. She was sucking her thumb and tilting her head, staring at Emily.

When Emily looked at her, the girl's eyes filled with big, round tears. They hung on her cheeks as she started to sob.

"Mommy, I have to go," the little girl said in a soft, tender voice, her round face full of reluctance.

Emily's heart felt like it was hit by lightning. Pain surged through her as she realized that was her child!

"No! Don't go!" Tears streamed down Emily's face as she reached out, trying to grab the girl. But her hand went right through her.

The little girl smiled a bit, her eyes full of reluctance. She gently waved at Emily. "Mommy, I can't stay here, but I'll wait for you in another world. You have to come find me."

The girl's figure slowly faded away and then disappeared.

Emily cried, unable to speak, chasing after her but never catching up. She collapsed on the ground, heartbroken.

Then, Emily woke up from the dream, tears still on her cheeks. She looked around, dazed, her head pounding. She struggled to sit up and realized she was lying on a cold hospital bed. The white walls and cold instruments felt all too familiar.

A sense of dread filled her. Her hands trembled as she gently touched her abdomen. It hurt, a pain that made her shiver.

Emily could feel that the life inside her was gone.

The child she had eagerly awaited was gone forever.

Tears welled up in Emily's eyes, her heart feeling like it was being ripped apart.

The smile of the little girl in the dream was still vivid, but Emily had lost her forever.

Emily collapsed on the bed, her eyes unfocused, like she had lost her entire world.

Just then, the door opened, and Olivia walked in. She sat opposite the hospital bed, dressed in her work clothes, and tossed the medical chart beside her.

Olivia had a slight sneer on her face, her eyes full of triumph and mockery. "You finally woke up."

Emily looked up, her eyes filled with anger and despair, instantly knowing what had happened.

"Why did you do this, Olivia? I never wronged you! It's okay you slandered me, but why couldn't you even tolerate a child?" Emily's voice was hoarse, filled with endless pain.

Olivia sneered, her face hidden behind a mask, her calm voice laced with cruelty. "Emily, you should know that the child in your belly is unacceptable to the Smith Family. They're the wealthiest family in Mist Isle City. How could they let you be pregnant with someone else's kid right after a divorce and have it all over the internet?"

Olivia suddenly laughed, her voice twisted with pleasure. "It hurts, doesn't it? It should. James is my fiancé. What right do you have to seduce him, you bitch? You deserve it!"

She took a few deep breaths, not waiting for Emily to respond, her eyes gleaming with a mocking smile.

Olivia leaned closer, staring into Emily's eyes with a hint of madness. "Besides, this was all James's idea. He has been tired of you long ago. He just didn't say it out of courtesy and asked me to handle it instead. Emily, I truly pity you. With your pathetic demeanor, what right do you have to compete with me for James?"

Emily stood frozen, her mind blank, struggling to grasp Olivia's words. "You're lying! You're lying!"

Her voice was weak as she looked up, staring at Olivia, trying to find a crack in her facade.

Emily didn't care about Olivia's insults. But hearing that James wanted her to abort the child, she frantically denied it in her heart.

But a voice inside her whispered, 'What if it's true? James always puts the Smith Family first. He doesn't believe the child is his, and neither he nor Grace likes me. Choosing between the family's reputation and sacrificing me isn't hard, is it? Even if we weren't divorced, James might have done the same. After all, I was never his lover. The child in my belly naturally isn't important.'

Just thinking about this made Emily feel like her whole body was being flayed, the pain excruciating. Her lower abdomen ached intensely, making her want to tear apart Olivia's smug face.

Seeing Emily in such a state, Olivia knew she had believed her words. She stood up, looking down at Emily's pained expression with contempt, thinking anyone who competed with her for James would never have a good end.

"Emily, from now on, James doesn't want anything to do with you, and neither do I. You better stay away from us, or I'll make you pay an even more painful price." Olivia glanced at her abdomen with a meaningful look, sneered, and left the room.

With Olivia's lie and Emily losing her child, any chance of reconciliation between James and Emily seemed impossible.

Emily's stiff fingers didn't move for a long time as she sat on the bed, tears silently falling.

The room returned to silence.

The sun was bright, but there was no warmth.

Her child was gone, and her entire world seemed to have completely collapsed.

Emily didn't make a sound, not moving at all, as if swallowed by endless darkness.
