Chapter 32 The Picky Child
Emily found herself in a heated moment with James, something she never expected. Even during their best days before the divorce, James had never been this intense.
This was James' first time being with a woman since the split, and he was having a hard time keeping it together. He lived with Olivia, but they never shared a bed, let alone got intimate.
It wasn't that James didn't want to be with Olivia; he just felt it would mess up their relationship, unlike with Emily. Emily's soft touch always made it tough for him to hold back.
"Just relax, Emily," James whispered, moving slowly.
The next morning, Emily's back was still aching. "Damn James," she muttered.
At the rehab center, Emily clocked in, still rubbing her sore back and muttering curses at James under her breath. He had been at it for two hours until Olivia's call snapped him back to reality. Before leaving, he even applied ointment to the small cuts on her arms and back.
James was exploiting Emily's feelings for him and her dependence on Michael to get his way. The fact that they actually did it made her feel even more guilty towards Olivia, but Olivia had unfairly blamed her for things she hadn't done abroad.
'Fine, I should just steer clear of both of them from now on.' Emily resolved inwardly. Emily grabbed breakfast and headed to deliver it to David.
Whenever she was at the rehab center, David insisted on having all his meals with her.
Emily liked David, so she didn't mind, but the other caregivers were a bit taken aback. Especially Robert Davis, a male caregiver who had tried to get close to David but got bitten and shooed away.
While getting breakfast, Robert was right behind Emily. After she finally got two trays of food, he "accidentally" bumped her arm, hitting the wound from the day before, causing her pain and making the food spill all over the floor.
"Emily, you can't even carry breakfast properly. Why are you even a caregiver? You should just quit," Robert sneered, arms crossed.
Emily rarely raised her voice at the rehab center. Even when things went wrong, she always spoke softly and never argued. Robert, on the other hand, always used his connections with the director to bully the newcomers.
Everyone was disgusted by Robert's behavior, but they all watched from the sidelines, not wanting to get involved.
Emily looked at the spilled porridge and egg sandwiches, her face blank, knowing Robert did it on purpose. 'It's one thing if he wants to bully me, but why waste food?' she thought.
Emily looked up, her face showing a rare cold and angry expression, and said to Robert in a firm voice, "Apologize!"
"Apologize?" Robert laughed like he heard the funniest joke ever, his face full of mockery. "You spilled the food yourself and want me to apologize? Emily, is this how you do things? Watch out, or I'll have the director fire you tomorrow!"
Emily stood her ground, her face set with determination. "Even if I get fired, you owe me an apology. You deliberately bumped into me and wasted food. Even if you were the director, that wouldn't be okay!"
"Emily, don't think you can do whatever you want just because you're close to David!" Robert snapped, his face turning red with anger. As he raised his arm to hit her, he noticed the shocked faces behind him.
The next second, he was kicked to the ground. "Who the hell kicked me?" he screamed.
Seeing David's handsome yet cold face, Robert fell silent.
"I kicked you. Got a problem with that?" David had come out to check on Emily since she was taking so long with breakfast, only to find her being bullied.
Emily was about to get hit, and she still didn't move; luckily, he arrived just in time.
David sighed inwardly, 'She's so stubborn. If I hadn't shown up, she would've been in trouble.'
"Nothing," Robert muttered, quickly getting up and moving away, avoiding David's gaze, feeling bitter inside.
Others might not know, but Robert did; David could be downright scary when he lost his temper. The wound on his shoulder still hurt, and Robert didn't want to provoke him.
"Get lost!" David snapped, giving Robert a disgusted look before pulling Emily away.
Robert looked around awkwardly, seeing the mocking gazes of others, his expression darkening.
On the way back, Emily looked at David curiously. "Why did you come out?"
David turned around, pouting. "If I didn't come out, you'd be bullied. How can you be so dumb, not fighting back when he bullied you?"
"If he dared to hit me, I'd just lie down immediately," Emily joked, pinching David's cheek.
Emily still had the mood to joke, so she really wasn't scared. David glared at Emily, helplessly allowing her actions.
With the food spilled on the ground, Emily had to go out and buy more food for David.
"I don't want porridge. I want milk!" David demanded.
"Got it, picky boy. Drinking milk will make you grow taller."
The day's work ended quickly. Emily said goodbye to David and was about to leave when she received a call from Aiden. Seeing Aiden's name on her phone made her nervous.
But Aiden just asked her to come to the Johnson Villa for a meal. She hesitated for a moment but couldn't refuse. After all, Aiden was her father, so she couldn't completely ignore him.
Deep down, Emily still longed for a basic father-daughter relationship with Aiden, even if she never received as much love as Isabella. Plus, she hadn't seen Ava in a long time. So, Emily agreed and took the bus back to the Johnson Villa. The Johnson Villa was brightly lit.
This time, all the maids no longer had their previous disdain and mockery, all lowering their heads, not daring to look at Emily.
At the dining table, there were many of her favorite dishes.
Emily's relationship with Aiden and Mia wasn't good enough for this. Their sudden change made Emily uncomfortable.
"Emily, you're back," Mia said.
