Chapter 4
Alexander asked John to investigate the woman who jumped out of the window that day. John went to check the surveillance footage at Ritz Hotel immediately. Strangely, there was a blank period in the surveillance footage between seven and nine o'clock, and even Ritz Hotel's security personnel could not explain what happened. They could only guess there might have been a network outage then.
However, John still found someone in the footage - actress Linda Morgan. The surveillance showed that Linda entered Ritz Hotel yesterday evening at six-fifty. Afterward, there was a blank period in the recording where it couldn't be seen which room she entered. Finally, at nine-five, Linda's agent helped her down from Hofeng Building with one leg bent and an expression of pain on her face; obviously, she had been injured.
Since there were no further records after this point, John couldn't see which car Linda took when leaving Ritz Hotel. It took him some time to find out which hospital Linda was staying in, but he eventually discovered that she had undergone surgery for her left leg overnight yesterday. Unfortunately, John had already read through her medical record due to falling injuries.
That night at New York Medical College Affiliated Hospital VIP706 ward, a woman lying on a hospital bed with both hands clasped together looked somewhat uneasy as she stared across at Alexander sitting on the sofa opposite her. "Mr. Rosier, what is your business here?"
"How did you injure your leg?" Alexander looked at her calmly and spoke lightly.
Linda's one leg was cast while under half-lidded eyes flickered restlessly as she whispered: "Is it related to Mr. Rosier?"
"You don't need to hide anything from me," said Alexander indifferently." I've checked the surveillance video myself. Your agent helped you leave by car around nine o'clock last night. Your leg was already broken at that time. You were the one who jumped out of my room that night, weren't you?"
Regarding guest privacy, Ritz Hotel does not have cameras facing the windows of each room, so they could not see where Linda had jumped from, but her whereabouts matched what happened that night.
Linda looked up with a hint of confusion as her thoughts began to race.
The agent standing beside her couldn't get a word in edgewise and dared not breathe too loudly.
"You don't need to be afraid," Alexander said calmly." I promised you before that I would compensate you for helping me."
John placed a card on the table with an icy expression: "There are ten million dollars in this card. Don't mention anything about what happened that night again."
Linda bit her lip and hesitated momentarily before saying: "I don't want money. I did it voluntarily at the time. So please rest assured, Mr.Rosier, I won't tell anyone."
"I keep my promises," Alexander replied." Don't you want money? You can make other requests if you like."
Seeing the agent signaling to her with his eyes while clenching his hand tightly, Linda pondered carefully: "I don't want anything else except...if Mr.Rosier thinks highly of me, then please treat me as your friend..."
Alexander interrupted her coldly: "I think it would be better if you made more practical demands!"
Linda's face suddenly turned pale by several degrees; she looked embarrassed and awkward before finally saying: "I do not wish to stay in my current company anymore. Can Mr. Rosier help me?"
Alexander paused momentarily before replying: "Would you like to come under Warner Entertainment which is under The Rosier Family?"
Linda's gaze softened as she nodded gently: "Thank you, Mr. Rosier!"
Alexander stood up and said: "I will have Robert Clerk from Warner Entertainment contact you about signing the contract. As for your breach of contract with your current company, he will help you resolve it."
Linda thanked him again in a soft voice while looking delicate and charming due to her pale complexion caused by her injury.
As Alexander left, he suddenly turned back and asked: "Why did you come to my room last night?"
Linda was taken aback for a moment before quickly saying: "I was supposed to go next door for an audition, but I went into the wrong room."
...
Alexander left for a while, and Linda hadn't returned to her senses yet. Then, of course, she remembered what happened last night. She tried out for a new play, and the director Mr. Davis asked her to have a detailed discussion at Ritz Hotel. When she entered the room, she heard the waiter say that the next room was Alexander's exclusive suite, so she took an extra look.
She waited in the room for almost an hour before Mr. Davis returned drunk and wanted to harass her sexually. She struggled for half a day and finally hid under the window before closing her eyes and jumping down.
Her agent also realized now: "Mr. Rosier mistook someone else? Will we be in trouble if we deceive him?"
Linda turned pale and clenched her blanket: "What else can we do?"
Signing with Warner Entertainment was too tempting; establishing a relationship with Alexander was even more exciting! The Rosier family controlled New York's economic lifeline and that of C country, from top government officials to businesses - they were all subject to their authority. So nothing would be left to worry about if she could win Alexander's favor!
With heaven arranging things this way and helping her, why should she push it away?
Linda fantasized about trampling all those who looked down on her before and those above her, trying to curry favor with her in the future. If this dream can come true, why not gamble once? She wasn't afraid that Mr. Davis would expose her either since he got scared when he saw Linda jump off that night; now, he wants nothing more than not to have any connection with him.
After leaving the hospital, Alexander sat silently inside his car, feeling somewhat restless and disappointed despite finding out that only some tiny actress had humiliated him with a hundred dollars. Perhaps it was due to this sudden restlessness that he found the matter uninteresting and didn't want to pursue it further; he just wanted to end things quickly.
...
On Saturday, after finishing her last class in the morning, Alison took a car to the Grey family's residence located on Upper East Side.
It was already 11 o'clock when she arrived at their doorstep; the sky was overcast, and rain seemed imminent. The maid Lucy opened the door and, upon seeing Alison, tugged at her lips: "Alison, you're back!"
Alison nodded slightly before changing into slippers and walking inside.
Lucy's attitude wasn't cold nor warm: "The master has taken his wife out; they won't be back for a while. So you can sit by yourself first."
"Has my sister come?" A surprised voice came from upstairs, followed by a teenage girl who ran down the stairs with an attractive smile on her face - Lily Grey had arrived in front of Alison within moments. "Sister, why did you only come now? I've been waiting for you all morning."
Alison smiles and calls out her sister's name. "Lily Grey.".
Lucy plastered on a smile towards Lily: "Miss, desserts are ready in the kitchen. Would you like blueberry mousse or chocolate?"
"I'll decide later; go do your work now so I can talk with my sister," Lily said sweetly.
"Aye!" Lucy respectfully replied before glancing at Alison again and then heading towards the kitchen.
Lily showed off her newly done hair which she held up using sharp scissors while standing sideways in front of Alison: "Mom dragged me along early this morning to get our hair done together but insisted that I change my hairstyle too! So, sister, do you think it looks good?"
Alison nodded, saying it looked great as Lily touched one strand of hair under her ear: "I've been looking in the mirror for half a day, and I still feel like it's not done well. I tried cutting it myself but wasn't satisfied; can you help me cut it, sister?"
Alison took Lily's scissors and asked: "Where do you want me to cut?"
"Right here at my earlobe - just trim a little bit." Lily turned sideways while tilting slightly as she pointed toward one strand of hair below her ear.
As Alison was about to start cutting, they heard a terrified voice outside the door: "Alison, what are you doing?!"
