Chapter 28

Alison felt that he must have done it on purpose, killing her with his words. He wanted to see her regret and disappointment, as a way to teach and punish her.

But when she thought about it, no matter how you looked at it, she was in the wrong. Alexander didn't fire her and didn't even consider firing her. That was already pretty good.

Alexander saw the girl's expression change from frustration to calmness and even joy. He didn't know what she was thinking but couldn't help but smile again before starting the car. "Shall I take you back to school?"

Alison had already returned to normal by then. "Sure."

Half an hour later, the Bentley Mulsanne stopped at Columbia University's entrance. Alison got ready to get off and chuckled lightly, "Thank you Mr. Rosier."

"Don't mention it!" The man's voice was warm and gentle. "I should be thanking you for not pretending to be my mother after pretending to be my wife!"

Alison forced a laugh twice, "You're welcome!"

It wasn't that she didn't want to pretend; Ares hadn’t agreed.

The man saw that Alison’s ears were turning red so he stopped teasing her further,"Be careful getting out of the car."

"Yes, please drive safely too."

After Alison got out of the car, she walked straight towards the school gate while Alexander watched her slender figure until she entered through the gates before driving away.

That night Ares asked if Alexander said anything angry or took his anger out on Alison after he left while they played games together.

Alison remained calm without saying anything as if intentionally swallowing all grievances inside herself alone.

As expected Ares became uneasy in his heart giving Alison many items during their game session while protecting her throughout from being bombed multiple times himself.

At half past nine o'clock Alison told Ares to go to bed. Unlike usual, he didn't sneer and went straight to sleep after logging out of the game.

Later that night Alison received a call from her father Matthew saying there was a big family gathering at their old mansion this weekend. Her grandparents had issued an invitation for everyone to come.

"What's going on?" Alison asked.

Matthew replied, "Your cousin Kimberly has returned from abroad with two master's degrees. This gathering is not only for welcoming her back but also celebrating her joining the Rosier family as Alexander’s personal secretary."

Alison raised an eyebrow in surprise. Her cousin became Alexander's private secretary?

"I have something else going on this weekend but I'll ask my dad to apologize on my behalf."

She grew up outside of the family and even though she had already returned home, she wasn’t close with any of the Grey family elders. She attended previous family gatherings before but couldn't fit into such lively occasions and always felt out of place.

Especially during these festive reunions, it would be better if she didn't attend.

Matthew tried persuading her,"It's a rare opportunity; your cousin is very outstanding so you can talk more with each other."

"Dad, I really have something else going on." Alison spoke warmly yet firmly in tone.

"Okay then." Matthew could only smile helplessly,"There will still be opportunities for you guys to meet in the future."

After hanging up the phone, Alison played games for a while longer until suddenly a black eagle head appeared slowly turning transparent over time on her phone screen.

Alison exited out of the game and left her bedroom walking towards next door study room where she inputted fingerprint recognition opening its door revealing no bookshelves or desks inside except one computer placed in middle facing two black-and-white screens mounted onto opposite wall.
