Chapter 42 He's Engaged

When Emily walked out of the Smith Villa, the sun was ridiculously bright.

She tried to block the sunlight with her hand, but it didn't help much; she just stumbled forward.

Thinking about James and Olivia being all cozy made her heart hurt like crazy, and her vision got all blurry as she wondered what those eight years together and this recent closeness even meant.

Emily cried her eyes out at home until they were all puffy. When it got dark, she finally got up to make herself some dinner: an egg, a cup of milk, and a big piece of medium-rare steak with black pepper.

'It's okay,' Emily thought. 'No matter how bad things get, I gotta live well, eat well, and sleep well. I'm not alone now. Michael's waiting for me, and I've got good friends and elders who care about me. Even if I've lost a lot, I still have a lot, right?'

Emily cut the steak into pieces and shoved them into her mouth, washing it down with a big gulp of milk.

Her stomach didn't feel painfully empty anymore, and the comforting feeling of the food almost made her cry.

It was good that James was getting married. No matter what Olivia was like, as long as he liked her. Emily should've seen this coming and just needed to wish them well.

Soon, news of James and Olivia's engagement was all over the internet.

James was a big deal in Mist Isle City. In just a few years, he had taken over the Smith Family and became the youngest billionaire.

And the story of him and Olivia was legendary, and people loved talking about it.

In contrast, hardly anyone knew about his eight-year marriage with Emily. Because the Smith Family had made sure the media didn't mention it.

The news painted James's love story with Olivia as miraculous and touching.

But none of this mattered to Emily. She kept working at the rehab center, and her life was pretty uneventful.

Sometimes, her colleagues would talk to her about James and Olivia. Like now, a young girl who also worked as a caregiver pointed at the news on her phone and showed it to Emily.

"Emily, check this out! How can there be such a handsome, rich guy who treats his girlfriend so well? If I could date a guy like that for just one day, it would be worth everything, even my life," the young girl exclaimed dramatically, shoving her phone in Emily's face.

Emily had no choice but to look at the screen.

In the photo, James had a serious expression. For once, he wasn't in black but was wearing light-colored couple's outfits with Olivia. Even though he wasn't smiling, it still gave off a warm vibe.

James looked good in anything.

Emily couldn't help but feel a bitter smile inside and looked away, wondering when she'd be able to see those two without feeling heartache.

"Dating a guy like that isn't all it's cracked up to be," Emily's voice was a bit tight.

"He's so handsome, I don't care even if he's bad. I'll go show it to someone else," the young girl said, oblivious to Emily's inner turmoil, and handed the phone to someone else.

Emily had to go help David clean his room, so she turned and left.

David's temper had mellowed out a lot lately, and he and Emily were getting along great. The director was so thrilled that he doubled her salary on the spot.

After all, Emily was the only one who could handle David. No one dared to look down on her anymore, not even the director, who was scared she might leave. It was the only bright spot for Emily in the past two months.

David was lounging in a recliner, wearing a dark red patterned shirt that would look terrible on most people, but he pulled it off like he was royalty.

David, who used to be skinny, had put on some weight under Emily's care, looking healthier and even more handsome. If he went back to school, he'd definitely have a bunch of girls swooning over him.

He tilted his head and stared at Emily for a while.

"You're not happy," David suddenly said. It wasn't a question.

"Who messed with you? I'll get back at them!"

Emily walked over and gave him a playful knock on the head. "Don't jump to conclusions. I've just had a hard time eating lately."

That was true. Besides feeling a bit down after seeing the news about James, Emily had been feeling nauseous during meals, finding it hard to eat, and couldn't stand the smell of meat. Plus, she realized she hadn't had her period this month.

Emily bit her lip, feeling a bit nervous.

Thinking of a certain possibility, Emily was shocked.

She could barely hold the broom in her hand. Forcing a smile, she said, "David, I'm taking a day off tomorrow to go to the hospital. You have to be good, okay?"

No matter what, it was better to get checked at the hospital. Emily wasn't naive.

"Leaving me to eat alone again," David pouted, looking a bit annoyed. He had become very dependent on Emily lately, sometimes not even wanting her to leave on weekends.

But seeing Emily's pale face, David felt sorry for her. If only he could leave this place, he could take Emily to the hospital instead of being stuck here, powerless.

David felt a bit dejected. The annoying person at home wouldn't let him leave, so he was stuck here with a bunch of bodyguards. If it weren't for the need to stay undercover, he wouldn't put up with this. Now wasn't the time to think about that. Once he got rid of those annoying people, Emily could do whatever she wanted.

David blinked. "You should go to the hospital to get checked. If you have any problems, tell me. There's nothing I can't solve, got it?"

Emily, feeling very anxious, nodded absentmindedly.

The next day, at VirtualCare Hospital, Emily sat on a bench with her head down, her eyes red, clutching the crumpled test report.

The doctor's words still echoed in her ears. "You're pregnant. Congratulations, you're going to be a mother."

Emily couldn't believe it and looked at the test report again and again, her hands slowly covering her abdomen.

This child must have been conceived two months ago when she and James had sex.

Thinking of James, Emily felt both panicked and confused.

James hated her so much two months ago.
