I'm pregnant
"You are lying Madame, I know that," Jules murmured.
"It's obvious I'm talking about my baby. Who else is pregnant if not I?" Janice asked him as he was scrutinizing her.
He shrugged but didn't say anything.
"Well," Jeremy began. He walked towards the chair Margie was in and sat on it. He tucked a strand of hair that had slipped out of the ponytail she held it in beneath her ear.
Jules did the same, sitting beside Janice before clutching her hands.
"I saw the doctor at the entrance and I was curious who was sick. But, mother is happy which is confusing." Jeremy grimaced. He recalled going to meet her to ask wha5 the good news was.
But, she had refused to tell him any. Not even Jules whom he thought was her favourite son.
"Oh, gods," Margie mumbled, shaking her head. "Did she say anything to you?"
"She didn't. Was she supposed to tell me anything?" Jeremy inquired, creasing his brows.
"I-I..." Margie stammered.
"She wasn't," Janice said hastily as she noticed her friend was about to tell her husband the truth.
She was aware it wasn't her business to tell, but she believed they might need to be alone for that.
Also, she didn't want Jules to be in the room whilst she was announcing it.
It would be better if it was between them first before he knows.
Yet, she knows if she left the couple alone, Jules would coax her into telling him.
There was no way she could resist him if he decided to use his charm in getting what he wanted.
"It's fine," Margie said. "I don't think I can hide it from him or anyone forever."
"What are you hiding darling?" Jeremy's eyes flickered from Janice to his wife.
He had been doing that since he got into the room. He didn't know what they were talking about. It was as if they had this huge secret they were frightened to let him on.
Maybe, Margie had done something awful? He mulled.
No, it couldn't be. He shook his head. The only awful thing she could do to him was cheating on him. He believed she wouldn't do anything like that to hurt his feelings.
"What is going on?" He asked again as he didn't get an answer from both women.
Janice stared at Margie. "I guess you need to be alone with him?"
"No, it doesn't matter. Sooner or later, everyone will know. So, I don't think you should leave since you already knew."
"Should I be scared?" Jeremy gripped Margie's hand that was pulling a thread out of the hem of the dress she donned.
"You will ruin it if you keep pulling those out." He scolded.
"Here goes nothing." Margie breathed out. She eyed each of the occupants in the room, then her eyes stayed on her husband the longest.
"I don't know how you might take this news. I hope you won't feel overwhelmed or betrayed that..."
"Betrayed?!" Jeremy scowled. He stiffened and his jaw clenched as he stared at her. "Are you cheating on me with another man? So, help me God to see the man that had tried..."
"I'm pregnant, silly!"
"Waoh, that's new!" Jules mumbled.
Janice glanced at him. She had forgotten he was still in the room with her. Her mind had been on the couple a few meters away from her and also on how Margie was going to break the news of her pregnancy.
"You are what?" Jeremy's eyes widened whilst searching Margie's face.
He wondered if he had heard her correctly or if she was playing tricks on him. But, it didn't look like she was joking.
Also, he could tell she was nervous with the way she wrung the gold band on her ring finger. She does that all the time. Especially when she had done something she knew he would not approve of.
"I'm sorry..." Margie muttered.
"Why are you sorry?"
"Because I'm pregnant!" She let out an exasperated sigh. She doubts if he was following what she was saying because he kept asking her the same thing over again.
"I want you to say that again."
"Say that I'm sorry?"
"Not that." Jeremy shook his head.
"That, I'm pregnant?"
He nodded. Then, she repeated it. Slowly, it started making a lot of sense.
Before they arrived at Cherview, he could recall she had been quite ill. He had forced her to see a doctor which she had often refused to, saying she needed none and she was okay.
He believed she had had the flu and hadn't thought of her being pregnant. Hearing her saying it over again warmed his heart.
Although he hadn't thought of having a baby now. They hadn't even discussed any.
However, he was glad that a miniature him or she was on the way.
"You are smiling," Margie mumbled as she noticed the smile that was slowly creeping on his face.
"Of course, I am!" Jeremy exclaimed. "I'm going to be a father!" He carried her into his arms and she broke out into a giggle.
The fear that had gripped her earlier had evaporated. She had thought he was going to reject the baby or feel betrayed that she was pregnant.
She had been on birth control and had stopped when she was sick once, then continued.
His reaction right now was the best one she had ever seen.
"I thought you had betrayed me."
"I wouldn't dare." She mumbled, going to kiss his lips.
"Please, don't make me retch." Jules interrupted.
The duo glared at him, but the happy smile on their faces couldn't be concealed.
"So, I'm going to be an uncle?" He asked. Then without waiting for any answer, he continued. "It makes me feel so old." He grumbled.
Janice glared at him, "I can't wait to be the baby's aunt."
"Back at you." Margie beamed.
The two men glanced at each other, let out a deep breath before staring at their wives.
