Chapter 47 He Doesn't Believe
Mentioning Ava made Emily shudder twice; Olivia had definitely crossed the line. Olivia could insult Emily, but she absolutely couldn't insult Ava!
"Olivia, I used to respect you. You're a doctor, and being considerate, but now, can you really find peace with what you've done?" Emily straightened up, her eyes lingering on the intertwined hands of theirs on the hospital bed, feeling utterly hopeless.
"Emily, it's not your place to lecture me!" Olivia felt a bit guilty inside, but she lashed out angrily.
Olivia had come too far down this path to turn back; the only thing she could do now was to hold on to James tightly.
Emily lowered her eyes, thinking, 'Before coming to the hospital room, I fantasized that James would reassess our relationship because of the baby. I never expected that he would suspect I slept with John that night. No matter the reason, James doesn't trust me. The suspicious looks and questions just now have almost shattered me completely. My baby, don't be sad. Even if he doesn't acknowledge you, Mommy will make sure you get all the love you deserve.'
Emily braced herself against the wall, her voice choked with emotion, "Mr. Smith, rest assured, I never intended for you to take responsibility for this child. Since you don't trust me, I won't stay here to be an eyesore, nor will I appear in front of you again. I will raise the child alone without your help. As for Olivia, I never did such a malicious thing, and I really never intended to harm her, so I can't apologize to her."
James paused, supported Olivia to lie down, and looked somewhat annoyed and frustrated.
Emily was relying on the fact that she was Michael's mother, and he couldn't make her pay the price, so she dared to do anything.
But in some hidden corner of his heart, James felt a pang of jealousy because Emily was having John's child.
James wanted to be angry with Emily, but when he saw her tear-streaked face, he couldn't even bring himself to scold her, only feeling sad.
"If you won't apologize, then leave." James didn't turn around, his voice was calm, but it was clear that he was suppressing his emotions.
Emily didn't say another word and quickly left the hospital room.
James listened to Emily leave, then turned to look at her departing figure.
The blue dress made Emily's waist look particularly slender, not at all like someone who was pregnant, so thin that it made people feel sorry for her.
James's expression was complicated, with a pain in his eyes that he himself hadn't noticed, but Olivia saw it clearly. Her hand, hidden under the blanket, clenched the sheet tightly, her eyes filled with malice.
Emily walked out of the hospital room with heavy steps, the constant pain and weakness in her lower abdomen making it hard for her to stand, forcing her to move forward with difficulty.
The hospital corridor was bustling with people, doctors and nurses hurrying between rooms.
Emily lowered her head and quickly walked towards the elevator, just wanting to leave this suffocating place.
The elevator doors slid open, and Emily stepped in, hitting the button for her floor. She was alone, the silence broken only by her own breathing, her mind replaying the earlier conversation. James's suspicion and distrust cut deep, like a knife to her heart.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm down, but tears still welled up in her eyes.
The elevator doors opened again, and John walked in, his brow furrowed. The news of Olivia's wrist-cutting had spread through the hospital, and everyone was buzzing about how this top-notch doctor could do something so drastic.
John, an orthopedic surgeon, knew how crucial hand dexterity was for surgery. With her wrist cut like that, Olivia wouldn't be able to hold a scalpel for a long time, let alone perform delicate operations. It was career suicide.
John had met Olivia a few times, and she didn't seem like someone with severe depression. It had to be something to do with James.
Sensing someone in front of him, John looked up and saw Emily, her eyes red and looking exhausted.
After Emily left her job, John didn't expect to run into her at the hospital, especially in today's situation.
"Emily, what's wrong?" John's voice was full of concern.
"John?" Emily remembered that John also worked at the hospital.
John's eyes were filled with worry. She looked up, trying to hold back the tears, but it was no use. She wiped her eyes haphazardly, trying to appear cheerful. "It's nothing, John. You don't need to worry."
"If it's nothing, why are you at the hospital?" John didn't buy it and nervously checked her over, only relaxing when he saw she wasn't injured.
But thinking about the news he had just heard about Olivia, John could guess it had to be related to James again.
Emily always liked to put on a brave face, never saying anything when she was wronged. If John hadn't found out, she would have just endured it alone.
"John, I'm really fine. You should get back to work. I'm about to leave." John's concern made Emily feel even more aggrieved, her voice choked as she tried to push John away, afraid that if John kept asking, she would really break down and cry.
"I'm free right now. I'll take you home." John ignored Emily's refusal and gently wrapped his arm around her, leading her out of the elevator and opening an umbrella.
Before Emily could react, John had draped his coat over her shoulders. The rain outside hadn't stopped. It should have been a cold autumn rain, but the warmth from his coat radiated comfort.
Emily lowered her head, tears falling. John didn't ask what had happened, just gently cupped her face and looked into her eyes. "Emily, I told you that if you need any help, I'll be there for you."
Emily didn't refuse anymore. The warmth of the coat seemed to revive a part of her. Crying wouldn't help, and she couldn't keep hurting her body like this. Since she had decided to raise this child alone, she had to work hard to create a better life for the baby.
John escorted Emily to the car, driving steadily down the street, occasionally glancing at her expression.
