Chapter 32 - Losing Control

"Kai!... Kai! Stop that's enough!" Arrow tried hauling Kai off the Sirran soldier who laid dead and bloodied on the floor as Kai continued to land fist after fist on his broken body. Kai's eyes were blood red as he fully invoked Pax in to his body. His canines had descended and were dripping with saliva like some kind of frenzied beast.

With a small flick of his arm, Kai sent Arrow flying backwards as he tried to pull him away. "I'LL TELL YOU WHEN IT'S ENOUGH!" The room suddenly flooded with dominant waves and Arrow and Trace instantly dropped to their knees being unable to stand in the thick fog of energy that surrounded them. Trace's eyes turned white with fear as he struggled to speak in his presence.

Arrow tried desperately to stand to help his friend. Kai was not acting like himself, but Arrow's wolf, who was in complete subjugation to Kai, refused to let him up or move from that spot. "Kai! You have to stop, this isn't you!" As Arrow tried one more time to get up, the door to the interrogation room suddenly flew open and Elias came rushing in after sensing Kai's energy from outside.

After quickly assessing the scene, Elias grabbed Kai by the throat and pushed him back with such force that it caused the wall behind him to crack. The rush of the attack caught Kai by surprise causing the dominant waves that he was emitting to falter slightly. This instantly took the pressure of Arrow and Trace who were still pinned to the floor by the weight of it. Without looking back, Elias pointed to the door with his free hand to signal to Arrow and Trace to leave the room, which they quickly did, closing the door behind them.

"LET GO OF ME EL!" Kai roared in his face. Elias hadn't seen Kai lose control like this before. Something must have triggered him.

"You need to calm down!" Elias's eyes turned black as he tried to reinforce his grip on his little brother. "You're gonna have the whole fucking pack down here with the energy you're chucking out, so stop this right now!"

Kai struggled against him and clawed at the hand at his throat. He started pushing back against the wall, causing Elias to slide back a little. His little brother was strong. Elias readjusted his footing to force him back to where he originally was. If he didn't calm him down, things would get ugly real fast.

Elias turned Kai's face to meet his with his other hand as he tried appeal to his common sense. "DON'T...DO THIS KAI! Don't make me have to fight you!" Elias knew that Kai could probably overpower him in his current state and that he'd most likely have to shift in to his wolf to restrain him, but in such a small room it would get messy real quick. Kai looked down at the hand on his throat which only enraged him further. Elias forced Kai to look back up at him in the face.

"Focus on me you little dip-shit, if I have to ruin my new suit to fuck you up, I won't be happy!" Elias implored. He hated having to get his hands dirty, but if Kai needed disciplining, he wouldn't be afraid to administer it.

Kai started to become a bit disorientated as he tried to fight his own instincts to attack his older brother. "That's it... calm down." Elias encouraged him after seeing his expression starting to change.

Kai's eyes slowly turned from red to black then blue as he started to come to his senses. The clawed grip that he had on Elias' hand started to retract and relax.

Seeing his eyes change colour Elias released his hold and Kai slumped to the floor breathing heavily. They stared at each other for several moments as the adrenaline in their systems started to come down.

"What the hell was that about?!" Elias demanded. He was breathing a little harder than normal too.

Kai just sat there confused. He wasn't sure what had come over him. He hadn't lost control of his wolf but he felt compelled to let out his anger.

The Sirran solider they had been interrogating had been loyal to his territory till the end. Being unable to get much out of him, other than the fact that they were looking for someone, Kai had just lost his temper in his frustration and beaten him to death.

"You're lucky this room is underground. If Matias had felt that and come down here you would have been in a whole world of pain."

Emitting excessive dominant energy like that in front of your superiors would be seen as no less than a challenge to someone's authority. If he did that in the presence of Matias, as his superior he would be entitled to put him down.

"Come with me. I think we need to have a little talk don't we? And I can’t stand the putrid smell in this room." Elias stalked out of the room to find Arrow waiting outside anxiously. Trace had already left, not keen on witnessing two alphas duke it out.

"Get him up Arrow and bring him to my study," Elias spoke from the corner of his mouth before walking ahead. Arrow nodded silently before walking back in to the room. He walked over to Kai then knelt down in front of him. His energy had stabilized and the difference was like night and day. "Hey" Arrow spoke guardedly.

Kai continued to stare at the floor. "I'm sorry..." He was already feeling guilty for hurting his friend who had tried to help him.

Arrow was taken aback by his words. Kai very rarely showed remorse like this and Arrow disregarded it. He wasn't looking for an apology from him, he was just relieved that he was okay. Kai wasn't the type to flout his dominant waves so he knew something had to be wrong.

"Let me help you up." Arrow hooked an arm under Kai's arm and then pulled him up. "Can you walk?"

"Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks" Kai responded.

"Want me to come with you?"

"Nah, you're good. I'll catch up with you later," Kai replied and started walking ahead to Elias' study. As he reached the room, the door was already open and Elias was leaning against his desk, waiting impatiently.

"Sit!" Elias barked at him, almost like he was talking to a disobedient puppy. He motioned with his eyes to an empty chair and Kai sat down in it.

"What happened down there? It’s not like you to lose control like that," Elias asked.

Kai didn't really want to talk. He was struggling to comprehend why he had gone over the top in the first place.

"Seriously? Spit it out! You have more control over yourself then most of us...." Elias paused for a moment to think. "...except when it comes to your mate... Is that what this is about? Is this to do with Adalyn?"

Kai jerked up listening to Elias mentioning her name. He had never told him her name when they last spoke, but then Elias had told Melody about her, so he obviously knew a lot more than he originally thought. He still wasn't keen to say anything more than necessary though.

"Oh come on!" Elias continued "You must know by now that not too much escapes me, when it comes to my family. Have you claimed her?"

Kai's silence answered his question for him

"Have you at least slept with her?

Kai turned his gaze away from him on to the floor.

"Fuck me, Kai. And you're wondering why you're acting out like this? If you don't at least sleep with her, you're going to get worse. No fated mates hold out as long as you have. Your wolf will continue to get frustrated and end up taking it out on everyone else. Just fuck her and get it over and done with!"

"I can't!"

"Why not? Don't tell me you have forgotten how?!" Elias chided

Kai snapped. He'd had enough of being spoken to like he was a child. He forcefully pushed himself up and out of his chair and stood face to face with Elias. "Because if I fuck her, I could accidentally end up claiming her, and you know why I can't do that! I know you know everything that goes on around here, yet you conveniently choose to ignore the fact that somebody around here wants both me and her dead!"

Elias narrowed his eyes and gave a short smile. He almost looked proud seeing his brother standing up to him and starting to piece things together on his own. "So my little brother has balls after all." Elias pushed off his desk and started walking around it. He sighed. "You're right. I do know about that. But what's going on is bigger than just you and her."

Kai stared puzzled. So he did know everything after all, and had done and said nothing. "What do you mean?" Kai challenged.

"This is the one thing that I can't help you with little brother. You're gonna have to figure this out on your own and protect her yourself. I have no doubt in my mind that you can do that."

"Wait, you know who's behind this?" Kai rushed at him and grabbed him by the collar. "Then you have to tell me who it is?!"

Elias looked at the pained expression in his brother's face. "I'm sorry Kai, but I can't!"

"El!" Kai's eyes flashed black as he pulled at his top threateningly. Elias did nothing to stop him seeing how hurt he looked at his refusal to help him.

"I'm not going to fight you on this. You can do what you want to me but I can't say anymore" Elias concluded.

Kai searched his eyes for answers and gritted his teeth when he got none. What could be so big that Elias would willingly risk his own brother’s life for it. Seeing the determined look in his eyes, Kai shoved him backwards and released his collar from his hands.

"Listen Kai, all I will say is this, you need to keep your head together. I understand your reasons for not claiming her right now, but the more time you spend with her, the harder it’s going to be for your wolf to accept that you're no closer to officially affirming your bond. Claiming her is just one part, physically mating her is another. If you're biding for time, you're going to have to concede on one of those two to keep your head in the game. Your wolf isn't like mine or Matias. Your wolf has the capacity to exceed ours both in power and ability, but as a result there is only so much that your wolf will put up with before you start losing it. You're gonna have to make a choice with her, and make it fast."
